Late afternoon and very busy. Lively atmosphere with people enjoying the crack. Even in hard times good pubs do well.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Mordue - Workie Ticket4.50AcceptableServed colder than I would like. Coming to the end of the cask the malty flavour and full body dominated.
Houston - Killellan3.70AcceptableI remember this as a floral, lightly hopped beer. Today it was nondescript.

Been coming here since the halcyon days when Stewart managed the bar and cellar and The Marine, quite rightly, won its first CAMRA Scottish Pub of The Year. Nowadays, the beer selection is not quite so eclectic concentrating, as it does, on Scottish micros but this is compensated for by the excellent bottled beer list and interesting kegs.
BeerABVScoreNotes
BrewDog - 77 Lager4.90ExcellentSparkling in the glass and in the mouth this tastes like Martin Dickie's interpretation of a classic Czech beer - "tankova" Pilsner Urquell would be a good current comparison. Dark gold in colour with a long lasting creamy head it looked terrific. Aroma and taste matched and, served at cellar temperature, it was MUCH better than the bottled version.

13 Sep 2009 (McGargle)
Very busy late evening. Quick, friendly service - just wish we didn't have to fight through drinkers standing/sitting at the bar. You'd think they'd get fed up with being jostled but apparently not.
BeerABVScoreNotes
BrewDog - Punk IPA6.00GoodMuch better than the last sample. Full on hoppy aromas carried through to the taste balance by plenty of malt for mouthfeel.
27 Aug 2009 (McGargle)
Walk in the sea air, a swim for the dog and a beer for me. What could be better?
BeerABVScoreNotes
York (now brewed by and at Black Sheep) - Guzzler3.60ExcellentLight orange with a tight but fading head. Bitter fruit aromas carried forward to the taste. Good balance for a bitter bitter. Well brewed and well served.
BrewDog - Punk IPA6.00PoorOne of my favourite beers but off form tonight. Initial slightly acetic aroma faded to a unique North Indian curry smell. Harsh flavours subsided to give hints of what the beer should be. Either first pint of the day or, more likely, past its best.
Orkney (Sinclair) - Dark Island4.60Not TriedOthers were enjoying it.
12 Aug 2009 (McGargle)
Same beers as last visit except DIPA had replaced Nechtan.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Timothy Taylor - Landlord4.30PoorGreen.
Arran (formerly Isle of Arran) - Sunset4.40PoorHazy with unpleasant eggy/butyric acid aromas (not H2S) carried through to the taste. Problem in the brew not the cellar. First tasting since the brewery returned from administration. Not impressed.

Really busy but pleasant atmosphere.

Lovely evening to sit on the harbour wall with a glass. Sailors, kayakers and sea cadets all busy but more importantly The Marine fridge was restocked with Belgian ales from Boon, Cantillon etc.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Timothy Taylor - Landlord4.30ExcellentOn the top of its form tonight. Excellent balance of malt and hops with 'we're brewing' aromas. I like hop bombs on occasions but this was the classic British pint.
Belhaven - Caledonian Deuchars IPA3.80Not Tried
Arran (formerly Isle of Arran) - Sunset4.40Not TriedGood to see this back in circulation.

23 Jul 2009 (McGargle)
There can be few finer places to enjoy to enjoy a glass of fine ale on a sunny afternoon than The Marine's harbour wall. That the ale was followed by the last bottle of Boon's Oude Geuze was perfect.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Cairngorm - Trade Winds4.30Good'S funny how beers evolve over time. This was darker and more malty than earlier brews and lacked the citrus/elderflower attack that was its trademark. Still a fine beer though served in good condition.
20 Jun 2009 (McGargle)
Very busy after the rugby on TV>
