Late afternoon into early evening with after work crowds beginning to arrive.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Howling Hops (Brewed at Hackney Wick) - 1/2 IPA3.00ExcellentGreat low-strength/full-flavour beer that gives Redemption Trinity and Tap East Tonic Ale a run for their money.
Pig & Porter - Fatal Flaw American Amber4.50AcceptableI’ve had this beer tasting better to be honest.

Early evening. Two Crate Brewery / Howling Hops collaboration beers are being launched here tonight, so there are lots of familiar faces present.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Howling Hops (Brewed at Hackney Wick) - 1/2 IPA3.00ExcellentA collaboration beer with Crate Brewery – this one brewed at Howling Hops. Full flavoured but low strength. Very pale in colour.
Maregade - Green Hopped Pale 20164.30AcceptableCloudy, golden beer. Very sharp. I think it needs something to balance the fresh hops and make the beer more mellow.

It’s the monthly cheese night in here and the pub is crowded already when more pack in to watch the football at 8pm.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Maregade - Summer Fruit Brown4.20GoodReddish-brown and a bit odd. A malty Brown Ale with lots of fruit flavours.
One Mile End Brew Co. (formerly Mulligans at the White Hart and then WH Brew Pub) - Kumquat Session IPA3.90GoodPale gold in colour. Unexpectedly dry and a bit nutty rather than fruity.
Hawkshead - ITI (little NZPA)3.50AcceptableGreat hop flavours but tasting a little bit thin.

It became rather crowded in here. I was stood at the bar with a group of friends and acquaintances, most of whom were either coming from or going to the beer festival at the Snooty Fox (which I had forgotten all about).
BeerABVScoreNotes
Five Points - Hook Island Red6.00ExcellentI find it hard to ignore this lush, strong beer when it is on the bar and finished up for the evening with an enjoyable pint.
Howling Hops (Brewed at Hackney Wick) - Chocolate Stout4.80ExcellentThe only beer on in cask from the house brewery. Very chocolaty.
Redchurch - Tartelette4.50ExcellentOn keg dispense. At last, a classy sour beer – after a couple of days of disappointment. Delicate, citrus flavours.
Redchurch - Urban Farmhouse3.80AcceptableOn keg dispense. A cloudy, gold colour. A base, sour beer. Tastes like it is waiting for flavour to be added.

Unexpectedly rather busy in here in the mid-evening. Not much January abstinence in Hackney it seems.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Maregade - Blonde Pale4.80GoodA hazy, sharp, Pale Ale.
Maregade - Vanilla Milk Stout (keg)3.80GoodOn keg dispense. Thick and black, with a foamy head. Initially strong coffee flavour, then the vanilla kicks in. I’m not detecting much lactose sweetness.
Five Points - Hook Island Red6.00AcceptableI’m very ambivalent about anything ‘red’. If it has a strong hop flavour I usually love it, dominated by sweetness and I hate it. Usually love this one, but not tonight when the dominant flavour seemed to be caramel.

In here mid-afternoon on a Sunday for a pork pie lunch after an energetic day so far. Stunned to find that pork pies are no longer sold and that “we are investigating alternative catering options”. I’ll have to go hungry.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Howling Hops (Brewed at Hackney Wick) - Pale Ale No. 13.80ExcellentOn first class form.
Big Smoke - Mothership5.50AcceptableHazy dark amber. Unfined, robust, yeasty and bitter.

It’s a friend’s birthday and I’m in a group of more than 20 here. It is the first Thursday of the month which is ‘Holy Cheese Mountain’ night hereabouts, and copious amounts of cheese are consumed. I didn’t quite note all the cask beer names I don’t think.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Burning Sky - Saison à la Provision6.50ExcellentOn keg dispense. Golden. A very tart, fruity (grapes and gooseberries), sour sort of beer.
Maregade - Green Hop Pale4.80ExcellentAn unfiltered, golden beer with quite a pungent green hop character.
Pressure Drop - Wu Gang Chops – The Tree4.10GoodOn keg dispense. A very unusual, herbal Wheat Beer.
Howling Hops (Brewed at Hackney Wick) - Pale XX No. 15.00GoodNot quite as fresh-tasting from cask as it is served at the Tank Bar.

A low-key launch night tonight for Maregade, the new brewery which has set up in the cellar space here. The beer is excellent and proved very popular; 100 pints are sold on this first evening. I did not note all the cask beers that were available, on what proved to be a long session.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Maregade - Blonde Pale4.80ExcellentOn keg dispense. Light and fresh and hoppy.
Harbour - Session IPA4.30ExcellentJust right for a low-ish strength hophead.
Bad Seed - Raspberry Red4.30GoodRed in colour and very fruity.

Early evening. I made new a friend of the Greyhound variety – and it was a different one to a previous occasion in this dog-friendly pub.

The pub is found in Hackney, Greater London, E8 1EJ.

There was a pub called the Cock in Hackney village as early as the 1650s, and in 1661 it was the venue for ‘Popish Conspirators’, plotting an unsuccessful assassination attempt on King Charles II. Nobody is quite sure if this was the predecessor of today’s pub – but the present pub was certainly around by the 1830s and was rebuilt in its present form by Truman’s Brewery in around 1930. Very much a down-market, high street, strictly ‘no real ale’ sort of place, it closed in early 2012 for refurbishment, and re-opened on 18 July 2012 as a real ale champion, complete with in-house ‘Howling Hops’ micro-brewery (subsequently relocated to larger premises). This pub is sister pub to the Southampton Arms in Kentish Town.

We have visited this pub 124 times, seen 426 different beers and tried 269 of them.
