Beer | ABV | Score | Notes |
---|---|---|---|
Oakham - White Dwarf | 4.30 | Like the previous day, I started and finished with this and was for me the beer of the festival. | |
Dent - T'Owd Tup | 6.00 | Very dark ruby colour with disappearing beige head. Tarry blackcurrant is intense. Chewy in mouth, verges on tarry molasses, but the fruit keeps it in check. Great integrated alcohol, gives body without dominating. Fruit and dates and blackberry are very good. Oddly refreshing. | |
Batham - Mild Ale | 3.50 | Ruby colour with bubbly beige head. Odd smokey aroma. Some yeast. Has some very light caramel malt. It is extremely mild, but not poor because of that. Good example of the style. Malts are decent. | |
Naylor's - Gonzo's Porter | 5.50 | Black colour with ruby edges, no head. Reasonable porter with good intense choc finish. Smooth like very fine silk in the mouth. I think it's fantastic. | |
Goddards - Fuggle (or Fuggle Dee-Dum) | 4.80 | Hazy amber colour with no head. Plenty of English hops. Some fruity malt. Good fuggles hop throughout. Citrus and floral and aromatic. I rather like it, touch of ginger to the biscuity malt. Well made very English beer. | |
Frog Island - Fire Bellied Toad | 5.00 | Orange/gold colour with disappearing beige head. Citrus orange/tangerine aroma, like Robinson's tangerine jelly. Little bit gingery in mouth, more tangering on end. Rather a drinkable orangey strong citrus beer. | |
B&T (Banks & Taylor's) - Shefford Dark Mild | 3.80 | Brownish colour with no head. Malts are excellent. Brilliant mild. Lots of roasted flavours, grainy but not powdery. Great, great mild. Finish is just so roasty and gorgeous. | |
Fuller's (part of Asahi Europe) - IPA | 4.80 | Clear amber colour with thin off white head. Some biscuity malt, some raspberry fruit. Plenty of earthy citrus hop on finish. Good astringency. It's not at all bad. Very English, biscuity/toffee malt and good floral earthy citrus hop. EKG on aroma. | |
Potbelly - Pigs Do Fly! | 4.40 | Golden beer with thin lasting off white head. Grassy grapefruit hop aroma. Good subtle astringency. Good drinkable golden beer. Nice grassy hop finish, easy drinking. | |
Woodforde's - Norfolk Nog | 4.60 | Very dark black/ruby colour with thin beige head. Liquorice and dark malt aroma. Some sour brambley dark fruit. Nice liquorice molasses flavour. Satisfying warming dark beer with choc/coffee making an appearance towards the finish. Pleasant. | |
Marble - Lagonda IPA | 5.00 | Gold colour with bubbly off white ehad. Odd citrus fruit jumble here. Tangerine and grapefruit. Astringent, almost harsh finish. Floral and flowery and a bit of perfume, but not in a good way. Some toffee malt. Marble normally make very good beers, but this just doesn't quite work. | |
Wickwar - Mr Perrett's Traditional Stout | 5.90 | Black beer with ruby edges, bubbly beige head. Liquorice stout aroma. Very liquorice/molasses flavour in mouth. Actually pretty good as it opens up. Still a little bit oily and tarry for me. | |
Darwin - Killer Bee | 6.00 | Deep orange gold colour with no head. Reasonable honeyed. Some malt, some hop. Bit like a honey sweet, but not sweet, it's dry. Honeycomby like a Cadbury's Crunchie. | |
Freeminer - Slaughter Porter | 4.80 | Black colour with ruby edges, disappearing head. Thinnish aroma. Not a lot of intense flavours. Some roasted malts, but just a very easy drinking dark beer. | |
Orkney (Sinclair) - Nimbus Blonde (Atlas range) | 5.00 | Gold colour with thin off white head. Eggy diacetyl aroma. My only really poor beer in 2 days. |
Beer | ABV | Score | Notes |
---|---|---|---|
