I wanted tocelebrate not having my teeth pulled out by the dentist so I popped in for one on my way home. Usual Wetherspoons line up featuring Directors, Spitfire, Abbot and Bishops Finger amongst others
Hopdaemon - Incubus | 4.00 | | I'm always a bit weary of this in a Wetherspoon's as I know how good it can be. This was excellent. Just the right mix of rich malt and tangy herby hop. Really very good and I could have had more. |

Wetherspoons where I end up most weeks. Not overly busy this evening, so I sat and read my Terry Pratchett whilst trying a couple of beers
Wem (formerly Hanby) - Drawwell Bitter | 3.90 | | After 4 days of heavy Belgian beers, this came as a real relief. I was expecting the worst, but this all but restored my faith in British bitters. Copper colour with beige head. Hey this isn’t bad. Some red fruit in the aroma along with hop and faint yeast. Fullish in mouth helped by good malts with pleasant slightly sweet strawberries which then carry on to balance the dry finish. Very good bitter |
Exmoor - Gold | 4.50 | | Aroma is a bit eggy. Rest has a citrus strong golden ale aroma and flavour. Bit sweet in mouth with citrus on end. |

It was quite funny. There was a guy from South Africa trying to sign up another mug for his pyramid selling scheme for some energy drink at the table next door whilst I was trying to read my book. Another one born every minute. Anyway apart from this, I had a nice hour or so with a couple of pints and the latest Terry Pratchett
Shepherd Neame - Bishops Finger | 5.00 | | Ruby colour with lasting beige head. Fruity and yeasty aroma. Fine, just a bit odd. I mean nothing wrong with it. Been drinking too much foreign stuff lateley I guess. Bit of gingerish hopo. Smooth and bitter fruit malt is there but not over powering. I had more than 1, so it must have been ok |
Brains - Bread of Heaven | 4.00 | | Chestnut colour with lasting beige head. Yeasty, hoppy aroma. Some red fruit. OK in mouth, slightly watery. Finish has yeast and bitter hop. Fine bitter |
Greene King - Morland Old Speckled Hen | 4.50 | Not Tried
Eagle (formerly Wells & Young's, formerly Charles Wells, formerly Wells) - Courage Best Bitter (use Marston's entry now please) | 4.00 | Not Tried
Shepherd Neame - Spitfire (or Spitfire Amber Ale) | 4.20 | Not Tried
Greene King - Abbot | 5.00 | Not Tried

Tuesday, early evening. Relatively quiet in this Wetherspoon pub. Nice when its like this with the after work crowd in for a drink on their way home
Beartown (latterly part of Manning Brewers) - Bearly Literate | 4.50 | | Golden with lasting white head. Grassy hop aroma, some grapefruit/lime. Not served freezing cold for once. Not overly full in mouth, bit of a dirty flavour. Finish is a bit flat, some lemon acidity. Starts well and then fades |
Jennings (since closure now brewed at Marston's) - Sneck Lifter | 5.10 | | Deep ruby with thick lasting beige head. Some choc malts, some burntness. Aroma is a bit nasty. Bit thin in mouth. Poor effort at this beer. Is this the W&D influence? |
Hopdaemon - Incubus | 4.00 | Not Tried
Shepherd Neame - Spitfire (or Spitfire Amber Ale) | 4.20 | Not Tried
Greene King - Abbot | 5.00 | Not Tried

Burns Night! Haggis dinner for £1.99, Caledonian Ale Lang Syne for £1.29 a pint and whiskey for £1 a single. Great evening.
Caledonian - Ale Langs Syne | 4.60 | | Deep chestnut with creamy head. Yeasty nose, some nice dark malts in mouth. Finish is quite soft with some tingly hops. Needs more body and backbone but drinkable enough |
24 Jan 2006 (Ian)
Popped in after work for a quick pint to see what I had missed whilst I was in Liverpool.
Wood's - Quaff | 3.70 | | Does exactly what it says on the tin. Copper colour with thin off white head. Earthy resinous hop aroma. Light in mouth, excellent biting bitterness with tasty hops on then end. Excellent session bitter |
14 Jan 2006 (Ian)
Came in for breakfast and stayed a bit I suppose. There were a couple of new beers for me to try ad it seemed churlish for me to leave. Anyway, always good to have a few beers before watching the Manchester derby (which United lost much to my chagrin)
Cotleigh - Tawny | 3.80 | | Brownish copper colour with lasting bubbly beige head. I’ve always liked Cotleigh beers and this is no exception. Good hop/malt mix on the aroma. Hops have some earthiness. Malts are juicy and full in mouth. Finish has drying hop and a bit of herb. Fruits are red berry, bit of pear and red apple. Excellent session beer. |
Eagle (formerly Wells & Young's, formerly Charles Wells, formerly Wells) - Young's Winter Warmer | 5.00 | | Choc malts, deep flavours, warm attractive. Benefits from not being too dark and therefore having burnt roast malt. Touch of liquorice and stunningly good |
Butcombe - Brunel Atlantic IPA | 5.00 | | This beer is on Wetherspoons spring list of guest ales, so should make its way round to everyone. Copper colour with thin off white head. Good earthy hop. Warm malts in mouth with touch of chocolate. Smells like an orchard in autumn. Lots of good white flesh fruit, earthy bitter, drying hop finish. Very tasty. Full in mouth with heavy dose of Fuggles and Goldings on the end. |

Rooster's - Leghorn | 4.30 | Not Tried
09 Jan 2006 (Ian)
OK so I came in just for one of the Roosters Leghorn to try it. However, ended up having 3 whilst reading an Ian Rankin novel
Rooster's - Leghorn | 4.30 | | Slightly hazy (not quite ready yet) gold/red colour with thin off white lasting head. Typical Rooster’s aromatic US hop aroma. slightly nettlely and harsh. Lots of citrus, grapefruit and lemon flavours. Sweetish and full in mouth with juicy malt and then citrus hop zesty finish. Always like Rooster’s beers and this is no exception |
08 Jan 2006 (Ian)
I had been 10 pin bowling and finished around 10.30pm. Now in the olden days I would have gone straight home, but with the new licensing laws I could go for a drink. Which I did, and I'm glad I did because they had put the pump clip up for Rooster's Leghorn, but it wasn't ready yet, so I knew to come back on Monday to try it.
Burton Bridge - XL Bitter | 4.00 | | Deep copper colour with bubbly lasting head. Really good English hop/malt nose. Excellent supping best bitter. Slightly full in mouth with drying hop on end. Some toffee, clean, drinkable, slightly tart. Best bitter as it should be. Just a tad too wet in the mouth |
B&T (Banks & Taylor's) - Dragon Slayer | 4.50 | | Golden colour, thin white head. Attractive sweetish malt aroma. Good hops, citrus and tangy on the end |
08 Jan 2006 (Ian)
Not sure what I was doing in here, but I was. Whoops!
Hopdaemon - Incubus | 4.00 | | Looks as though Hopdaemon are supplying the Wetherspoons pubs in the area with Incubus on a regular basis, seen it in Folkestone, Ashford and Maidstone. This had some choc malt, some nice rich fruit flavour and some toffee. Hoppy finish. Thin and tinny compared to what it can be though |
B&T (Banks & Taylor's) - Dragon Slayer | 4.50 | Not Tried
