1955 hours visit - my first since the extension was opened. The extension drinking area is very much in keeping and from an exterior point of view the extension has pretty much fully blended in seamlessly. The wooden decked partly covered lean-to outside area seems half inside and half out and was equipped with ashtrays - I had forgotten all about pub ashtrays which makes it an area to avoid.
Revolutions - Le Freak | 4.50 | | An OK pale / golden ale |
York (now brewed by and at Black Sheep) - Guzzler | 3.60 | Not Tried
Rooster's - Yankee | 4.30 | Not Tried

27 May 2012 (Martin the Mildman)
Not too busy late afternoon on a Sunday - I actually got a seat.
Summer Wine (SWB) - Mokko Sweet Milk Stout | 6.00 | | Last beer of the day so took my time over this one. Silky smooth with sweetness from chocolate and toffee malt flavours. Very rich and full bodied leaving a lingering sweet malty aftertaste. My score 18/20. |
17 May 2012 (ChrisE)
Lunchtime. Scaffolding and building works outside the pub, it looks as though they are extending the place.
Milestone - St George's Legend | 4.00
York (now brewed by and at Black Sheep) - Guzzler | 3.60 | Not Tried
Boggart - Dark Mild | 4.00 | Not Tried

26 Apr 2012 (Philip Pirrip)
Visit 2105 hours. Reasonable footfall for a heavy drizzled evening. I affectionately call this The VD House owing to the related small enamel signs on the bar pillars. Overheard what sounded like plans to extend and change the interior.
Goose Eye - St George English Pride | 4.20 | | Full bodied but the "old usual" citrus taste |
Rooster's - YPA (Yorkshire Pale Ale) | 4.10 | Not Tried
York (now brewed by and at Black Sheep) - Guzzler | 3.60 | Not Tried
Titanic - English Glory | 4.50 | Not Tried
Black Sheep - Best Bitter | 3.80 | Not Tried | Always on tap here |
Rooster's - Londinium (Taylors of Harrogate Traditional Coffee Porter) | 5.50 | Not Tried | Quite what the link is between Yorkshire and "The Smoke" I do not know |
17 Sep 2011 (Martin the Mildman)
Standing room only as ever on a Saturday afternoon in this very popular York institution.
Rooster's - Last Stand | 4.30 | | Pale, hoppy and dry in true fashion. Not entirely to my taste but a good beer all the same. My score 14/20. |
17 Jun 2011 (Flying.geordie)
Warwickshire - Market Ale | 4.90
Kirkstall - Three Swords | 4.50
Spitting Feathers - Dark Velvet | 4.00
04 Oct 2010 (Martin the Mildman)
18th anniversary beer festival in progress.
Prior's Well - Silver Chalice | 4.10 | | Very pale ale with excellent citrus hop character and a dry, hoppy finish. My score 15/20. |
Bird Brain - Penguin | 3.60 | | A malty, roasty but low hopped black mild. Quite a dry, roasty finish. My score 15/20. |
Copthorne - Gold | 3.60 | | So pale that it's not really gold at all. Dry, citrus hop flavour dominates right through to the finish. My score 14/20. |
Old Bear - Spectacled Bear | 4.30 | | Strong caramel flavour with a rather cloying sweetness and a hint of diacetyl. Not very well balanced with a dry finish. My score 14/20. |
Leadmill - Splash & Dash | 4.20 | | Very pale with dry hop bitterness and a very dry, astringent finish. My score 14/20. |
Globe - Vulcan | 4.50 | | Golden bitter with a very bitter, phenolic taste. Definitely not to my taste. My score 9/20. |
23 May 2010 (Martin the Mildman)
Always flies the flag for Mild in May.
Joseph Holt (see also Holt's) - Mild | 3.20 | | Unusual to find this away from the tied estate, but in much better condition here than most tied pubs! The malt really comes through in this sample with caramel and liquorice flavours and the characteristic dry finish. My score 16/20. |
