03 Jan 2026 (Hogan Sampling)
2nd visit of the outing: Mid-afternoon and filling up. Prompt, friendly service at the bar. A very smoky atmosphere when we walked in as a log fire down one end of this old pub was taking hold. A lot of noise emanating from someone filling party balloons for a party down the far end which had not yet started. Sounded like someone drilling or a hand dryer constantly being activated to fill these balloons. It was a marked contrast with the tranquillity of the Royal Oak. Three cask on and in CAMRA'S Good Beer Guide. We found a table sufficiently far away from the smoky fire and balloon-filling. It was here we were joined by the fourth member of our party on this outing.

A hoppy, fruited first hit. A dry bitterness rising. A hoppy note winning over aided by its Kentish hops: First Gold, Golding and Challenger. Hints of mild toffee from its maltiness paddling out. |
