Gorgeous day so came here for a pint in the beer garden. I really like this pub, probably my favourite in Canterbury.
Surrey Hills - Hammer Mild | 3.80 | | Always pleased to see a mild on, and this one was very good. Very dark almost black with a nice roasted malt flavour. Good stuff. |
Shepherd Neame - Master Brew Bitter | 3.70 | Not Tried
Belhaven - Caledonian Deuchars IPA | 3.80 | Not Tried
Ringwood - Razorback | 3.80 | Not Tried

My train was delayed by an incident with a driver at Minster, so I had to go to the pub didn't I? Very good pub with good interesting beers.
Crouch Vale - Amarillo | 5.00 | | Peach/apricot aroma. Lovely condition, strong golden peachy beer that rather stunned me. |
Shepherd Neame - Master Brew Bitter | 3.70 | Not Tried
Belhaven - Caledonian Deuchars IPA | 3.80 | Not Tried

Pretty quiet lateish in the evening. I had a spare 10 minutes before my train left for Ashford.
Grand Union - Stout | 4.80 | | Enormously drinkable stout with a fair amount of powdery charcoal in it. |
Shepherd Neame - Master Brew Bitter | 3.70 | Not Tried
Belhaven - Caledonian Deuchars IPA | 3.80 | Not Tried

After finding that the New Inn and the Phoenix are closed on Saturday lunch times, we'd worked up a decent thirst by the time we got here. It wasn't very busy, a few people scattered around the bar.
Belhaven - Caledonian Deuchars IPA | 3.80 | | I like this beer. It has a refreshing feel. Malt in the mouth, but with a sharpness and a clean finish. |
Brakspear (at Marston's Wychwood) - Bitter | 3.40 | | Not sure about this one. A bit watery in the mouth and a strange aroma of rubber. |
Shepherd Neame - Master Brew Bitter | 3.70 | Not Tried

My first visit since smoking ban, and it is so much nicer. Still one of the best real ale pubs in Canterbury and one of the most likely wehre you will have something interesting.
Ramsgate Brewery (Gadds') - No. 7 | 3.80 | | Very acceptable, some caramel, some grassy hop, some hoppy zing on end. |
Ringwood - Razorback | 3.80 | | Very fruity malty best bitter. |
Shepherd Neame - Master Brew Bitter | 3.70 | Not Tried
Belhaven - Caledonian Deuchars IPA | 3.80 | Not Tried

Sat in the garden at the rear.
Black Sheep - Best Bitter | 3.80 | | One of my favourite session bitters. |

Like a felon returning to the scene of the crime, I decided to relive the Canterbury pub crawl of a week ago, this time with my wife in tow in case it all kicked off again later on. Debbie doesn't drink the ales so she gave her opinions on the pubs. We started at the Unicorn which she said was "good", fairly quiet Friday lunchtime, mainly middle-aged men sitting around the bar.
Belhaven - Caledonian Deuchars IPA | 3.80 | | The barrel went off as the barman was pouring my pint so I got the first out the new one. A bit hazy, golden with white bubbly head. Good sharp refreshing taste though. I could have had a few of these. |
Shepherd Neame - Master Brew Bitter | 3.70 | Not Tried
Badger (Hall & Woodhouse) - King & Barnes Sussex | 3.50 | Not Tried
Archers - Village | 3.60 | Not Tried
17 Mar 2007 (Brian)
Saturday lunchtime crowd, but not too busy. Comfortable, traditional looking pub.
Archers - Village | 3.60 | | Brown bitter with white head. I suppose there was some hop at the end and some caramel in the mouth, but it was pretty one dimensional. Over all a pint I would usually avoid. |

I had 10 minutes to spend before my train went from Canterbury West, so I thought I would pop in as the beer line up is normally pretty good. Some good beers on. Still a bit smokey for me, but there is now a non smoking area.
Hopdaemon - Golden Braid | 3.70 | | I haven't had this in a bit and had forgotten how good it was. Lots of hop and good pale malt base. But this is about the hop. |
Shepherd Neame - Master Brew Bitter | 3.70 | Not Tried
Belhaven - Caledonian Deuchars IPA | 3.80 | Not Tried
Ringwood - Razorback | 3.80 | Not Tried | If I had more time, I would have tried it. |

Got off the train in Canterbury and headed straight for the pub. It was fairly busy as I recall
Belhaven - Caledonian Deuchars IPA | 3.80 | | Yep, I have a slight memory of this being quite acceptable |
Shepherd Neame - Master Brew Bitter | 3.70 | Not Tried
