28 Nov 2013 (McGargle)
Busy but good service. Three pumps taken over by cider plus two duplicates.
BeerABVScoreNotes
North Yorkshire - Flying Herbert4.80GoodEnjoyed this (too) many years ago in The Tap and Barrel, Middlesbrough. This wasn't the same beer. More floral (Parma Violets) and spicy but still perfectly enjoyable.
21 Nov 2013 (McGargle)
Usual quick service.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Adnams - Pretty Things Jack D'Or Saison Americaine6.00GoodWell constructed but could be bolder.
Swannay (formerly Highland) - Scapa Special4.20AcceptableThin, grainy, limited hopping.
13 Nov 2013 (Ray)
Quite busy. Chicken Piri Piri skewers were dry, tough and tasteless.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Adnams - Pretty Things Jack D'Or Saison Americaine6.00GoodAnother brave beer from Wetherspoons and Adnams. No, it isn't as good as Dupont or Silly but they're towards the top of the class. This was very good; plenty of farmyard and an interesting malt body.
31 Oct 2013 (McGargle)
Still plenty of festival ales.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Rooster's - All Star4.30AcceptableMuted. With the hops used this should have shone. Instead it skulked in the glass.
26 Oct 2013 (McGargle)
Very Busy with football fans and students.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Evan Evans - Organic Gold4.20GoodSurprisingly fresh tasting for Evan Evans. Reasonable body and some foreign hops could be discerned.
24 Oct 2013 (Ray)
Busy but fast service.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Thwaites - Elysian Avatar Jasmine IPA6.30GoodStrong lightly scented US style beer. Excellent supple malt body and just enough from the hops to demand a second.
JW Lees (see also Lees) - Cora3.90AcceptableAnother bitter.
22 Oct 2013 (Ray)
Getting busier. Good quick service.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Wadworth - Abita Brewing Restoration Pale Ale5.20PoorDull.
17 Oct 2013 (Ray)
Good selection of Festival beers. Harpoon ran out as I was being served.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Butcombe - Haka4.50GoodSurprisingly pleased with this mid-brown ale. Good smooth malts and enough hop presence to demand another pint.
Caledonian - Ninkasi Cream Ale4.50AcceptableFirst time I've knowingly tried a cream ale. It certainly was pale and creamy with limited input from malt or hops. Slight catch on the finish marks it down.
03 Oct 2013 (McGargle)
Busy for curry night. Disappointing choice of beers.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Thwaites - Crafty Devil4.30PoorDarkish brown bitter with an unusual spicy/medicinal hit. Not too pleasant. Nearly rated as 3* but realised we'd moved on because there was nothing better. 2* it is then.
19 Sep 2013 (McGargle)
Busy but staff well on top of the job.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Adnams - Sixpoint Bengali (previously Bengali Tiger)6.40ExcellentNot a hop bomb but a deeply flavoured and well balanced old(er) style IPA.
Wadworth - Sunset Red5.00AcceptablePerfectly drinkable but no great character.
