Burns' Night!!!! I love Burns' Night at a Wetherspoon's with the haggis, neeps and tatties and Scottish beer or whisky at a reduced rate. It is late January, so not many people around in the pub, but still enough to put pressure on the kitchen to get the chieftain of the pudding race out onto the tables.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Belhaven - Caledonian Deuchars IPA3.80ExcellentThe barrel went off as I ordered it. Fortunately they had another one ready to go. The barmen took my food order and said that if I liked to sit down, he would bring the beer over when it was ready. How civilised. Lovely hop aroma. Slight sweaty, but the best pint I've had of this that I've had in ages. Fresh, citrus, soft in mouth. Superb minerality. Clear and superb. Tangy hop finish.
Highgate - Fox's Nob4.40AcceptableAmber, thin off white head. Nettle/herb/earthy hop aroma, some yeast. Some fruity malt in mouth, battles the slightly eggy yeast. A little hard juiciness before developing into a lemon wine gummy juicy finish with an ultimately dry tingly hop finish. Not as good as the Deuchars.

The Hopdaemon Incubus here is actually very good. Not overly busy later Tuesday evening.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Hopdaemon - Incubus4.00GoodThe malts are a bit rich for me, but I do like the hop aroma and it has a good bitter finish.

Sparsely populated with an assortment of Ashfordians. I just wish they'd be a bit more adventurous with their beer list.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Hopdaemon - Incubus4.00GoodGreat smell of lychee but a rich baby-food finish.

Still on a high after leaving the Dering at 15.00, so I came in here to see if there was anything interesting. At least there was one guest beer on. Not overly busy on a mid Saturday January wet afternoon.

Here with Andrew on Christmas Eve. Fairly empty apart from the bouncers and police clearing up a disturbance at the back of the pub. I suggest sitting near the front in the non smoking area.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Marston's - Old Empire IPA5.70GoodSome ok fruit, some hoppy dryness on end. Quite pleasant to drink
Greene King - Abbot5.00AcceptableWhich I had to have as the Spitfire was off. This was fine. Unexceptional, but I drank it without noticing anything horrible about it. Some interesting malt.
Shepherd Neame - Spitfire (or Spitfire Amber Ale)4.20UndrinkableI had to return it as it was as cloudy as anything. To be fair, they did take it off sale and change the barrel.

Surprisingly empty given that it was Christmas eve. Then agains the range of beers on offer weren't exactly the kind to entice you away from the tele.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Marston's - Old Empire IPA5.70GoodPale malt gold colour. No head. Smells of summer medows. Tastes of snow and gold malt. Quite sharp and slightly sour.
Eagle (formerly Wells & Young's, formerly Charles Wells, formerly Wells) - Courage Best Bitter (use Marston's entry now please)4.00AcceptableSickly bite to the bitterness. Soft mouth feel but another average pint.
Eagle (formerly Wells & Young's, formerly Charles Wells, formerly Wells) - Courage Directors (use Banks's entry now please)4.80AcceptableSmells of diluted sick. Tasts of soapy sick. Gee what a Christmas eve I'm having.
Shepherd Neame - Bishops Finger5.00AcceptableDark brown beer. Big burnt sugar taste with a hint of coffee. Base bitter resin bite to finish. Not a great beer.

I am sure that this pub has had a new manager since they revamped it (new chiller system in cellar). The cask condition beer quality has definitely improved as well. The non smoking area has been extended and there were even candles on the tables last night. Good improvements.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Cotleigh - Red Nose Reinbeer4.50GoodLovely choc malt and a slightly sour edge to the red and dark fruits. Full in mouth and a great winter beer.
Burton Bridge - Santi-Freeze4.50GoodI liked the slightly spicey orange citrus hop on this, especially on the finish. This sat atop a slightly creamy/caramelly malt body. Overall extremely drinkable

Sunday late lunchtime and I had to have the new Shepherd Neame beer as soon as I saw it there when I had breakfast earlier in the day.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Cotleigh - Red Nose Reinbeer4.50ExcellentRuby colour, lasting bubbly beige head. Lovely warming winter beer, lots of choccy malt and rich dark fruits. Choc and blackberry aroma, full of juicy blackberries in mouth. Nout huge hops, but some dryness on end.
Shepherd Neame - Christmas Cracker Ale3.90GoodAmber colour with thin off white head. Sheps yeast and slightly spicey hop aroma. Some juicy malt in mouth with touch of caramel/toffee and then earthy spicey hop finish. Bit of spicey citrus. A bit like a spicier MasterBrew. Finish of spice/tingle is quite lasting.

I came here, just for one about 22.00. Not overly full.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Hopdaemon - Incubus4.00ExcellentI think that this was the best pint of Incubus that I have had in this pub. Crystal clear amber/orange colour with lasting beige head. Malt fruits and hop were integrated and the conditioning was just right, giving a full mouth feel and good carbonation.

I had wanted to get a pint of Adnam's Bitter in The Phoenix, but it had been replaced by Greene King IPA, so I walked back out and went to the County instead. Fairly empty on a Monday early evening and I sat by the front window watching the world go by with a pint.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Marston's - Old Empire IPA5.70AcceptableCrystal clear copper colour with lasting partly creamy/bubbly beige head. Earthy hop aroma. Some hop, bit of ashtray. Bit farty on aroma too. Raspberry malty fruit in mouth, some hop bite on end. Sweet red fruit in mouth. Drying finish, hops battling with the sweetness. Juicy malt. Too sweet for me, not enough hop to balance, but interesting.
