Late afternoon fairly quiet inside however the outside seating area was busy with folk enjoying the late yet still warming sun. Just the one choice from 'Youngs' vast portfolio today.
Banks's - Young's London Original | 3.70 | | Slightly hazy yet tasted and smelt fine. |

No doubting it being a giant of a pub and first licensed in 1856 and rebuilt in 1868. It was clearly purpose-built as such. Got its name from the Elgin family and one of whom made their fame with the Elgin Marbles, the Ancient Greek sculptures from the Parthenon and from the Acropolis of Athens, and now in the British Museum. Grade two-listed, it is indeed palatial and on the inside with stained-glass predominating the fabric of the petitions between at least three separate drinking areas. Apart from the Elgin marbles' family connection, it was also noted for being a horse-bus depot catering for both the horses and passengers as you would expect, and in the 1950s known for being a Teddy Boy hangout and in the 70s as a rock venue. Busy it most certainly was on my early evening visit but prompt and friendly service provided and no, the currency was not marbles but to my delight cash! On leaving, I found a part of the pub apparently closed off and which I wanted to take a few snaps of, especially around the real open fireplace that was glowing. The bar-staff obliged by letting me in to that bit on explaining.
Dark Star - Hophead (was 3.8%) brewed by Fuller's | 3.40 | | Good head and lacing. A dry and fruity first hit. A mildly fruity and dry hoppy mouthfeel and lingering in the aftertaste. |
St Austell - Proper Job | 4.50 | Not Tried
Banks's - Young's London Original | 3.70 | Not Tried

Fairly busy for a mid afternoon yet despite this a quiet calm and relaxed atmosphere with no noisy folk and soft background music made for a pleasant stay.
Eagle (formerly Wells & Young's, formerly Charles Wells, formerly Wells) - Drop Gold | 4.20 | | More malts than hops with just a hint of toffee. |
Banks's - Young's London Original (was Bitter) - previously brewed in Bedford and at Wychwood | 3.70 | Not Tried

Mid afternoon busy yet comfortable relaxed and welcoming to enjoy my pint after managing to dodge the frequent rain showers today..
St Austell - Proper Job | 4.50 | | Beer quality varies considerably here, I was fortunate to pick a day when it was excellent. |
Eagle (formerly Wells & Young's, formerly Charles Wells, formerly Wells) - Young's London Special (was Special) | 4.50 | | Bears no resemblance to its Young's origins. A once respected brand that should be resigned to the history books IMO. |
Banks's - Young's London Original (was Bitter) - previously brewed in Bedford and at Wychwood | 3.70 | Not Tried

Late afternoon quiet and relaxed atmosphere to enjoy one's pint compared to the hubbub of traffic and folk outside. Cracking pub spoilt by the unexciting and predictable beer range.

Mid evening fairly busy, no drinking at the bar thus allocated a free table by the attentive staff on entrance duty.
Banks's - Young's London Original (was Bitter) - previously brewed in Bedford and at Wychwood | 3.70 | | Nigh on faultless which was a pleasant surprise, I forced myself to have another just to make sure. |
St Austell - Proper Job | 4.50 | Not Tried | Alas I couldn't try this as pipe cleaning was in progress |

Mid evening busy inside in this superb preserved gem of a boozer. Shame about the beer range on tonight.
Banks's - Young's London Original (was Bitter) - previously brewed in Bedford and at Wychwood | 3.70 | | Oh dear. Tired hazy and slightly sour. Drinkable just about. |
Sharp's - Doom Bar | 4.00 | Not Tried | Wow this found it's way to London? Naah I must need to visit my opticians soon I think... |

Mid afternoon and busy in the main bar but quieter in the Elgin bar where I found myself. I liked the atmosphere here despite the recent refurb.
Twickenham (also uses sub-brand Old Hands) - Grandstand Bitter | 3.80 | | The barman warned me this has been cloudy so offered to pull a few through thence a taster which was fine and soon cleared. I asked if a sparkler was fitted alas he knew not of such devices. |
Sharp's - Doom Bar | 4.00 | Not Tried | Regular scribes can only imagine how tempted I was. |
