14 May 2006 (Ian)
Continuation of the May beer festival. Not overly busy on an early Sunday evening.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Banks's - Chocolate Mild4.30GoodOn first impression, nice and chocolatey, black beer with beige lasting head. Aroma of dark choc and roasted malt. Good in mouth, nice choc flavours. Intense choc on end. Simple but pleasurable
Titanic - Lifeboat Ale4.00AcceptableCopper colour, thin off white head. Not sure of beer quality on this. I think a good pint would be excellent, excellent hop, earthy, tangy, some good malt, red berry fruit. Bit sickly on finish
Hopdaemon - Incubus4.00Not Tried
Shepherd Neame - Early Bird4.30Not Tried
Eagle (formerly Wells & Young's, formerly Charles Wells, formerly Wells) - Young's London Special (was Special)4.50Not Tried
12 May 2006 (Ian)
The May Voyage of Discovery beer festival has started at JDW pubs so I will be visiting a fair few in the next 10 days to see what is on offer. Friday evening was sunny, so I sat outside and watched the early evening life pass by.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Robinsons - Young Tom4.00GoodCopper colour, lasting beige head. Good hoppy, muddy earthy citrus. It's quite a good bitter, some toffee/caramel and I am impressed with the hop flavours.
Hydes - Jekyll's Gold4.30AcceptableGolden, thin white yeasty beer, some caramel, fairly tasteless, some juicy syrup in mouth, farty yeasty. Not a wonderful bitter.
Caledonian - Dr Bobs Magic Potion3.50AcceptableDeep russet colour with thin beige head. Good toffee malt, soft in mouth, some coffee. Quite a lot of flavour for a light alcohol beer. Wettish in mouth as you'd expect, with toffee dominated hop dry finish. OK
Herold - Granat5.80PoorCopper, lasting beige head. Toffeeish lager. Bit sickly, sickly lager aroma, some dry, dusty hop on end, but frankly yucky.

I wasn't going to drink on this day, due to the pub crawl around Covent Garden the day before, but they had Gouden Carolus Blond on, so I had to have it. I mean how many places in England do you get a good draught Belgian 6% beer at a snip of £1.75 a pint? I sat in the smoking area by the window away from the screaming kids and their families in the non smoking area and read my Ian Rankin. Excellent.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Brouwerij Het Anker - Gouden Carolus Blond6.00GoodGolden beer with thick white head. Belgian yeast aroma with banana and peach. Soft in mouth with more peach/apricot fruit finish with a tingle of hop and dryness. Good easy drinking beer and deceptively strong.

The guest beers over the past couple of weeks seemed to have dried up. Perhaps they are between guest beers lists or just saving themselves up for the May beer festival that starts on 11 May. As long as they have Incubus on though, I am quite happy.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Hopdaemon - Incubus4.00GoodHad a couple of pints as a pre-lunch aperatif. I found a quiet corner by the window and read. Quite pleasant really. The beer had some of its good malty nature and sweetness and the hops were good enough to be interesting.
23 Apr 2006 (Ian)
You know what? I came here for Burns Night in January and they had haggis, neeps and tatties on special offer, a Caledonian beer and knock down price and whisky at £1 a single shot. Nice, I enjoyed it. What did they have for St George's Day? Nothing. Very disappointed. Fairly empty but then again it is just after Easter and the end of the month so no one has any money.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Hopdaemon - Incubus4.00GoodBetter than Friday night. Had some of that good intense rich red berry fruit and sharp hop. Still not perfect though. Perhaps I drink too much of this and I am becoming picky about it.
21 Apr 2006 (Ian)
It was 11.15 in the evening and I fancied a pint. So, now with the new licensing laws, I could have one. Wandered upto the pub, said hello to the nice female bouncer and had a pint. Cool.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Hopdaemon - Incubus4.00AcceptableSeemed a bit watery to me.
02 Apr 2006 (Ian)
Sunday early lunchtime and I got here before the children, but still had to move to find a quiet corner.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Dark Star - Espresso Stout4.20ExcellentBlack beer with beige head. Wonderful coffee aroma. Like opening a fresh jar of Maxwell House. Bit powdery in mouth, coffee everywhere with a dry powdery finish. Not exactly balanced. Enjoyable, but not subtle
Nethergate (was Nethergate Growler for a while then name reverted) - Old Growler5.00AcceptableVery deep ruby colour with thin beige head. Syrupy fruit aroma, choc/coffee. Oily in mouth and on finish. Touch of sour liquorice which gets stronger as it goes on. OK but not a big fan of this. Like a liquoricey porter
28 Mar 2006 (Ian)
Here with Alistair who was doing some research on pubs in Ashford in readiness for a train commuters meet up. Had a couple of pints before he had to catch his train back to Ramsgate. Normal early evening buzz in the bar.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Hopdaemon - Incubus4.00GoodLast pint out of the barrel. But lovely. Good rich malt fruit with good hop on end. Would have liked to have had another.
Coach House - Innkeepers Special Reserve4.50AcceptableBit of tea and tobacco in this dark brown best bitter. Bit watery in mouth
26 Mar 2006 (Ian)
I only came in for breakfast, but I made the mistake of bringing Beer and What's Brewing along with me. This made me thirsty so I had to have a beer. Very quiet on a Sunday morning which was wonderful. Then the families started arriving with their noisy children.....
BeerABVScoreNotes
Goffs - Jouster Ale4.00AcceptableCopper, thin head. Not sure on this one. A malty beer but with an odd chemical taste to it. Good hop finish

Early Sunday lunchtime had a smattering of customers. Just as I was enjoying my book and a half of beer, thinking, lovely, no screaming children, a family arrived accompanied by 2 screaming children. Nice.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Hopdaemon - Incubus4.00GoodNot quite at its best, but still a good supping pint with enough hop and fruity malt to make you want to have another
Robinsons - Enigma4.70AcceptableCopper colour with thin white head. Plenty of carbonation in glass. Yeasty hop aroma, some caramel in mouth before more yeast evident in the finish with some citrus. Carbonated in mouth. Pretty standard bitter. Bit more body than when I had it at the Folkestone Wetherspoons.
Bath Ales - Festivity Rum Porter5.00AcceptableBlack beer. Beige head. Deep ruby really. Thick in mouth. Is there toffee or diacetyl? But then better in mouth. Dark rum hints and black treacle. Quite oily. Not overly sure that this is how it should be.
Greene King - Morland Old Speckled Hen4.50Not Tried
Shepherd Neame - Spitfire (or Spitfire Amber Ale)4.20Not Tried
