12 Nov 2013 (Stephen Harris)
The usual early evening bustle.
Great Yorkshire (see also Cropton) - Yasigi | 5.00 | | Described as a ‘Black Lager’. Deep brown in colour, rich and chocolaty. It came across to me more like a German Dunklebier. |
St Austell - Nicholson's Porter | 5.00 | | Deep, reddish brown in colour, fruity in flavour. |
Milestone - Olde English Ale | 4.90 | | Not the Old Ale I was expecting (I really should read the tasting notes sometimes) but a chestnut-coloured, dry, tangy, malty bitter. Zero evidence of hops in the flavour. Not really my thing at all. |
Fuller's (part of Asahi Europe) - London Pride | 4.10 | Not Tried
Sharp's - Doom Bar | 4.00 | Not Tried
Cottage - Norman's Conquest 5% | 5.00 | Not Tried
Brains - The Rev James Original | 4.50 | Not Tried
St Austell - Nicholson's Pale Ale | 4.00 | Not Tried
01 Nov 2013 (Stephen Harris)
I met up here with Arthur, one of my muckiest old plates, to chew the fat over a few beers.
Hilden - Twisted Hop | 4.70 | | Full-bodied and hoppy. A touch sweet. |
Long Man - American Pale Ale | 4.80 | | Smooth, golden, fruity hop tastes. |
Hilden - Irish Stout | 4.30 | | Black, smooth, chocolaty. Not dry. |
Fuller's (part of Asahi Europe) - London Pride | 4.10 | Not Tried
Marston's - Wychwood Hobgoblin IPA (was Ruby Beer, was Hobgoblin) | 4.50 | Not Tried
Sharp's - Doom Bar | 4.00 | Not Tried
Swannay (formerly Highland) - Scapa Special | 4.20 | Not Tried
Daleside - Morocco Ale | 5.50 | Not Tried
St Austell - Nicholson's Pale Ale | 4.00 | Not Tried
21 Oct 2013 (Stephen Harris)
This pub has undergone a refurbishment since my last visit. Rush hour crowds thinning out by the time I arrived at 7:30. Visit slightly blighted tonight by over-loud music, but it was mild enough to avoid by standing outside.
Broughton - Hopopotamus | 3.80 | | Wow – a revelation for Broughton. A really tasty, pale, floral, hoppy, zesty beer. |
Whale Ale - Pale Whale | 3.60 | | I was disappointed with this pale beer which in a blind tasting I might have mis-identified as a lager. Mind you, it did come immediately after a very full-flavoured pint. |
Fuller's (part of Asahi Europe) - London Pride | 4.10 | Not Tried
Marston's - Wychwood Hobgoblin IPA (was Ruby Beer, was Hobgoblin) | 4.50 | Not Tried

Jersey (now called Liberation) - Liberation Rouge | 4.50 | Not Tried
02 Jan 2013 (Stephen Harris)
Not quite the crowds of norm, but still busy at around 6:30pm.
Tyne Bank - Silver Dollar | 4.90 | | Golden bitter with a good hoppy nose. A real mouthful of hoppiness, mellowed by a good malty base. Dry finish. |
Bristol Beer Factory - Bitter Californian | 4.50 | | An interesting hybrid beer, using dark English malts and a blend of Californian hops (Newport, Chinnook and Nugget), producing a beer with both intensely bitter and light lemony flavours. |
Fuller's (part of Asahi Europe) - London Pride | 4.10 | Not Tried
Sharp's - Doom Bar | 4.00 | Not Tried
Thwaites - Nutty Black | 3.30 | Not Tried

16 Oct 2012 (Stephen Harris)
I’ve actually spent all of today attending the European Parliament and, a tram, a Eurostar and a tube later, this is my unlikely venue for a quick pint on the way home. I chose a beer whose name seems appropriate to my day.
Acorn - Euro IPA | 5.00 | | Amber coloured and with a fruity hop taste. Smooth. |
Ramsgate Brewery (Gadds') - No. 5 | 4.40 | Not Tried
Fuller's (part of Asahi Europe) - London Pride | 4.10 | Not Tried
Caledonian - Flying Scotsman (superseded by 3.5% version) | 4.00 | Not Tried
Sharp's - Doom Bar | 4.00 | Not Tried
Swannay (formerly Highland) - Scapa Special | 4.20 | Not Tried
Downton - Chocolate Orange Delight | 5.80 | Not Tried
Brains - Jack Black | 4.30 | Not Tried | Ran out whilst I was contemplating a second pint. |
23 Apr 2012 (Stephen Harris)
Busy in here early on a Monday evening. The fact that I chose a couple of relatively second rate beers was my own fault, given that there were other beers on the bar that are well-known for their excellence.
Cross Bay - Nightfall | 3.80 | | A sweet, fruity, malty, pale bitter with a creamy texture. |
Nethergate (was Nethergate Growler for a while then name reverted) - Three Mills | 3.90 | | Pale and a bit light on taste. Some fruity malt, some bitter hop. This beer may be a re-badge of the Nethergate 3.9. |
Fuller's (part of Asahi Europe) - London Pride | 4.10 | Not Tried
Sharp's - Doom Bar | 4.00 | Not Tried
Adnams - Southwold Bitter | 3.70 | Not Tried

Thornbridge / Thornbridge Hall - Frank as Apollo | 4.60 | Not Tried
12 Mar 2012 (Stephen Harris)
Quiet by the standards of this pub, which is usually rammed with suits in the early evening.
Kirkstall - Kirkstall Pale Ale | 4.00 | | A very well-balanced, pale and hoppy beer. In perfect condition. |
Thornbridge / Thornbridge Hall - Frank as Apollo | 4.60 | | A reddish-copper beer, a bit sweeter than is the norm for Thornbridge. Well hopped with Apollo, giving a lingering hop bitterness. |
Fuller's (part of Asahi Europe) - London Pride | 4.10 | Not Tried
Triple fff - Pressed Rat & Warthog | 3.80 | Not Tried
Sharp's - Doom Bar | 4.00 | Not Tried

Cropton (see also Great Yorkshire) - Darkangel | 5.00 | Not Tried
09 Feb 2010 (Martin the Mildman)
Cropton (see also Great Yorkshire) - Britannia | 4.20 | | Unremarkable bitter, pale and hoppy with a dryish finish. My score 14/20. |