Oakham - White Dwarf | 4.30 | I had this as my first and last beer on both days and it was as good each time. The fruit, mouthfeel, hop finish that goes on and on were all exceptional. | |
Thornbridge / Thornbridge Hall - Jaipur | 5.90 | Fruity grapefruit and hop were stunning. | |
B&T (Banks & Taylor's) - Edwin Taylor's Extra Stout | 4.50 | Had this in error as the guy behind the counter poured me the wrong beer, but even so this had plenty of malt to keep it going. | |
Jarrow - McConnells Irish Stout | 4.60 | Very deep ruby with lasting bubbly beige head. Decent stout. Got all the component parts. Plenty of tight roasted malts, bit of charcoal, touch of sourish dark fruit. | |
Leyden - Black Pudding Mild | 3.90 | Good proper drinkable mild with almost no hops. | |
Bath Ales - Wild Hare | 5.00 | Having had this in bottle and thinking it superb I was expecting it to be a 4/5 or 5/5 on cask, but the hops that so dominate the bottle version were weaker on this sample. | |
Dark Star - Hophead was 3.8% (some has also been brewed by Fuller's) | 3.40 | Disappointing, no malt structure, just unstructured | |
Brewster's - Hophead | 3.60 | Again another beer I've had before which I was expecting to be as good, but wasn't. Nice hop though. | |
1648 - Original | 3.90 | Drinkable session bitter not as memorable as when I had it at the Evening Star in Brighton. | |
Moor - Old Freddy Walker | 7.30 | I finished off Andrew's half as he didn't like it. Not as cultured as the first time I had it at Maidstone BF in 2005. Maybe needed another day or so to settle down and open up. Malts were a bit in your face and slightly sour. | |
Pictish - Maelstrom | 5.00 | Too sweet and a bit cloying, but still fine. | |
Acorn - IPA | 5.00 | Fine, was expecting better from a great brewery. | |
Ramsgate Brewery (Gadds') - Cobb's Revival | 4.30 | Very yeasty and not sure all the malts were properly brewed out. | |
Ramsgate Brewery (Gadds') - Ship of Fools | 6.60 | A lot maltier and fruitier than I expected of an IPA. Fairly easy drinking for such a strong beer. | |
Westerham - William Wilberforce Freedom Ale | 4.00 | Bit yeasty, malt may not be fully brewed out, decent hop aroma |
Beer | ABV | Score | Notes |
---|---|---|---|
Marble - Lagonda IPA | 5.00 | Earthy with hint of mazipan. Hint of straw and mellowed bitter grapefruit hop. | |
Pictish - Maelstrom | 5.00 | Rich with a fantasict cloying malt and shart mottled hops | |
Jarrow - McConnells Irish Stout | 4.60 | Smooth black beer with good fruity head. Mellow roasted sweet malt with slightly tart bitter finish. | |
Inveralmond - Thrappledouser | 4.30 | Copper gold in colour. Smelt of sick and tasted of sickly malt and earthy sickly hops | |
Gale's - Festival Mild | 4.80 | A black beer. Tart, new and depthless. | |
Coach House - Gunpowder Strong Mild | 3.80 | Black beer. Tasted of buscuit and blackcurrent and blackberry. Too sour though | |
Freeminer - Slaughter Porter | 4.80 | Black, blackcurrent cloying bite with hint of burnt perspex. Not bad | |
Goacher's - Fine Light Ale | 3.70 | What a poor outing for a usually great beer | |
Ventnor - Wight Spirit | 5.00 | Reassuringly rubbish. Had this years ago and throught it was crap then too. Think chemical fridge cleaner. | |
Woodforde's - Wherry | 3.80 | Bit of bile and sour with it. Bit too cold too. Rubbish frankly for a beer that can be great. | |
Moor - Old Freddy Walker | 7.30 | What rubbish. Black porter but with poor construction that resembled alcohol in ditch water | |
Cropton (see also Great Yorkshire) - Balmy Mild | 4.40 | A wretched beer. Burnt malt bite but so poorly integrated with the sickly follow that it grated. It was only surpassed in nausia by the man playing a washboard in the band. |
