Early afternoon on a mild post Christmas Saturday.Pleasantly busy with drinkers and lunchers. We spoke with an American lady who was pleasantly surprised that dogs were made welcome.Apparently this custom does not apply in the US of A.

Mid afternoon our group arrived just as another were leaving, so propped the bar up and were entertained by the enthusiastic Geordie barman who realted to many of the pubs we'd visited in his home area.

My first visit to this lovely little pub for a very long time. Pleasant and quiet in the afternoon after I had made a hospital visit in the town.

We arrived 10 minutes before it opened so we sat outside the nearby castle and watched people take pictures of cannon. By the time we'd lost interest in that and wandered back to the pub it was already filling up. Popular.

Found near the battlements facing out to sea this is a pretty little pub. Known locally as "The Wipers". Atmospheric location particularly at night. One large bar with facilities for dining towards the rear. Long associated with Whitbread being on one of its famous aluminium inn signs cards and once displayed the various inn signs maps on the wall. Has 6 handpumps on the bar counter. Regular live music played here. Outside drinking areas including some on the ramparts out the front.

We have visited this pub 14 times, seen 36 different beers and tried 19 of them.
