A late evening visit on my way home from a business trip to Brussels. Pub still quite busy at 11pm.

Signature Brew - Backstage IPA5.60ExcellentVery good indeed.

A quick late-evening visit as I was passing and thought I might use the facilities. For this I had to brave bouncers on the door and the indignity of having my bag squeezed.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Signature Brew - Coconut Disco4.80ExcellentA golden beer, flavoured with lime and coconut. Much better than it sounds, with the lime flavours winning out over the coconut. I actually really enjoyed it.
Ilkley - Pale4.20Not Tried
Hammerton - N14.10Not Tried

In here for a quick one in the mid-evening whilst the West Ham and Chelsea hoards were otherwise occupied nearby. I guess Jason and my paths may have crossed here. 10% CAMRA discount obtained.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Signature Brew - Nightliner5.70GoodA black, coffee-flavoured porter. Very strongly flavoured in fact. I don’t always take to coffee flavours, but this was pretty good.
Arbor Ales - Blue Sky Drinking4.40Not Tried

Final pub on a tour organised by Jason of this site. The Chelsea v West Ham game was on the television, we decided to head for Stratford International Station before the crowds arrived.

Mid evening fairly busy but not overbearing considering the West Ham Chelsea game was in full swing on a few TV screens dotted around the pub.

Late-evening visit. The Tuesday Quiz has just finished and has clearly drawn a big crowd.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Brighton Bier - South Coast IPA5.00GoodA good, dry, pale, hoppy IPA – served just a shade warm here.
Big Penny (formerly Truman's) as of late 2022 contract brewed - Runner4.00Not Tried
16 Jan 2017 (Stephen Harris)
A steady trade here on a Monday evening. The burger menu seems to be very popular.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Signature Brew - Session N.Z. hopped bitter (Pacifica)4.00GoodHand-written pump clip which said ‘NZ Bitter’. I’m really not sure whether the ‘Session’ and the ‘Session NZ-hopped’ are actually different beers (the brewer once told me they were not). Anyway, this comes across as a standard brown Bitter with livelier than usual hops.
Big Penny (formerly Truman's) as of late 2022 contract brewed - Attaboy4.60AcceptableAnother disappointing, middle-of-the-road, golden Pale Ale from Truman’s. Lacked any of the citrus hop bite that it had when this beer was first brewed.
02 Jan 2017 (Stephen Harris)
Mid-evening. Busy when I arrived. There has been football at the Olympic Stadium and it seems that it did not go well. The crowds soon dissipate.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Signature Brew - Backstage IPA5.60ExcellentA full-bodied and bitter IPA in great condition. Easily good enough to have a couple.
Big Penny (formerly Truman's) as of late 2022 contract brewed - Runner4.00AcceptableA real old-fashioned, dark, traditional Bitter. Just not my thing any more.
21 Dec 2016 (Stephen Harris)
A quick visit in passing, mostly to avail myself of their free WiFi facility (well, free for the cost of a pint that is).
BeerABVScoreNotes
Dark Revolution - Velveteen4.80GoodA smooth, black Milk Stout that is drier and less lactose sweet than usual for a Milk Stout.
Big Penny (formerly Truman's) as of late 2022 contract brewed - Original Porter4.50Not Tried
06 Dec 2016 (Stephen Harris)
It’s quiz night again, although a smaller number of teams than usual as it is a “Star Wars”-themed quiz. I’m pleased to realise that I know not one answer to any of the questions I overhear.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Bristol Beer Factory - Bitter Kiwi5.00GoodVery nice flavours, but rather tired condition – a ‘good’ on balance I think.
Big Penny (formerly Truman's) as of late 2022 contract brewed - Sampson Strong5.80GoodCrikey, here’s a beer name from the past, bringing back distant memories of misspent youth. Amber in colour and a malty taste. Is the taste authentic? I honestly don’t remember, but it’s a pretty decent beer in the ESB / Burton Ale tradition.

The pub is found in Leyton, Greater London, E15 2BX.

This pub was established in 1887 as the King Harold, replacing the former Grenadier, which had stood further north in Leyton. It was a Savill Brothers pub (the local brewery at the time), eventually passing to Charrington’s. By the turn of the twenty-first century this pub had acquired an exceedingly seedy reputation. To nobody’s surprise, it eventually closed in 2015, but re-opened in July 2016 as the Leyton Star, much refurbished and beautified. It occupies a street corner position, close to Leyton tube station. A large single bar with an upstairs function room (formerly used as a gym). Rear garden. Four handpumps on the bar. CAMRA discount available.

We have visited this pub 74 times, seen 75 different beers and tried 52 of them.
