24 Jul 2010 (Alenomore)
Saturday morning and fairly busy.
Wantsum - Hengist | 5.00 | | In good condition. |
Arundel - Footslogger | 4.40 | Not Tried
Harviestoun - Schiehallion | 4.80 | Not Tried

18 Apr 2010 (Ian)
As part of the Ratebeer.com wireless tasting.
Otter - Otter Mild | 3.80 | | Fabulous mild, lots of fruit. Just outstanding. |
BrewDog - Trashy Blonde | 4.10 | | The first half I had on the way through was stunning, the pint took a long time to pour and it looked hazy and a long time to settle, bit dubious. |
Mauldons - Thomas' Tipple | 4.50 | | Copper gold with a disappearing head. Doesn’t look in very good nick. It’s a little on the rubbery side to be honest. I’ve visited the brewery and always liked their beers and have a soft spot for them. It’s a bitter with some ok malts, some fruit, a bit cereally on the flavour. But there is this rubber thing going on that makes it less than attractive. Shame as the rest of the beer is pretty solid. Some drying hop on end. Could be a very good bitter if the rubber wasn’t there. |
Beartown (latterly part of Manning Brewers) - Peach Melbear | 4.40 | | It was ok, but the peach was too sweet and artificial and not sure a bitter works with sweet. |
10 Apr 2010 (Ian)
Saturday mid afternoon not overly busy, just popped in to see what was on.
Thwaites - Summat Special | 4.00 | | Copper with lasting thick ivory head. It's a bitter. Drinks ok in mouth, ok fullness. Has a bitterness on finish. A competent if not exciting bitter. |
07 Apr 2010 (Ian)
Just popped in on the way back to the station, glad to see the St Peters beer on.
St Peter's - Old Style Porter | 5.10 | | Great condition really. Good full flavour. Decent bitter roasted malts, some toffee. Good though |
27 Mar 2010 (Blair)
Had 40 minutes until our train and this is always a pub you can rely on to have at least one interesting beer, and once again it didn't disappoint. Sat at the windows by the entrance and watched passers by. This probably is my favourite wetherspoons pub around.
Brewster's - Ice Queen | 4.80 | | Light, slightly sweet, hoppy ale. Really refreshing and pretty good. |
Greene King - Ruddles Best (was 3.7%) | 3.40 | Not Tried
Dorset Brewing Company - Ammonite | 4.50 | Not Tried
20 Mar 2010 (Ian)
Stop no. 4 on the whistle stop tour of Canterbury. Heaving on a Saturday night, but still served quite promptly. Very different clientele to Bramleys where I was just before.
Brewster's - Ice Queen | 4.80 | | Lovely hop. Good condition. Sank a pint very quickly. |
13 Sep 2009 (Blair)
First port of call in our mini crawl of canterbury. Arrived at around 4 and it was quite busy.
Summerskills - Barley Mow | 4.80 | | I really liked this beer a lot. Very smooth and dark. Plenty of roasted malt and caramel. A lovely mild. |
Greene King - Abbot | 5.00 | Not Tried
Marston's - Pedigree | 4.50 | Not Tried
Greene King - Ruddles Best (was 3.7%) | 3.40 | Not Tried
Loddon - Hullabaloo | 4.20 | Not Tried
20 Jan 2009 (Ian)
There was a problem with a broken down train outside Folkestone station, so I took the long route home via Dover and Canterbury, which meant I had half an hour to kill in the city. I didn't want to miss my train from West so ended up down here. Pretty empty apart from a middle aged couple taking advantage of the free wifi service in 'Spoons on matching Apple iBooks.
Coach House - Cromwell | 4.00 | | It's a brown bitter. Some decent malt and raspberry type fruit on the aroma, some decent caramel malt in the mouth and flavour, good condition, some hoppy bite on the finish. As I said, a bitter. |
Greene King - IPA (was 3.6%) | 3.40 | Not Tried | It's everywhere |
19 Jul 2008 (Blair)
Got to Canterbury a little early for the first shuttle bus to the festival. Popped in here for a pint first. Drinking before 11 in the morning, what was I thinking.
Hopdaemon - Incubus | 4.00 | | Good pint of this, if a little cold. Malty and creamy. |
Greene King - IPA (was 3.6%) | 3.40 | Not Tried
Brains - SA | 4.20 | Not Tried
Greene King - Abbot | 5.00 | Not Tried
Badger (Hall & Woodhouse) - Tanglefoot (was 4.9%) | 4.70 | Not Tried
08 Jul 2008 (Blair)
Very busy, shame that the busiest pubs in Canterbury on a tuesday are Wetherspoons, oh well.
Marston's - Pedigree | 4.50 | | I resented having to drink this, but I didn't have much choice. Overly sweet and cloying. But as Pedigree goes this wasn't a complete disaster. |
Shepherd Neame - Spitfire (or Spitfire Amber Ale) | 4.20 | Not Tried
Greene King - Abbot | 5.00 | Not Tried
Hanlons (formerly O'Hanlon's) - Original Port Stout | 4.80 | Not Tried | Went off as I ordered it, I was not best pleased! |
Eagle (formerly Wells & Young's, formerly Charles Wells, formerly Wells) - Young's Waggledance | 5.00 | Not Tried
