Lunchtime and we were probably the first customers. One of our group proudly showed us some envelopes that had been addressed by Charles Dickens and a pre-penny post letter as an example of cross writing which was common in those days, the writer was impressed with his trip on the new Liverpool and Manchester railway with speeds of up to 30mph. Some other customers arrived and had some appetising food delivered from the cafe opposite the pub.
