I moved here from the Chesham Arms as that pub had become overcrowded. Much quieter here, although the group of friends I joined in turn all departed for the Chesham. The cask beers seemed a little lacklustre tonight, and I learned they were the last from the cellar brewery. The pub is to be supplied in the future from the new Howling Hops facility at Hackney Wick. I did not note the other real ales available.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Howling Hops (Former brewery at Cock Tavern) - Black XX Superior No. 25.50ExcellentOn key-keg and easily the best condition of the three beers drank here tonight. A lovely, hoppy, Black IPA.
Howling Hops (Former brewery at Cock Tavern) - Oatmeal Stout4.60GoodSmooth and creamy, if a little warm.
Howling Hops (Former brewery at Cock Tavern) - English Light Ale4.50AcceptableTasted a bit lacking in some way today.

Central Hackney seems to be having a major sulk following the General Election outcome. There’s not many in here at lunchtime and it’s long faces all round. I hear that the new Howling Hops brewery in Hackney Wick is at last nearly in production.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Howling Hops (Former brewery at Cock Tavern) - Mild Ale - Single Hop Special (Mosaic)3.30ExcellentNot mild at all, and bursting with luscious Mosaic hop flavours.
Howling Hops (Former brewery at Cock Tavern) - Pacific Light Ale4.20GoodA bit challenging today in its pale hoppiness.

Early afternoon on a Sunday – always a good time to visit this pub when it is not too busy. The new manager treats us to a quick peak at the cellar brewery. There are a total of seven Howling Hops beers available from cask today, I did not note them all.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Howling Hops (Former brewery at Cock Tavern) - Black XX Superior No. 25.50ExcellentAn aggressive Black IPA featuring Cascade, Citra and Mosaic hops.
Howling Hops (Former brewery at Cock Tavern) - American Brown Ale4.00ExcellentBrown Ale with a high hop content (Cascade and Centennial).

Any plans for a more extensive pub-crawl were abandoned. This is a very difficult place to leave once settled. I made a new friend of the greyhound variety. A magnificent eight Howling Hops beers were available on cask, but crowding meant that I was not able to record all of their names.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Howling Hops (Former brewery at Cock Tavern) - Running Beer4.00ExceptionalAmber-coloured. Absolutely luscious hop tastes from Citra, Centennial and Columbus. My second five star beer of the evening.
Howling Hops (Former brewery at Cock Tavern) - Pale XX - Superior No. 55.00ExcellentAnother lovely, pale, hoppy beer. Features Citra, Cascade and Galaxy hops.
07 Nov 2014 (Stephen Harris)
Busy Friday evening session. Several more Howling Hops cask beers were available.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Howling Hops (Former brewery at Cock Tavern) - Mild Ale - Single Hop Special (Mosaic)3.30ExcellentVery lovely, dark, hoppy beer. Reinforcing my theory that the Mosaic hop works best in a dark beer.
Howling Hops (Former brewery at Cock Tavern) - Single Dubbel4.00GoodBrown coloured. Dry and fruity and a bit odd, but nice.
Orbit - Nico4.80GoodOn keg dispense and a bit fizzy. Golden and flavoursome beer – in a Kölsch style I think.

Early evening and not too busy here, with seating space available. I caught up on a lot of local pub and brewery news tonight, with some interesting new openings in the pipeline. A couple of additional beers were also available.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Howling Hops (Former brewery at Cock Tavern) - Chocolate Stout5.20ExcellentVery chocolaty, black stout. This cask indicated as being 5.5%.
Howling Hops (Former brewery at Cock Tavern) - Pale Ale No. 13.80GoodHazy golden. I didn’t see the small print on the pumpclip so am not sure of the hop mix in this one (Simcoe one of our group thought). Just a little bit think I thought.

Good to be back on familiar Hackney territory tonight after a few days exploring London’s nether regions, south of the River. Talking politics in here with Vincent over a beer and pork pie dinner.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Howling Hops (Former brewery at Cock Tavern) - Pale XX - Superior No. 65.00ExcellentGolden and bursting with hops. The mix here is Motueka and Cascade, which make a great combination.
Howling Hops (Former brewery at Cock Tavern) - Amber US Special5.00ExcellentA reddish-amber colour. Very well-hopped with Centennial and Cascade.
Howling Hops (Former brewery at Cock Tavern) - Summer Pale Ale4.00GoodGolden and hoppy (as expected here). Condition a little tired, and I noticed that the clip was turned around next time I was at the bar.

Early Sunday evening, with all the doors open to get a through flow of air on a hot day. Perhaps I’m just in a good mood, but the beer seems even better than usual here today.

The pub is found in Hackney, Greater London, E8 1EJ.

There was a pub called the Cock in Hackney village as early as the 1650s, and in 1661 it was the venue for ‘Popish Conspirators’, plotting an unsuccessful assassination attempt on King Charles II. Nobody is quite sure if this was the predecessor of today’s pub – but the present pub was certainly around by the 1830s and was rebuilt in its present form by Truman’s Brewery in around 1930. Very much a down-market, high street, strictly ‘no real ale’ sort of place, it closed in early 2012 for refurbishment, and re-opened on 18 July 2012 as a real ale champion, complete with in-house ‘Howling Hops’ micro-brewery (subsequently relocated to larger premises). This pub is sister pub to the Southampton Arms in Kentish Town.

We have visited this pub 124 times, seen 426 different beers and tried 269 of them.
