4th visit of the outing: Not for those who find seven, no less, steep steps to climb to get into the place a challenge. There appears to be no disabled access into this Shepherd Neame House in Hastings’ Old Town’s All Saints’ Street as built long before such considerations came about. Its rear expansive garden is also steep with steps up to a series of seating levels. I sat out in the garden on its furthest and highest level for a while to enjoy my half as the party I arrived with preferred to sit in the somewhat narrow compact inside. I timed it well to meet back inside before the next pub on their list in the Old Town. Prompt, attentive service on arrival mid-afternoon.

| Shepherd Neame - Spitfire (or Spitfire Amber Ale) | 4.20 | | Came with lasting head and lacing on this deep copper-coloured amber ale first brewed in 1990 by Shepherd Neame Brewery located in Faversham, Kent, to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Battle of Britain, which was fought in the skies directly above the brewery's home county. Shepherd Neame itself was founded in 1698 making it Britain’s oldest continuous commercial brewer. A dry bitter first hit. A hoppy spicy fruitiness rising from its 100% Kentish hops using a three-hop blend of Target, First Gold and East Kent Goldings. Hints of malty sweetness from its crystal malt and featuring bready caramel, sweet biscuits and toffee from locally-sourced ale malts. A dry fruit-infused bitterness with bitter orange marmalade and red grapes sailing out on my palate. Served with healthy conditioning. |

#5 heritage pub. Fairly busy with people trying to eat. Took ages to get an expensive half of Spitfire. Indifferent young bar staff, off-putting blackboard in the terraced garden listing 5 rules including “please keep dogs on a lead and preferably children as well”. Shepherd Neame house. Only endearing thing for me was the mummified cat and rat in a picture frame above some unaware diners.

This old gem of a pub was back in the Old Town of Hastings and in All Saints Street which runs parallel with the High Street of the Old Town. I stayed in a B&B some 30 odd years ago in All Saints Street but cannot recall much about The Stag Inn. It is suitably olde worlde in appearance in one of the many old cottage-style buildings of All Saints Street. CAMRA alleges it is probably the oldest surviving pub in Hastings that has not been rebuilt on the site of a former pub and dates from 1547. Predates wheelchair access and the rear garden is on a sharp gradient of a hill and so also requires much climbing over sizeable steps. Not overly busy in the least for my late afternoon arrival and prompt friendly service for a choice of two real ales from Shepherd Neame in Faversham and which also runs it as noted from the pub's hanging sign. Climbed up to the furthest and highest level in the garden and not a soul out there and so very peaceful it was. It is rated by CAMRA as having a two-star interior of very special national historic interest.

For such low gravity, it certainly was punching above. Presented with very good head and lacing and lasted throughout. A lightly fruited first bite. A fruity bitterness rising up. A dry bitter hoppiness bobbing up and down before sailing off into its sunset. It has been brewed to mark the 85th anniversary of Operation Dynamo, the Dunkirk evacuation, and commemorated on 26th May 2025, when a flotilla of Dunkirk "little ships" sailed from Ramsgate to Dunkirk to mirror the original evacuation route. |

Pub no. 4. Large front room. Very friendly. A lot of folk musicians came in and played their stuff.
