13 Feb 2014 (McGargle)
Curry night.
Broughton - No. 5 Proper IPA | 5.00 | | Surprised but this was a proper IPA. Excellent body, plenty of biting (UK) hoppy/spicy bitterness and served crystal clear. |
Black Wolf (formerly Traditional Scottish Ales (TSA)) - Glencoe Wild Oat Stout | 4.50 | | Good tan head, some body, plenty of roasty flavours but something a little 'chemically' on the finish. |
Lancaster - Black | 4.50 | | Thin. |
11 Feb 2014 (McGargle)
Draughty and no one knew how to shut the window.
Banks's - Three Weavers / Golden Road California Session IPA | 4.80 | | Less crisp and hoppy than previously. Was this the same cask on a different pump or a new cask? |
Oakham - JHB | 3.80 | | Muted. |
06 Feb 2014 (McGargle)
Mostly students in the Family Area and chaps, of a certain age, in the bar.
Banks's - Three Weavers / Golden Road California Session IPA | 4.80 | | Terrific pale ale bursting with grapefruit and other citrus hops. Excellent condition. Banks's can brew fine beer when they want. |
Oakham - JHB | 3.80 | Not Tried | |
30 Jan 2014 (McGargle)
Busy. Quick service. Good to see the Manager pitching in and collecting glasses.
Wadworth - Bale Breaker Field 41 Pale Ale | 4.80 | | So Wadworth's can brew. This was a good APA; plenty of hops, no yeasty rasp and solidly bitter. Maybe 4* really. |
23 Jan 2014 (McGargle)
Busy enough but could still find a seat.
Adnams - Stone Brewing Double IPA | 8.50 | | Alcohol well masked by malty sweetness and a dry, bitter finish. Hopping could have been more assertive. Bit of a disappointment. |
16 Jan 2014 (McGargle)
Curry night and pretty busy. Bottle drop still an unwelcome chorus.
Titanic - Full Steam Ahead | 4.40 | | Good fruity beer. Some dryness on the finish demanded a second pint. |
Wibblers - Dengie Dark | 3.80 | | There was very good beer struggling to be seen. Couldn't work out if this example was green or on the turn. Suspect the latter. |
09 Jan 2014 (McGargle)
Quick and friendly service.
Butcombe - Matthew Pale Ale | 3.80 | | A good pale ale with some hop interest. |
07 Jan 2014 (McGargle)
How to lose trade: place the bottle collecting bins by the public areas. Everytime, and it happens a lot, that a bottle is dropped in the bin there's a loud crash. People are startled, any atmosphere is lost. Manager didn't seem too concerned. Crazy.
Thornbridge / Thornbridge Hall - Jaipur | 5.90 | | More rounded than I'd come to expect with slight sweeteness from the malts and subdued hopping. Never thought of Jaipur as a session beer but this was close. Session at 5.9%? |
Adnams - Sixpoint Righteous Ale | 6.30 | | This didn't work for me. An overly sweet winter warmer with spice and an unpleasant hop bite. |
18 Dec 2013 (McGargle)
Surprisingly quiet.
Green Jack - Red Robin | 3.80 | | Was warned it was an 'unusual' red colour; wasn't warned it had turned. |
09 Dec 2013 (McGargle)
Quiet tonight but on a Monday in early December could we expect more? Impressed by the enthusiasm of the staff who clearly knew their ales.
Everards (see entries against Joule's & Robinsons whilst its new brewery was being built) - Devils Backbone India Pale Ale | 5.90 | | Astonished that Everards could brew this hop monster. Stuffed with Columbus, Centenial and Simcoe. 5* perhaps. Well done Everards. |
Oakham - JHB | 3.80 | | Muted. Where was the dry hoppiness? |
