03 Feb 2018 (Stephen Harris)
I had decided that I did not have enough time available in Dover to do the beer festival justice and would visit a few pubs instead. There were plenty of people I knew here (Leyton Orient have a match in town today), several of whom had reached the same conclusion. I again really enjoyed this pub.
Downlands (formerly South Downs) - Hop Contract #6 | 4.30 | | My kind of thing – pale and hoppy with Simcoe, Centennial and Wai-iti hops. |
Kent - KGB or Kent Golding Bitter | 4.10 | Not Tried
Canterbury Ales (sometimes badged as Canterbrew) - The Knight's Ale | 4.60 | Not Tried
Kent - Session Pale | 3.70 | Not Tried
Musket - Flintlock Best Bitter | 4.20 | Not Tried
02 Feb 2018 (Jack William)
In Dover for the beer festival - rude not to pop in here as well. Busy with comings and goings mainly to and from the festival.
Old Dairy (being contract brewed after it closed) - Über Brew | 3.80 | | Absolutely delicious. |
Downlands (formerly South Downs) - Mosaic | 4.80 | | Seemed a little insipid for a 4.8 |
Kent - Black Gold | 4.00 | Not Tried
Musket - Flintlock Best Bitter | 4.20 | Not Tried
Downlands (formerly South Downs) - Best | 4.10 | Not Tried
02 Feb 2018 (Dosser)
Packed before the beer festival
Downlands (formerly South Downs) - Mosaic | 4.80 | | Very nice |
14 Dec 2017 (Jack William)
Mid afternoon- our party of 7 got all the comfy leather seats and settled in for a few bevvies. Busy for all of the couple of hours we were here and two changes of real ales in that time. The death of the English pub has surely been exaggerated.
Ramsgate Brewery (Gadds') - Black Pearl Oyster Stout | 6.20 | | Opulent indeed. |
Downlands (formerly South Downs) - Bramber | 4.50 | | Absolutely delicious and fresh on.
|
Dark Star - Festival | 5.00 | | Good - but not in the same class as their lighter ales. |
Kent - Olicana | 4.50 | | Nice dry bitterness. |
Kent - Session Pale | 3.70 | | Rather flowery and oversweet.
|
Ramsgate Brewery (Gadds') - No. 7 | 3.80 | Not Tried
Rockin Robin - Reliant Robin | 3.70 | Not Tried
07 Dec 2017 (Philip Pirrip)
Late evening visit. Good chat about beer festivals and the local pub and beer scene.
Angels & Demons (now uses McCanns branding not its own) - Bombay Social | 3.80 | | In one word "Superb". Pity that only a last train home interrupted further quaffing |
Ramsgate Brewery (Gadds') - Seasider | 4.30 | Not Tried
Kent - Cobnut | 4.10 | Not Tried
Dark Star - Partridge Best Bitter | 4.00 | Not Tried
Musket - Powder Burn | 5.00 | Not Tried
20 Oct 2017 (Jack William)
A Friday bike tour of my two favourite pubs in the area.
Late afternoon - a dozen or so regulars most of who I recognised. Good conversation and warm welcome from the hosts as usual.
Angels & Demons (now uses McCanns branding not its own) - A.D.H. ME | 5.20 | | A superb APA, perfect balance and top condition. |
Old Dairy (being contract brewed after it closed) - Über Brew | 3.80 | | Hoppy, pale ale with a little sweetness. Very good body for a 3.8 |
Hop Fuzz - Martello (superseded by 4.4% then 4.5% versions) | 3.80 | Not Tried
Pig & Porter - Fatal Flaw American Amber | 4.50 | Not Tried
Range Ales - Black Ops | 4.80 | Not Tried
26 Sep 2017 (Jack William)
Early afternoon - Keith let me take my bike inside as they weren't very busy. Good chat with a couple of other drinkers.
Kent - Brewers Reserve | 5.00 | | Superb. |
Old Dairy (being contract brewed after it closed) - Green Hop (2016 with Challenger) | 4.00 | | 2017 brew obviously - with Challenger hops.
Good flavour if a bit "soft" for green hop. |
Goody Ales - Bleangate Brewery - Good Health | 3.60 | Not Tried
Hop Fuzz - English | 4.00 | Not Tried
Kent - The New Black | 4.80 | Not Tried
01 Sep 2017 (Jack William)
Quick lunchtime stop on a 50 mile cycle - that turned into a bit longer due to an unpredicted thunderstorm. Good conversations plus a bit of a heated exchange with the local CAMRA man (not about beer though).
Pig & Porter - Skylarking | 4.00 | | Top class summer ale. |
Caveman (latterly a cuckoo at Leatherbritches) - Neolithic | 4.10
Hop Fuzz - English | 4.00 | | |
Goody Ales - Bleangate Brewery - Good Innings | 4.60 | Not Tried
Musket - Muzzleloader | 4.50 | Not Tried
27 Jul 2017 (Jack William)
Late afternoon - pleasantly busy. Conversation about narrowboating with a couple of the Beery Boaters.
Romney Marsh - Marsh Gold | 4.10 | | Mellow - but with a lovely dry after-bite. |
Rockin Robin - RPA | 3.90 | | |
Goody Ales - Bleangate Brewery - Goodness Gracious Me! | 4.80
Canterbury Ales (sometimes badged as Canterbrew) - The Knight's Ale | 4.60 | Not Tried
Tonbridge - Traditional | 3.60 | Not Tried
09 Jun 2017 (Philip Pirrip)
Late evening, the Lanes were off duty and away.
Kent - Zingiber | 4.10 | | 4½* as pretty much as good as you'll get with this beer |
Ramsgate Brewery (Gadds') - Black Pearl Oyster Stout | 6.20
Rockin Robin - Reckless Robin | 4.50 | Not Tried
Canterbury Ales (sometimes badged as Canterbrew) - Single Hop Mosaic | 5.00 | Not Tried
Romney Marsh - Marsh Gold | 4.10 | Not Tried | Ran out |
Angels & Demons (now uses McCanns branding not its own) - McCanns Harry Hop | 3.70 | Not Tried | Annoying mix up with Angel & Demons and McCanns names, implying two breweries not just the single one. It just muddies provenance |
