I swear this place has a new manager. It's almost civilised. There was even a staff member saying "Anyone waiting?" and not finding a taker. Started a quiz night on a Wednesday. Older clientele in along with youngsters after cheap booze.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Elgood's - Black Dog Mild3.60ExcellentOutside of Moorhouses Black Cat and Cains Mild, probably my favourite mild. And this was good, plenty of malts with that slightly acidic side to it. Choccy, but more coffee. Just a beer you can knock back and savour.
Jennings (since closure now brewed at Marston's) - Sneck Lifter5.10GoodRequisite chocciness with decent malts and makes it a tasty drinkable premium bitter.
23 Apr 2007 (Ian)
First day of the Wetherspoon festival and I didn't think that the Ashford branch would have much, but how wrong I was. 5 new beers for me and plenty of point of sale stuff up for the festival. I was even offered the 3 nips.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Wadworth - St. George & the Dragon4.50GoodAlso badged as Mann's St George and the Dragon. Copper colour with lasting beige head. Caramel malt. Roasted nuts. The dry roasted peanut thing is bizarre. I can't quite believe it's supposed to be like this. It's ridiculous. The lfavour of malt and peanut makes it unbelievabley drinkable. Definitely will try the other half pint. I had the other half and yes it did taste of dry roasted peanuts.
Everards (see entries against Joule's & Robinsons whilst its new brewery was being built) - Sly Fox4.00GoodGold with thin beige head. Certainly has ginger and I like ginger flavoured beers and I like this. Fairly simple blond beer with some stem ginger.
Brakspear (at Marston's Wychwood) - Organic4.00AcceptableLight, pale bitter. It's got some nice floral hop on finish. Fine, some rose petal, some good syrupy citrus fruits and tangerine.
Nelson - Land of Hops & Glory3.90AcceptableBrewed especially for JDW according to the pump clip. Hazy amber colour with thin beige head. Some caramel on aroma, tangy hops on finish. Hops are fun on a standard bitter.
Thwaites - Double Century4.80AcceptableCopper colour with thin white head. Slightly soapy/syrupy premium bitter. I fear I've ruined my taste buds as all the beer tonight tasted nice. Syrupy alcohol is tangeriney. Decent hop finish. Fine.
19 Apr 2007 (Ian)
It was curry night and I just stopped in for a fast pint or two.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Badger (Hall & Woodhouse) - Tanglefoot (was 4.9%)4.70GoodNever a big fan of this before. Clear amber colour with lasting beige head. Some of that Badger yeasty distinctive aroma, hops on end are almost coppery citrus. Decent zesty tingle and extremely drinkable. I'm impressed, would have drunk it all night.
Nelson - Friggin in the Riggin4.70AcceptableI agree with Steve, having a thick creamy head on a Kent beer is silly. Simple drinkable bitter. Not as good as the Tanglefoot so only a 3/5

Popped in for a swifty after work
BeerABVScoreNotes
Nelson - Friggin in the Riggin4.70Excellentone small thing spoilt this pint was it being served with a very tight sparkler took ages to get the pint poured the bar staff struggled with it I mentioned about taking the sparkler off but he said it's company policy to keep it on OK for Northern beers but a beer brewed in Kent!! still the beer was in excellent condition made easier to drink by the way it was served

Sat out the back on the patio enjoying the sunshine.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Hanlons (formerly O'Hanlon's) - Original Port Stout4.80ExcellentOne of my favourite stouts. Fruity as well as the traditional dark roasted malts.

I had been to the dentist so felt I deserved a pint.

Exmoor - Beast6.60ExcellentI love this beer. Deep, huge and full of alcohol. Great.

I had had a particularly good day at work, so I thought that I would break my self imposed weekday sobriety and check this pub out for any interesting guest beers. And what a great one I got Exmoor Beast which I have been looking for since the Wetherspoons festival last October. Reasonably busy on steak night, but as always, not enough staff on to cope with the volume of customers.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Exmoor - Beast6.60ExcellentVery deep ruby colour with lasting tight beige head. Aroma of dark fruits, damson and dark plum, but not sour. Some choc. Smooth juicy fruity in mouth. More dark fruit juice. Fruit skin aroma is very good. Noticeable dose of hop on finish. Some more smooth choc on finish. Little bit of grainyness. A rather stunning pint. Alcohol hardly makes a presence until you try to stand up and your legs have gone. Excellent

I'd not had a particularly good day at work so I thought that I deserved a pint. Which is what I had. Very young clientele in at around 22.00, but I found a seat and still managed to enjoy a pint whilst people watching.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Wickwar - Old Arnold4.60AcceptableVery malty beer, bit of sweetness and then some hop on the finish.

I had a smallish hangover from drinking too many bottled beers at home the night before. I therefore thought that the hair of the dog might work. And what a surprise and relief to find a beer as good as Bath Barnstormer on. Two pints and I was back in the wagon. Then went home and fell asleep in front of Scotland vs Italy in the Six Nations. Oh well.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Bath Ales - Barnstormer4.50ExcellentThis has got a lovely wide mouthfeel to it. Very good malts and some toasty, coffee, choc flavours and some fruit. A little creamy in the mouth, but a good beer from a really good brewery.
16 Feb 2007 (Ian)
Lateish Friday evening and it was bizarre mix of young people drinking strangely coloured drinks and 4 members of the local constabulary checking their IDs for under aged drinkers. I don't think I need to say anything else. Except it wasn't too busy.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Hydes - Jumpin' Jack4.70GoodReddish copper colour with lasting bubbly beige head. Some yeast and red fruit malt aroma. Some red apple too. Good fullness in mouth. More fruit salad flavour in mouth. Some earthy hop finish. Some juicy fruit too. Good juicy bitter. And the first rating I've made on my mobile phone.
