I came here, just for one about 22.00. Not overly full.
Hopdaemon - Incubus | 4.00 | | I think that this was the best pint of Incubus that I have had in this pub. Crystal clear amber/orange colour with lasting beige head. Malt fruits and hop were integrated and the conditioning was just right, giving a full mouth feel and good carbonation. |

I had wanted to get a pint of Adnam's Bitter in The Phoenix, but it had been replaced by Greene King IPA, so I walked back out and went to the County instead. Fairly empty on a Monday early evening and I sat by the front window watching the world go by with a pint.
Marston's - Old Empire IPA | 5.70 | | Crystal clear copper colour with lasting partly creamy/bubbly beige head. Earthy hop aroma. Some hop, bit of ashtray. Bit farty on aroma too. Raspberry malty fruit in mouth, some hop bite on end. Sweet red fruit in mouth. Drying finish, hops battling with the sweetness. Juicy malt. Too sweet for me, not enough hop to balance, but interesting. |

Just before the lunchtime crowd came in to take advantage of the £4.99 Sunday roast plus a drink special. I got the last breakfast I think and also the York IPA coming back on at a marvellous 99p per pint.
York (now brewed by and at Black Sheep) - IPA | 5.00 | | Gold colour with lasting creamy beige head. Took severa pours to settle. Bit of diacetyl on aroma, butterscotch. Some good tingly hop on tip of tongue. Creamy and moderately full in mouth. Butterscotch aroma fades and you're left with a creamy pleasant bitter with some hop. Not quite hoppy enough for a true IPA. |

Aren't the new licensing laws great? There I was at 11pm at a loose end last night and I fancied a pint. I had been to a work do and Alistair said that he had had York IPA 5% ABV at this pub earlier in the evening. Not wanting to miss out, I wondered up to the bar, but the beer must have gone already. So I settled for a pint of Incubus and went to find a quiet corner, when I spied Phil and a couple of his fishing buddies. So a couple of pints later and staggered off home. Quite quiet really in the pub as most of the clientele had already moved off to the clubs.
Hopdaemon - Incubus | 4.00 | | Good rich fruity malt and aggressive hop finish. Sometimes though, it can feel a bit separated like the malt and hop aren't in total harmony. |
Eagle (formerly Wells & Young's, formerly Charles Wells, formerly Wells) - Courage Best Bitter (use Marston's entry now please) | 4.00 | Not Tried
Shepherd Neame - Spitfire (or Spitfire Amber Ale) | 4.20 | Not Tried
Greene King - Abbot | 5.00 | Not Tried
Marston's - Pedigree | 4.50 | Not Tried
Shepherd Neame - Bishops Finger | 5.00 | Not Tried

Just stopped in quickly for a pint at lunchtime. Three handpumps had "Guest beer - coming soon" signs on, the rest was the usual range found here. Reasonably busy on a Saturday lunchtime with too many screaming kids for my liking.
Hopdaemon - Incubus | 4.00 | | Drinkable enough. Nice rich fruity malt and balancing hop on end. |
Shepherd Neame - Spitfire (or Spitfire Amber Ale) | 4.20 | Not Tried
Greene King - Abbot | 5.00 | Not Tried
Marston's - Pedigree | 4.50 | Not Tried
Shepherd Neame - Bishops Finger | 5.00 | Not Tried
Theakston - Best Bitter | 3.80 | Not Tried

This was closed for a couple of days to fit a super new chiller for the beers. It seemed to be cleaner than I remember for some reason. Anyway not too busy early Friday evening, I got a booth, and I got to try another of the festival beers as well as a Thomas Hardy ale at room temperature.
Herold - Black Chalice | 4.80 | | Black colour with ruby edges. Bubbly tan head. Too much butter on the aroma for me. Sourish in mouth, but the dominated by butter/caramel. Faint dark malts make their way through, but I wasn’t keen. |

With Butcombe Blond on, I couldn't not go back could I? Early Bank Holiday Monday evening and I sat out the back like the previous day on the patio and read a book with a couple of pints of this.
Butcombe - Blonde | 5.00 | | If anything, slightly better condition than the day before. Seemed a bit more settled. Flavours, as before, of citrus, whilst still being juicy and in no way soapy. |
27 Aug 2006 (Ian)
I came in for an aperatif before Sunday lunch praying to find something blond and summery on and was most pleased to find one of my favourites, Butcombe Blond on. There was the usual mix of Spitfire, Abbot Ale (at 99p), Old Speckled Hen, Incubus, Directors and Pedigree on along with Elgoods Greyhound.
Butcombe - Blonde | 5.00 | | Pale gold colour with lasting white head. Citrusy hop aroma with juicy malt in the mouth and then lovely citrus fruit on the end. Lots of lemon and grapefruit and bits of tangerine. Lovely stuff. |

Wasn't doing anything in particular, so came in for a pint.
Theakston - Best Bitter | 3.80 | | Being sold off at 99p a pint, so I had to have a couple didn't I? Creamy session bitter, some caramel, some hop |
Greene King - 4-4-2 Sven's Formation | 4.00 | | Fine. Yeasty appley bitter with some burnt toffee and an earthy finish. Standard earthy session bitter. |

I can't believe that beer in the Folkestone Wetherspoon's and the beer here can taste so different. What's going on?
Everards (see entries against Joule's & Robinsons whilst its new brewery was being built) - Old Original | 5.20 | | Copper, thin white head. Malty hop aroma. Bit of ginger spice, malt sugars are ok in mouth, gives the beer body. Fine. |
Brains - SA Gold (now 4.3% see separate entry) | 4.70 | | Just a pale shadow of the delight that this was at the Folkestone Wetherspoon's the day before. |
