The usual early evening bustle.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Great Yorkshire (see also Cropton) - Yasigi5.00ExcellentDescribed as a ‘Black Lager’. Deep brown in colour, rich and chocolaty. It came across to me more like a German Dunklebier.
St Austell - Nicholson's Porter5.00GoodDeep, reddish brown in colour, fruity in flavour.
Milestone - Olde English Ale4.90PoorNot the Old Ale I was expecting (I really should read the tasting notes sometimes) but a chestnut-coloured, dry, tangy, malty bitter. Zero evidence of hops in the flavour. Not really my thing at all.

I met up here with Arthur, one of my muckiest old plates, to chew the fat over a few beers.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Hilden - Twisted Hop4.70ExcellentFull-bodied and hoppy. A touch sweet.
Long Man - American Pale Ale4.80ExcellentSmooth, golden, fruity hop tastes.
Hilden - Irish Stout4.30ExcellentBlack, smooth, chocolaty. Not dry.

This pub has undergone a refurbishment since my last visit. Rush hour crowds thinning out by the time I arrived at 7:30. Visit slightly blighted tonight by over-loud music, but it was mild enough to avoid by standing outside.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Broughton - Hopopotamus3.80ExcellentWow – a revelation for Broughton. A really tasty, pale, floral, hoppy, zesty beer.
Whale Ale - Pale Whale3.60AcceptableI was disappointed with this pale beer which in a blind tasting I might have mis-identified as a lager. Mind you, it did come immediately after a very full-flavoured pint.

Not quite the crowds of norm, but still busy at around 6:30pm.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Tyne Bank - Silver Dollar4.90ExcellentGolden bitter with a good hoppy nose. A real mouthful of hoppiness, mellowed by a good malty base. Dry finish.
Bristol Beer Factory - Bitter Californian4.50GoodAn interesting hybrid beer, using dark English malts and a blend of Californian hops (Newport, Chinnook and Nugget), producing a beer with both intensely bitter and light lemony flavours.

I’ve actually spent all of today attending the European Parliament and, a tram, a Eurostar and a tube later, this is my unlikely venue for a quick pint on the way home. I chose a beer whose name seems appropriate to my day.

23 Apr 2012 (Stephen Harris)
Busy in here early on a Monday evening. The fact that I chose a couple of relatively second rate beers was my own fault, given that there were other beers on the bar that are well-known for their excellence.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Cross Bay - Nightfall3.80AcceptableA sweet, fruity, malty, pale bitter with a creamy texture.
Nethergate (was Nethergate Growler for a while then name reverted) - Three Mills3.90AcceptablePale and a bit light on taste. Some fruity malt, some bitter hop. This beer may be a re-badge of the Nethergate 3.9.

12 Mar 2012 (Stephen Harris)
Quiet by the standards of this pub, which is usually rammed with suits in the early evening.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Kirkstall - Kirkstall Pale Ale4.00ExceptionalA very well-balanced, pale and hoppy beer. In perfect condition.
Thornbridge / Thornbridge Hall - Frank as Apollo4.60ExcellentA reddish-copper beer, a bit sweeter than is the norm for Thornbridge. Well hopped with Apollo, giving a lingering hop bitterness.
