Visits Details

12 Sep 2013 (McGargle)
Quite busy - mostly drinkers. Mostly Scottish guests.
BeerABVScoreNotes
B&T (Banks & Taylor's) - Golden Fox4.10AcceptableNondescript golden ale.
15 Aug 2013 (Ray)
Curry night - still excellent value.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Vale - Gravitas4.80AcceptableUninspiring premium bitter.
12 Aug 2013 (Ray)
Another quiet one.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Brewster's - Calamity Jane4.80GoodEasy drinking dark golden ale.
07 Aug 2013 (Ray)
Really struggling to maintain beer quality.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Phoenix - Navvy3.80PoorMore cardboard than beer but suspect this is more about the serve than the brew.
24 Jul 2013 (Ray)
Seemed quiet. Too many pumps taken up with cider.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Cairngorm - Highland IPA5.00PoorThis how it's described: "The larger than life Highland IPA, an IPA with a massive American influence. Powerful Amarillo bitterness exploding with late citrus flavours from Centennial hops and grapefruit from Perle hops." The reality is rather different. Dominated by caramel/buttertscotch which could be smelled from feet away this beer was characterised by an almost complete absence of hops. Citrus? Grapefruit? Wishful thinking.
Greene King - Yardbird4.00UndrinkableVinegar.
19 Jun 2013 (McGargle)
Fast service. Mostly regulars.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Mauldons - Cuckoo Bitter4.30AcceptableLight golden ale but no real character.
Oakham - JHB3.80PoorWhat have they done to this? Watery and lacking hops. Not JHB at all.
13 Jun 2013 (McGargle)
Fast friendly service - shame the beer wasn't of a similar standard.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Freeminer - Iron Brew4.20AcceptableDon't think this was a honey beer but the flavour was there.
Belhaven - Caledonian Deuchars IPA3.80PoorHints of fly spray. Left 1/2.
RCH - Double Header5.30PoorDevoid of any real character. Only now realised it's strength.
Hop Union (formerly Great Western (GWB)) - Meerkat Mild3.90PoorLacking in virtually everything. Body, flavour, aroma. Not a serve problem.
Cairngorm - Caillie3.80PoorPlenty of caramel but where were the new world hops? Missing!
30 May 2013 (McGargle)
Good to see a range of more modern style beers.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Purity - Mad Goose4.20GoodCrisp and clean; a solid bitter.
Sadler's (see also Windsor Castle entry) - Hop Bomb5.00GoodHop forward 4* beer served a touch too warm.
Thwaites - Wainwright (please now use the Banks's entry)4.10Not Tried
23 May 2013 (McGargle)
Good service.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Nethergate (was Nethergate Growler for a while then name reverted) - Mary's Ruby Mild4.50AcceptableNot really a mild but a malty bitter.
Black Wolf (formerly Traditional Scottish Ales (TSA)) - Ben Nevis 80/4.00UndrinkableBrown vinegar. Staff to be commended for quickly taking it 'off' but don't they have someone to taste beers during the day?
09 May 2013 (McGargle)
Friendly service.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Lymestone - Pounamu4.20AcceptableDry and grainy, some limited hopping.
