2310 'til midnight. A friendly relaxed atmosphere. Got into conversation with a Sandford Orchards cider drinking gentlemen who had been on the electric Hayes train hit from behind by the steam Ramsgate train in the 1957 Lewisham railway crash. He was sitting in a coach towards the front and felt more of a jolt. Live history.
Hopdaemon - Burnham No 3 Pale Session Bitter | 3.80 | | For its strength very full flavoured bitter sweet mix. Only £2.50 pp compared with the rest at £3.40. Some debate about its provenance although clearly brewed by Hopdaemon as stated on the clip. Pub has already had a No 2! The pub's owner Antic is planning to set up its own brewery so the guess is that it has created the Burnham brand and is temporarily contracting out the brewing to Hopdaemon |
Kent - Black Gold | 4.00 | Not Tried
Devilfish - Stingray | 5.50 | Not Tried
Otley - O4 Columbo | 4.00 | Not Tried
08 Jul 2012 (Philip Pirrip)
Visit was late until close. Once again staff were very friendly and knowledgeable. I recommend a visit here and to The Ravensbourne Arms nearby to all Pubs and Beer correspondents and browsers - you will be pleasantly surprised in South East London.
Kernel (The Kernel) - India Pale Ale - Citra (on keg) | 7.30 | | Had 2 of these even at £5 pp. Cloudy keg but full of flavour |
Kent - Zingiber | 4.10 | | Thought this tasted more watery than on previous quaffs so, rarely, did not linger with a second pint of the same I'd usually have when Zingibering |
Oakham - JHB | 3.80 | Not Tried
Belhaven - Caledonian Deuchars IPA | 3.80 | Not Tried
St Austell - Tribute | 4.20 | Not Tried
Otley - O5 Gold | 5.00 | Not Tried

27 Jun 2012 (Philip Pirrip)
2315 hours visit until close. Last orders called 2335 for 2345 shutters down - about 15 minutes earlier than the usual midnighter I thought.
St Peter's - Ruby Red Ale | 4.30 | | Held a good head and in good nick. These, what I call, Irish Reds not really to my palate |
Otley - Oxymoron | 5.50 | | Sophisticated tastes as the pint went down. Good head throughout and liquorice tones emerged perhaps half way down. Badged as one of the Otley limited brew range that are currently ubiquitous |
Thornbridge / Thornbridge Hall - Lord Marples | 4.00 | | Did not have the body or full taste I expected |
24 Jun 2012 (Stephen Harris)
You can’t beat a good day out around the Lewisham area, and that was my fate today. This is a great revival of this formerly rather dubious pub. Plenty of families arriving for Sunday lunch, and notably pleasant service.
Hardknott - Light Cascade | 3.40 | | Low strength, high hop rate. Quite dry. Amber coloured. |
Binghams - Doodle Stout | 5.00 | | A full-on, black, roasted stout with some fruity hops in the finish. |
Windsor & Eton - Knight of the Garter | 3.80 | Not Tried
Grain - Blonde Ash | 4.00 | Not Tried
Tiny Rebel - Cwtch | 4.60 | Not Tried
20 Jun 2012 (Philip Pirrip)
Fairly well patronised mid to late evening.
Redemption - Hopspur | 4.50 | | Probably not fully conditioned not holding its head but still enjoyable |
Grain - Blonde Ash | 4.00 | | A cloudy Belgian style beer |
Binghams - Doodle Stout | 5.00 | | A sweet tasting stout |
Pitfield's - Hewitt's Un-hung Hero | 5.00 | Not Tried
02 Jun 2012 (Philip Pirrip)
2358 hours visit so dated for Saturday. Pub bustling - perhaps a refuge from persistent heavy rain outside. Comparatively small range of handpumped real ales tonight.
Thornbridge / Thornbridge Hall - Frank as Apollo | 4.60 | | A flattish pint - no head |
Pitfield's - Hewitt's Red Menis | 3.80 | Not Tried
RCH - Bristol Brewers United: Smoked Porter Collaboration 2012 | 6.00 | Not Tried | The clip showed Bristol Brewers United to include Bristol Beer Factory, GWB, RCH, Arbor Ales, Zerodegrees and Bath Ales |
Ilkley - Jubilee | 4.50 | Not Tried
19 May 2012 (Philip Pirrip)
Late evening visit into last knockings. Much of the superb old Courage interior is on show here.
By The Horns - Bobby on the Wheat | 4.70 | | Absolutely first rate. Cloudy wheat beer with full flavour. Almost faultless |
Boggart - Dren | 3.60 | | 2nd and 3rd out were excellent. Boggart beer is never short of flavour |
Boggart - Dren | 3.60 | | First one out for a while I guess so a bit cloying |
Belhaven - Caledonian Deuchars IPA | 3.80 | Not Tried
Rudgate - Ruby Mild | 4.40 | Not Tried
Moor - Old Freddy Walker | 7.30 | Not Tried
Summer Wine (SWB) - Resistance Dark Mild | 3.70 | Not Tried
By The Horns - Diamond Geezer | 4.90 | Not Tried
13 May 2012 (Philip Pirrip)
Late evening visit. By chance an occasional drinking partner was hiding in one of the dark corners! Otherwise only 2 or 3 other customers in situ.
Ramsbury - Flint Knapper | 4.20 | | Full flavoured mid to dark brown beer. One I have more often seen in Wetherspoon's. |
Otley - Croes-o | 4.20 | | An Otley limited edition brew. Very light colour and citrus tones. Totally flat to non-existent head. |
Moorhouse's - Black Cat Mild | 3.40 | Not Tried
Dark Star - Espresso Stout | 4.20 | Not Tried
