Never been here before but a friend had said it was a proper old boozer so I thought I’d give it a shot. What a superb pub it is. You come in the front door into a long corridor that goes 30 or so metres into the pub straight to the rear and the toilets. Along the corridor are a number of doors to the public bar, the saloon and the another bar whose name I forget. It reminded me of the kind of pubs I used to frequent when I lived in York. In the Saloon bar where I sat there was bloke who’d turned up with his guitar and was playing Don McClain songs. He just sat there with a pint of Late Red and sang out his songs. Fantastic.

Shepherd Neame - Late Red4.50AcceptableNothing wrong with it but it didn’t blow my world away. Some tart-ish sweet malt.
Shepherd Neame - Canterbury Jack3.50AcceptableIf you’ve seen last month’s edition of Camra’s Beer magazine you’ll have seen that this beer was reviewed and did quite well. One of the reviewers was a well known RateBeer doyen who thought it was quite good. For me it was a frivolous light lemony bit of pointless fluff.

Town centre pub with mix of locals and tourists. Fairly busy Saturday lunchtime with a number of people eating.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Shepherd Neame - Master Brew Bitter3.70AcceptableEarthy yeasty aroma. Yeast flavour in mouth, bit of earthy caramel and then tingly bitter finish. If it wasn't for the finish, it wouldn't have any flavour. Disappointing.
