Quite late in the evening, as the quiz was coming to an end and in time to see the last few minutes of the Liverpool v Leeds match.

Quick visit on passing. No Monday night crowds here with just a scattering of customers at 9pm. Pleased to be offered a 10% CAMRA discount, a new development here.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Big Penny (formerly Truman's) as of late 2022 contract brewed - Zephyr4.40AcceptableAn unusually mellow pint of this beer which is usually fizzing with condition.

Late evening beer after a full day out in Suffolk. Loud in here with lots of American-style Halloween goings on.
BeerABVScoreNotes

23 Oct 2016 (Stephen Harris)
A late pint, fresh off the Eurostar after four days in Brussels where (and nobody will believe this) I did not see the inside of a pub. This pub was almost empty by 10:30pm.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Hammerton - N75.20ExcellentI’m in danger of become rather partial to this one.

18 Oct 2016 (Stephen Harris)
Mid to late-evening visit with the crowds present for the weekly pub quiz.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Hammerton - N75.20ExceptionalThis really hit the spot tonight. A superb, full-blown US-style Pale Ale.
Big Penny (formerly Truman's) as of late 2022 contract brewed - Runner4.00AcceptableTruman’s best-known beer and it is a very traditional dark London Bitter – not a style that much excites me much anymore.
12 Oct 2016 (Stephen Harris)
A late evening visit and I even made it to ‘last orders’, not a call I hear very often these days.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Bristol Beer Factory - Milk Stout4.50ExcellentAlways a nice discovery on a bar. I should probably describe it as ‘nourishing’.
Gipsy Hill - Southpaw4.20Not Tried
06 Oct 2016 (Stephen Harris)
Late evening. Quiet.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Big Penny (formerly Truman's) as of late 2022 contract brewed - Zephyr4.40GoodI’ve been drinking some proper US West Coast hop bombs tonight, so this tasted a bit unbalanced in comparison.
Big Penny (formerly Truman's) as of late 2022 contract brewed - Treason4.50GoodAn amber-coloured Bitter with nice hops.
30 Sep 2016 (Stephen Harris)
An evening out with a friend who wants to catch up on some east London pubs he’s not been to before, or not for a while. We start here as this pub will become thronged and loud later in the evening.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Signature Brew - Candela Gold5.00GoodGolden in colour and quite full-bodied. A bit of an acquired taste (which I’m still in the process of acquiring). Simcoe hops giving something of a passion fruit flavour (although I note that in an earlier report I said there was added fruit juice).
Signature Brew - Red Wedge4.70Not Tried
15 Sep 2016 (Stephen Harris)
Late evening and the pub is quiet.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Wild Beer Co. - Bibble4.20ExcellentThis pint could have been a degree or two cooler, but it is still obviously a classy beer.
Big Penny (formerly Truman's) as of late 2022 contract brewed - Lazarus4.20Not Tried

The pub is found in Leyton, Greater London, E15 2BX.

This pub was established in 1887 as the King Harold, replacing the former Grenadier, which had stood further north in Leyton. It was a Savill Brothers pub (the local brewery at the time), eventually passing to Charrington’s. By the turn of the twenty-first century this pub had acquired an exceedingly seedy reputation. To nobody’s surprise, it eventually closed in 2015, but re-opened in July 2016 as the Leyton Star, much refurbished and beautified. It occupies a street corner position, close to Leyton tube station. A large single bar with an upstairs function room (formerly used as a gym). Rear garden. Four handpumps on the bar. CAMRA discount available.

We have visited this pub 74 times, seen 75 different beers and tried 52 of them.
