Tasting Summary

These comments are the opinion of the individual reviewer and represent what they thought of the beer on a particular day in a particular pub. If a review is less favourable, it may be because the beer suffered somewhere in the supply chain between them and the brewery.

Hogan SamplingAcceptable23 Jul 2026 2nd beer of this visit: Now its sixth or seventh day on and this Tunbridge Wells Kentish stout came with very minimal head and lacing and not lasting. A malty first hit. A chocolatey maltiness with a touch of coffee flavouring from its dark malts and oatmeal stout porridge oats. Its American Willamette hops aiding its hedgerow fruit flavours. My taste buddies taking an elderberry and blackcurrant hit. A hoppy maltiness combined with a dry bitterness sliding downwards. Flat tasting with little conditioning but washed it down with a small portion of chocolate cake I had wrapped in foil to bring along purposely.
Philip PirripAcceptable21 Jul 2026 Flavoursome but little condition
Hogan SamplingAcceptable21 Jul 2026 2nd beer of this visit: Now its fourth or fifth day on and this Tunbridge Wells stout came with some head and lacing to begin with but not lasting. A dry bitter first bite. Its blend of dark malts and oatmeal stout porridge oats lending a chocolatey maltiness with hints of coffee emerging. Hedgerow fruits with elderberry and blackcurrant hitting my taste buds from its American Willamette hops, a classic aroma hop. A hoppy bitterness mixed with a dry hop-infused maltiness paddling out. Little conditioning now and rather flat tasting.
Philip PirripAcceptable19 Jul 2026 Initial promise soon dissipated as went flat in the glass
Hogan SamplingGood19 Jul 2026 2nd beer of this visit: Now its second or third day on and this Tunbridge Wells stout still presented a good head and lacing but not lasting. A dry bitter first bite. A mildly chocolatey roasted maltiness rising with hints of coffee emanating from its blend of dark malts and oatmeal stout porridge oats. Its American Willamette hops, a classic aroma hop, behind its hedgerow fruits with elderberry and blackcurrant entertaining my taste buds. A dry hop-infused maltiness prevailing with a hoppy herbal bitterness sailing out. Served well but not hanging onto its conditioning as it did the day before.
Hogan SamplingExcellent18 Jul 2026 2nd beer of this visit: Either its first or second day on for this Kentish stout from Tunbridge Wells and poured with good head and lacing and lasting but a thinner mouthfeel than your average stout for me. Its brewing origins go back to a 10-barrel plant in 2013 and still there at High Brooms, just north of Tunbridge Wells itself. A dry hoppy first hit. A fruity maltiness rising up with flavours of chocolate and coffee from its blend of dark malts combined with oatmeal stout porridge oats lending a roastiness on my taste buddies. A hoppy note joining in for good measure from its American Willamette hops, a classic aroma hop, aiding its berry-fruit flavours such as elderberry and blackcurrant alongside subtle herbal hints among its hedgerow fruits. A dry hop-infused maltiness prevailing with a hoppy bitterness sailing out. Served in good nick despite offering a somewhat thin mouthfeel.

Philip PirripGood12 Apr 2026 Bulk standard stout. Drank without much noticing
Hogan SamplingGood12 Apr 2026 2nd beer of this visit: Second day on and this Tunbridge Wells-brewed stout pouring a ruby brown and coming with a good head and lacing but not really lasting. A malty first hit aided by its malts including Maris Otter, Roasted Barley and Chocolate. A rising bitterness from its exclusively Willamette hops, named after the Willamette Valley in northwest Oregon, and bred as a high-yield American alternative to the classic English Fuggle hop. A chocolate-infused malty note winning over. A dry bitterness slithering downwards with just the merest of chocolatey notes joining in. Greatly more quaffable than the Oakham and Hook Norton collaboration, Hooked Up.
Hogan SamplingGood11 Apr 2026 2nd beer of this visit: Fresh on was this Tunbridge Wells microbrewery’s* Kentish stout with good head and lacing to start with but not lasting all the way. A dry bitter but chocolatey first hit. A maltiness rising with just the merest hint of coffee but certainly not malty-sweet from its mix of Maris Otter, Roasted Barley, Chocolate malt, Flaked Barley, Oats, Crystal, Caragold, and Black malt. A healthy bitterness coming to the fore with subtle notes of elderberry, blackcurrant and hedgerow fruits aided by its Willamette hops**. Not a substantial mouthfeel by any means with just the faintest of chocolatey flavouring prevailing in its outflow of bitterness heading downwards. Perhaps still a touch too fresh for its head and lacing to have vanished soon after being poured on its first day on and in being rather thin-tasting. *Pig and Porter has been brewing on their own 10-barrel plant since 2013. **This is a classic American aroma hop that was released in 1971 by the United States Department of Agriculture's breeding program in Oregon. It was specifically developed as a high-yielding, American-grown alternative to the traditional English Fuggle hop.

Hogan SamplingGood07 Sep 2025 Also fresh on was this Tunbridge Wells' stout and head and lacing to start with but not managing to hold onto it. A dry smoky first bite. A good chocolatey maltiness rising from its depths and a moreishly dry bitterness from its US Willamette hops, derived from English Fuggle hops and noted for their woody incense and red berry hints, winning over and playing out.

Hogan SamplingGood17 Nov 2024 Good head and lacing. A smokey flavour with a dry, moreish mouthfeel. One half of it quickly became a pint on first sipping it.
