I seem to have an uncanny knack of going in here on a Monday evening and expecting it to be quiet but discovering it is quiz night and busy. I appeared to be the only person in the room who knew that ‘Machine Head’ and ‘Burn’ were albums by “70s Rock Band” Deep Purple.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Brew York - X-Panda: Centennial, Ekuanot & Simcoe4.50ExcellentAn amber-coloured ‘Session IPA’. Very heavily hopped. Leafy.
Volden - Session (or Session Ale)3.80AcceptableA hazy amber colour. Heavily malty, to an extent that I did not enjoy it much – not sure if this was just the contrast with the beer that went before.

Our CAMRA Crawl numbers are boosted to around 15 in here and we take over one corner. Always a nice pub to visit. I head for the bus stop when the rest of the gang move on to the Walnut Tree and the North Star.

First session of a weekend-long beer festival. Twenty casks set up on a stillage in the yard, plus the usual line of handpumps inside. CAMRA discount available. There were a few more beers on than I have managed to record.
BeerABVScoreNotes
TicketyBrew - Stout5.20ExcellentRich and satisfying black stout.
Signature Brew - Candela Gold5.00ExcellentA cloudy amber colour. This I liked; strong and full-bodied and boosted by passion fruit juice. Others did not like it at all.
Arbor Ales - Monkey's Uncle5.00ExcellentA hoppy, amber-coloured beer. Very good.
West Berkshire - Bruce's Original Dogbolter6.00GoodStrong, dark Crystal malt beer, redolent of 1980s Friday nights in Lewisham.
TicketyBrew - Rose Wheat Beer4.50GoodA cloudy yellow/orange colour. Wheaty, with prominent rose flavours. Served too warm to be outstanding.
Quaffing Gravy - Jeune4.30AcceptableSweetish, blonde beer.
Rooster's - Golden Eagle4.50AcceptableIn flat condition from the stillage, which cancelled out any spritziness from the use of champagne yeast.

I was surprised how busy this pub was when I came in a little before 8pm on a Monday evening. The answer soon became clear; it was Pub Quiz night and 15 teams were raring to go.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Gyle 59 - Starstruck6.60ExcellentFirst class, strong, near-black Porter.
Hand Drawn Monkey - Monkeys Love Hops 164.20ExcellentGolden in colour with an extreme hop-heavy taste. Some might call it one-dimensional. But the hop in question here is Galaxy, one of my favourites – so it’s ‘Excellent’ from me.
Twickenham (also uses sub-brand Old Hands) - Wolf of the Woods4.70ExcellentAmber-coloured Premium Bitter, with all-British ingredients. Full bodied and rich after the hop-monster drunk immediately before.

The pub is found in Leytonstone, Greater London, E11 3AA.

A large, historic (founded by 1670) town centre pub in High Road. Famous in the 60s and 70s as a live music venue, it has hosted such famous names as Led Zeppelin, Yes, Genesis and Roxy Music, plus local heroes Atomic Rooster. But knocked around and abused in recent years under a succession of themes. Taken over by Antic and re-opened in June 2011 as a 'traditional pub'. Instantly immensely popular. There is a large main bar with big tables for sharing, more of a dining lay-out to the part-screened rear area, and there is a big yard at the back. Pavement tables too. During 2019 the ballroom has been brought back into use and hotel accommodation is now available. Transferred from Antic to Urban Pubs & Bars in late summer 2024.

We have visited this pub 37 times, seen 230 different beers and tried 85 of them.
