No sign of a financial downturn in here. Busy as ever with the same old, same old in attendance. Do these people not get fed up with day in day out of mock bookshelves, tables littered with promotional menus and pint after pint of blessed John Smiths?
BeerABVScoreNotes
Vale - Edgar's Golden Ale4.30GoodLager-light hue and clear as a bell with a coarse white foam head. Creamy malts reminded me of the Roosters/Outlaw style. Fruity melon and lemongrass notes and a good balancing hop finish.
Burton Bridge - Golden Delicious3.80PoorNothing like how I remembered it from 2-3 years ago when it had an alarmingly wishy, urinous appearance, hoppy with distinct flavour of apple peel. This time a more reassuring shade of amber, though somewhat cloudy and overly malty. Perhaps hadn't settled for long enough.

Met a friend who was too ill to go to work but well enough for some last-gasp Christmas shopping and a Spoons Large Mixed Grill. Very busy for a Tuesday lunchtime. Bumped into Mick, a SE London CAMRA legend, who joined us and pushed us into filling out some beer scoring forms. Visit cemented my opinion that this is one of the top JDWs in the SE London/NW Kent region and Orpington's no.1 alehouse. 3 guest ales shone out above the core-bore regulars.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Westerham - Puddledock Porter (superseded by 4% version)4.50ExcellentA good two years since I've seen this beer and it didn't disappoint. Splendid classical porter with a loose yet persistent white head. Perfect for a dark winter lunchtime.
Exmoor - Winter Ale (aka Exmas)5.00GoodDecent woody brown premium winter ale. Extremely well conditioned, subtle obligatory xmas spicing but otherwise a little on the dull side.
Westerham - Special Bitter Ale "1965"5.00Not TriedMick was supping this when we arrived and gave it an "8" on his scoring sheet.

Collared the same colleague with the lure of a Curry Club feast, great value at £7 per head. Secretly hoping to finally find the Titanic Iron Curtain on. Alas, the pump clip had disappeared from sight and after enquiring the worst was confirmed. Some dozy soul had split the spile and 9 gallons of imperial stout had been lost to the cellar floor. My disappointment could not be disguised and the beer still eludes me.
BeerABVScoreNotes
York (now brewed by and at Black Sheep) - Centurion's Ghost Ale5.40ExcellentThick, gloopy black ale with a persistent white head. Liquorice notes force themselves through the roasted barley and a classic bitter hop finish entices a rapid follow-up gulp. Not a bad substitute!

Dragged a colleague along for a Grill Club and to help finish off the festival leftovers. Glad I did!
BeerABVScoreNotes
Hilden - Molly's Stout4.20ExcellentOutstanding black and sultry bitter roasted stout. Pronounced oaty palate rounded off with a classic dry, grassy finish. Top conditioning from what has become a very good JDW outlet for ale. A second pint was a must!

The JDW Fest may have officially finished but festival specials remain on sale for a credit crunching £1.89. ('Available Soon' are Titanic Iron Curtain and Hilden Molly's Stout - joy!)
BeerABVScoreNotes
Robinsons - Old Tom Chocolate Ale6.00GoodChocolate-coloured, chocolate-scented, chocolate-flavoured. Certainly does what it promises on the pump clip, though perhaps a little harsh for lunchtime and rather sickly sweet after a full pint.

10 Nov 2008 (Dubbel)
A welcome retreat from the lashing November rain. Greeted by a choice of four good festival ales as well as the regular quasi-nationals. Festival offer of a 'Pie and a Pint' (well, 3 festival thirds) for £4.69 a winner.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Mikkeller - Viking's Return4.50ExceptionalDeep brown, smooth and roasted bitter coffee power palate. Simply sublime and dispensed in world-beating condition. Unquestionably top marks from me!
Triple fff - Alton's Pride3.80GoodDecent enough malt-led easy drinker with citrus hops building towards the back end of the mouthful. Champ beer of Britain 2008 is stretching it a bit.
Hydes - Mumbo Jumbo4.90GoodBlack, wintry stout-like ale, thick bodied with a milky yet deliberately sour finish from the tart hops used.
Brouwerij Het Anker - Gouden Carolus Ambrio8.00Not Tried
06 Nov 2008 (Dubbel)
A bit dingy with a lack of outside seating. Still, worth a look during ale festival times.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Everards (see entries against Joule's & Robinsons whilst its new brewery was being built) - Equinox4.20GoodPale, lager-like appearance. Clear, light and fruity sweet palate, very little bitterness.
Thwaites - Nutty Black3.30GoodAlmost black with whispy white head, thin bodied but sweet nutty flavour and dark malts dominate. Nice creamy mouthfeel.

The pub is found in Orpington, Greater London, BR6 0LQ.

Typical smalltown High Street Wetherspoon's with the same old community faces and associated post-smoking-ban whiff. Thankfully above average cellar due to the sterling efforts of manager Steve a local hero. Closed its doors for the last time on 4th September 2022 with plans for the re-development of the whole area.

We have visited this pub 17 times, seen 58 different beers and tried 30 of them.
