Not quite as manic as the other Wetherspoon so was able to get a table and a bite to eat as well mid afternoon.
Oakham - Raucous Reindeer | 4.00 | | Crisp and hoppy with the characteristic citrus twist. My score 15/20. |
Burton Bridge - Santi-Freeze | 4.50 | Not Tried
Marston's - Christmas Pudding Spiced Ale | 3.90 | Not Tried
27 Dec 2010 (Ian)
Busy mid afternoon. Struggled to find a seat
Oakham - Raucous Reindeer | 4.00 | | Distinctive Oakham hoppy goodness with a little more malt. Hop verges on the soapy |
Marston's - Christmas Pudding Spiced Ale | 3.90 | | Tasted like Pedigree to me. Hard to detect any spice |

Early Friday evening. I was quite drunk by now but that didn't stop me having a few more beers.
Shepherd Neame - Sam Adams Blonde Ambition (superseded by 4.5% version) | 5.50 | | Gold, thin white head. Now, that has loads of Canterbury cascades and I'm drinking this in Canterbury. Sherbert aroma. It's alright. Hops are good but not overstated, but presence is felt throughout. I like the soft subtle sherbert cascades. Love the lemon sherbert dib dab aroma. OK got to the end of the half pint and still just sherbert drinkable, but so much sherbert. |
Maxim - Phoenix Rising | 4.50 | | Brown/russet. Some caramel, some hop on finish. It's a bitter. Touch of wateryness. It's a bitter. Some sting on finish. |
Batemans - Wheat Dreams | 4.60 | | Clear copper gold, lasting off white head. Batemans house yeast all over it. Farty yest dominates the aroma with a touch of lemon. It's not much in mouth, some biscuit. Some dryness on finish. Wheat beer? Fart yeast and biscuit dominate. |
24 Oct 2010 (Blair)
45 minutes to wait until the train home, good enough reason. Already jammed full at just gone midday so we grabbed a table on the smoke terrace. Sat and drank away the hangovers before heading back to Thanet.
St Austell - Proper Job | 4.50 | | Went down very easily for how hungover I was, must have been good. Sweet, malty and a little fruity. Proper good beer. |
22 Oct 2010 (Blair)
First port of call on our night out in Canterbury. Really busy in, like it is most times I've been here. Definitely one of my favourite Spoons pubs, although the tequila was entirely unnecessary.
Wantsum - Black Pig | 4.80 | | Tastes better than when I first had it but still a tad watery. Has all the qualities you want in a porter just needs to amp it up a bit. |
Wantsum - Hengist | 5.00 | | I was pleasantly surprised by this one. Bready, biscuity ale with a little caramel and fruit. Not too shabby. |
Mauldons - Black Adder | 5.30 | Not Tried
Greene King - Abbot | 5.00 | Not Tried
Greene King - Ruddles Best (was 3.7%) | 3.40 | Not Tried
08 Oct 2010 (Ian)
Had half an hour before the train went so popped in to see what was on. Two Wantsum beers were present.
Hanlons (formerly O'Hanlon's) - Stormstay | 5.00 | | Touch of diacetyl on aroma, but settled down into a decent beer with interesting malt flavours and touch of hop on finish. |
24 Jul 2010 (Alenomore)
Saturday morning and fairly busy.
Wantsum - Hengist | 5.00 | | In good condition. |
Arundel - Footslogger | 4.40 | Not Tried
Harviestoun - Schiehallion | 4.80 | Not Tried
Brains - SA Gold (now 4.3% see separate entry) | 4.70 | Not Tried
18 Apr 2010 (Ian)
As part of the Ratebeer.com wireless tasting.
Otter - Otter Mild | 3.80 | | Fabulous mild, lots of fruit. Just outstanding. |
BrewDog - Trashy Blonde | 4.10 | | The first half I had on the way through was stunning, the pint took a long time to pour and it looked hazy and a long time to settle, bit dubious. |
Mauldons - Thomas' Tipple | 4.50 | | Copper gold with a disappearing head. Doesn’t look in very good nick. It’s a little on the rubbery side to be honest. I’ve visited the brewery and always liked their beers and have a soft spot for them. It’s a bitter with some ok malts, some fruit, a bit cereally on the flavour. But there is this rubber thing going on that makes it less than attractive. Shame as the rest of the beer is pretty solid. Some drying hop on end. Could be a very good bitter if the rubber wasn’t there. |
Beartown (latterly part of Manning Brewers) - Peach Melbear | 4.40 | | It was ok, but the peach was too sweet and artificial and not sure a bitter works with sweet. |
