30 Nov 2014 (Stephen Harris)
Late-afternoon visit. In my experience this pub is always busy, but not today. Could it be anything to do with the fact that Sunday roast dinner weighed in at £16?
St Austell - Saint Nich's Festive Ale | 4.50 | | Chestnut-coloured. Rich fruit and spice, the latter not overdone. Tasting notes mention marmalade, and they’re right. |
Eagle (formerly Wells & Young's, formerly Charles Wells, formerly Wells) - Bombardier (was Bombardier Glorious English) (use Eagle entry now please) | 4.10 | Not Tried
St Austell - Nicholson's Pale Ale | 4.00 | Not Tried
Big Penny (formerly Truman's) as of late 2022 contract brewed - Runner | 4.00 | Not Tried
11 Dec 2012 (Martin the Mildman)
Busy but got a table in the corner of the bar.
Nethergate (was Nethergate Growler for a while then name reverted) - Petersfield Porter | 5.00 | | Black porter with a sweetish malty character. Some fruit in the finish. My score 16/20. |
Broughton - SOS - Santa's Oatmeal Stout | 4.80 | | Black malty stout with a full bodied roast malt flavour. Some hints of fruit in the finish. My score 16/20. |
10 Nov 2012 (Martin the Mildman)
Nethergate (was Nethergate Growler for a while then name reverted) - Lamplighter Amber Beer (exclusively for Nicholson's) | 4.80 | | More of a ruby colour, a dark bitter with a bitter malty flaovur but little hop character. Dry, astringent finish. My score 13/20. |
23 Jun 2012 (Martin the Mildman)
Got a seat so not too busy late on a Saturday afternoon.
Thwaites - Sunshine & Lollihops | 4.60 | | Actually 4.6%. Well balanced pale strong bitter. My score 15/20. |
31 Dec 2011 (Martin the Mildman)
My last pub visit of 2011.
Moor - Amoor | 4.50 | | Formerly named Peat Porter. Quite a lot of bitter flavours in this from both roast malt and hops. The finish is quite dry. My score 15/20. |
06 Sep 2011 (Martin the Mildman)
Unusually quiet on a Tuesday evening.
Leeds - Monsoon | 4.80 | | Now beefed up with a higher ABV, this is an IPA style beer with a high malt and hop flavour, toffee malt competing against bitter hop for dominance. The finish is quite dry. My score 15/20. |
Brentwood - Pacific Pale Ale | 4.70 | | Unfortunately past its best here, was probably a good hoppy beer in its prime. My score 9/20 with C for quality. |
14 Jun 2011 (Martin the Mildman)
Moor - Northern Star | 4.10 | | Pale bitter brewed solely with citra hops. Little in the way of malt backup, so a very sharp, bitter citrus hop flavour. My score 14/20. |
09 Jan 2011 (Martin the Mildman)
Very quiet early doors on a Sunday lunchtime. Had a roast lunch in here which was quite acceptable.
Adnams - Old Ale | 4.10 | | Very pleasant smooth and well rounded mild style ale with toffee malt and some fruitiness present. My score 16/20. |
14 Dec 2010 (Martin the Mildman)
Sharp's - Cornish Stout | 4.30 | | Very dark ruby/black stout with good bitter roast malt flavour and a little hoppiness to give a dry finish. My score 16/20. |
