Mid Wednesday afternoon on the opening day and there was a rather nice sedate atmosphere. Clientele were older males from CAMRA. It rained but I got a seat inside and drank a whole variety of styles of beer.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Oakham - White Dwarf4.30ExcellentVery good condition, tad farty on aroma.
Thornbridge / Thornbridge Hall - Jaipur5.90ExcellentGrapefruit is piercing. Full in body. Hoppy grapefruit is stunning.
Eastwood & Sanders - 1872 Porter6.50ExcellentStill a brilliant porter, bit more burnt maybe than usual, but still stunning.
Dark Star - Hophead (some has also been brewed by Fuller's)3.80GoodGood, but lacked intensity
Newmans - Cave Bear Stout4.00GoodBlack with brown edges, lasting dark beige head. Lots of choc, some liquorice on aroma. Very choccy in mouth, bit of smoke. Some bitter choc later on. Some blackberry fruit. Finish is more juicy than dry. Decent choccy stout.
Oakleaf (now see Fallen Acorn entries) - I Can't Believe It's Not Bitter4.20GoodClear gold, bubbly white lasting head. Yes it has got lager malt, but the hops are excelllent. Decent citrus hops all over it. The finish in particular is reminiscent of a bitter. Ditto the mouthfeel. More of a golden beer than a lager.
Twickenham (also uses sub-brand Old Hands) - Daisy Cutter6.10GoodI missed out on this at Reading so decided to have it here. Gold with slight haze, very thin white head. Slight fart, overridden by hop on aroma. Very decent in mouth, good sherberty US hop. Doesn’t drink it’s strength. Good hop finish. Very citrusy. Not a bad beer, needs a bit more body.
Pictish - Black Diamond MIld3.50AcceptableVery dark ruby with thin beige head. Some choc/coffee in mouth. Good tasting in mouth. Finish has some choc/charcoal and a bit of spicyness. Decent mild, though aroma is poor. Middle and end are good. I keep having Pictish beers as Gazza Prescott swears by them.
Eastwood & Sanders - IPA6.50AcceptableGold/orange with a few off white bubbles on top. Diacetyl/butter and strong flowery hop aroma. Ever so syrupy in mouth. Buttery toffee and lots of grapefruit. Not entirely sure it works. Grapefruit bite on finish is good. Some strawberry. Strong and syrupy, but with plenty of bitter hop on finish. It’s alright, but that may be the alcohol speaking.
Castle Rock - Large One4.40PoorAmber, bubbly off white head. Bit of diacetyl aroma. It’s an alright bitter, but the buttery diacetyl ruins it.
