It's in a good location, but not my favourite pub in Canterbury.
BeerABVScoreNotes
York (now brewed by and at Black Sheep) - Nugget4.00GoodGold, lasting beige head. Citrusy, grapefruit, nutty, slightly herby beer. Decent sherbert finish. Interesting beer, plenty of flavour. Hops and walmuts. Good, my kind of golden bitter. Good bitterness on finish.
20 May 2007 (Ian)
It's a Spoons.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Arkell's - Kingsdown Special Ale5.00AcceptableNever liked this beer and I still don't
21 Dec 2006 (Ian)
Came here for a drink after my works team meal in Cafe des Amis across the roundabout. Not too busy, but it was quite nice sat by the windows watching the world go by.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Rebellion - Sleighed4.20AcceptablePale gold, lasting off white head. Little bit yeasty. Quite rich hop, slightly sweat, slightly sweaty. Bit grassy on end. Some juicy malt. Not a bad sweetish blond beer. Fullish in mouth.
28 Oct 2006 (Ian)
Now completely non smoking with more seating than you first suppose. Not always my favourite Spoons, but it did have a new beer for me. Quite busy really on a late Saturday afternoon.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Ecaussinnes - Ultramour5.00AcceptableBadged as Ecaussinnes Fruit Beer. Cloudy russet colour with lasting thick beige head. Sweet raspberry aroma, like kids sweets, bit of sourness in mouth, bit medicinal. Served very cold. Really overly sweet. Like raspberry ripple ice cream on end. Not awful, but it is ovely sweet in mouth even though the aftertaste is pretty good.

Right, I am banning myself from coming in here again. The beer is more expensive for no apparent reason and the quality in my opinion is the worst of any Wetherspoon's I know. Even worse than the County Hotel in Ashford (Folkestone and Thomas Ingoldsby in Canterbury are both far superior in beer quality than either of these). Saturday lunchtime and it was almost full.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Batemans - Dark Lord (superseded by 4.4% version)5.00PoorRuby brown colour with thin off white head. Toffe and liquorice on aroma and in mouth. Some powdery choc/coffee towards the end. Could be affected by diacetyl, also served too cold. Alternatively it is a toffee/liquorice dark porter style beer. Not great like this though
15 Dec 2005 (Ian)
Reasonably busy on a Thursday evening. Now 100% no smoking. Had to move tables to allow a Xmas party to have a bit more space.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Phoenix - Navvy3.80PoorCan’t tell whether this is diacetyl heavy or its supposed to have som much buttery toffee on it, but given a bit of thought, I tend towards the former. Butterscotch and hop on aroma, bit bready too. OK in mouth, bit sour with hop on finish, which is really quite drying
01 Sep 2005 (Ian)
Now 100% non smoking except for the little interior patio. Lots of little drinking areas with a couple of guests on as well as the usual line up.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Oakham - JHB3.80ExcellentCertainly better than the pint at The Thomas Ingoldsby. Nice grapefruit aroma, lacks a bit of structure but with a good hop finish. Almost there
De Koninck - De Koninck5.00UndrinkableHad to return this. Had horrible chemical smell and taste. Changed it for a pint of JHB

Wetherspoons by the Westgate in Canterbury. Did not actually have anything in there, I was just passing, but as a matter of interest it now does Sierra Nevada Pale Ale in bottles at the same price as in Sainsburys. Mind you trying to buy one was virtually impossible as it kept coming up as zero money. So I told the barmaid that I really wanted 2. Ha ha ha ha ha. Guy next to me at the bar thought this was hilarious.

Saying that this pub serves beer well is like Mark Anthony saying that Brutus was an honourable man. Hophead was 1/5 and I had to return the pint so ended up with a bottle of Erdinger Weiss as they couldn't cock that up. Pint of Hophead in Thomas Ingoldsby was £1.69, but £1.75 at Westgate.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Dark Star - Hophead was 3.8% (some has also been brewed by Fuller's)3.40UndrinkableTook 3 sips, realised it was off and took it back. Shame really as this is a cracking pint

By the Westgate in Canterbury. Has improved their beer a lot over the past couple of years. Bit quieter than the other Wetherspoon's in Canterbury. It is helped by not being so big and having different drinking areas
BeerABVScoreNotes
Oakham - Raucous Reindeer4.00GoodTypical Oakham taste. Bit darker and maltier than their other beers
Hardys & Hansons (see now and use Greene King for new entries) - Starbright5.00AcceptablePale strong bitter with some hops and some malt
