29 May 2013 (Ray)
Mostly local trade tonight.
Fyne - Sublime Stout | 6.80 | | Good roasty and hoppy stout would have been improved by serving through a tight sparkler. |
six°north - Prototype | 4.20 | | First cask beer I've seen from this brewery. Belgian style pale ale. Hoppy and bitter but more focus needed. |
Fyne - Superior IPA | 7.10 | | Disappointing English style IPA. What was missing from the hops was made up for by the dominating caramel. Maybe 2* really. |
19 May 2013 (McGargle)
Hoped to try Cromarty Atlantic Drift and Mor-Ish but both had sold out within 2 days so sat on the harbour wall in the sunshine with a Fyne ale.
Fyne - Aonoch Mor | 4.00 | | Pleased to find that after the departure of former head brewer, Wil Woods, Fyne are still more than capable of devloping top class ales. This one was golden, solid malts, initially slightly sweet and citrus then a good bitter finish. |
11 May 2013 (Ray)
Packed. Good atmosphere.
Cairngorm - Trade Winds | 4.30 | | Regaining some lost form. Fresh and fruity. Still a bit thin and could do with more biting flavour. |
25 Mar 2013 (Ray)
Wanted to try the saison from 6degnorth but two kegs had sold since Friday.
Swannay (formerly Highland) - The Duke IPA | 5.20 | | Could do with more body. |
Speyside Craft - Bottlenose Bitter | 4.10 | | Classic case of the whole being less than the sum of the parts. Slightly sweet and limited hopping. no real balance. |
12 Mar 2013 (Ray)
Local trade on a bleak night.
six°north - Hop Classic (keg) | 6.60 | | Wanted to try this again. Thoroughly enjoyable and that initial sweetness had vanished. Great condition with small, lively bubbles. |
10 Mar 2013 (Ray)
Called in to sample a trail beer from six°north brwery which has the same ownership as The Marine.
six°north - Hop Classic (keg) | 6.60 | | Good take on a new style Belgian Bitter. Golden and slightly hazy, great bitterness contained by the malts, some intial sweetness and a drying finish. Post-trial likely to be branded as 66 Bitter. |
Strathaven - Avondale Amber Ale | 4.00 | Not Tried
Born in the Borders (formerly Scottish Borders) - Dark Horse | 4.50 | Not Tried
27 Jan 2013 (Ray)
Busy. Fast, friendly service.
Strathbraan - Head East | 4.20 | | Really enjoyed this very well crafted best bitter. Glowed with burnished copper and, even without a sparkler, produced a long lasting creamy head. Some floral hops balanced with a well chosen malt bill left this drinker wanting a second. |
Burnside - Black Katz | 3.60 | Not Tried
08 Jan 2013 (McGargle)
Same beers as last visit.
Stewart - Pentland IPA | 4.10 | | Merely competent dark golden best bitter. |
06 Jan 2013 (McGargle)
Pleasant, early evening visit. Warm fire.
Swannay (formerly Highland) - Sneaky Wee Orkney Stout | 4.20 | | Good roasty flavours, bitter but perhaps could do with more body and the use of a tight sparkler. |
Belhaven - Caledonian Deuchars IPA | 3.80 | Not Tried
Timothy Taylor - Landlord | 4.30 | Not Tried
Stewart - Pentland IPA | 4.10 | Not Tried
Inveralmond - Dunottar | 4.20 | Not Tried
Williams Brothers - Fraoch Heather Ale | 4.10 | Not Tried
14 Dec 2012 (Cav)
Nice cozy atmosphere with good service
Fyne - Jarl | 3.80 | | Slight Haze but nice citrus hopping with good balance |
Timothy Taylor - Landlord | 4.30 | Not Tried
Houston - Peter's Well | 4.20 | Not Tried
