After phoning every day for the past few days to find out if Thornbridge Kipling was on and being told it would be once one of the other guests ran out, I walked in on a Friday night after a week at work, without a huge amount of hope. Imagine how my heart jumped when I saw that it was now on. Imagine how I felt when it turned out to be fabulous and that I didn't care I was wearing a flourescent yellow cycling jacket and black cycling tights the following 4 times I went back to the bar.
Thornbridge / Thornbridge Hall - Kipling | 5.20 | | So good I had 5 pints. So much flavour, so much hop, so drinkable, so lovely, I can't quite believe. In fact I'm going to have to stop typing this and go back to the pub for some more. |
16 Sep 2010 (ChrisE)
Late afternoon, only two guest ales available. It started to rain and the pub became busier as people came in for shelter. The coming soon display looked tempting, and the chap behind the bar informed that Thornbridge Kipling should be available this weekend.
Caledonian - Mellow Yellow | 4.40 | | Yellow/orange in colour with a bittersweet finish. |
Greene King - Abbot | 5.00 | Not Tried
Marston's - Wychwood Hobgoblin IPA (was Ruby Beer, was Hobgoblin) | 4.50 | Not Tried
Greene King - Ruddles Best (was 3.7%) | 3.40 | Not Tried
Thornbridge / Thornbridge Hall - Kipling | 5.20 | Not Tried | Coming Soon. |

Sat at the rear and watched the BBC News on the TV with subtitles.
Brewster's - Hophead | 3.60 | | The cascades in the aroma are stunning. Lovely session golden beer. |
Everards (see entries against Joule's & Robinsons whilst its new brewery was being built) - Golden Zest | 4.00 | | Decent golden summer ale. |
01 Sep 2010 (Ian)
Quite quiet actually, I was quite surprised.
Brewster's - Hophead | 3.60 | | Stunning hop on aroma. Brilliant session beer you could and would want to drink all night. |
Everards (see entries against Joule's & Robinsons whilst its new brewery was being built) - Golden Zest | 4.00 | | Touch of lemon tart with a pastry base on the finish, otherwise an ok golden ale with some dusty hops. |
Greene King - Abbot | 5.00 | Not Tried
Greene King - Ruddles Best (was 3.7%) | 3.40 | Not Tried
26 Aug 2010 (ChrisE)
Early Thursday evening, and the pub was doing very well with their curry offering. It was disappointing to find only two guest beers on.
Stonehenge - Danish Dynamite | 5.00 | | I did not particularly want any of the other beers on offer, so this was the obvious choice. Perfectly O.K. but nothing special so I caught the bus home. |
Greene King - Abbot | 5.00 | Not Tried
Shepherd Neame - Bishops Finger | 5.00 | Not Tried
Greene King - Ruddles Best (was 3.7%) | 3.40 | Not Tried

Bored at work? Lord's Test Match about to start? Go to the pub then.
Shepherd Neame - Bishops Finger | 5.00 | | It's a decent premium bitter, with decent darkish fruits. It's a very decent beer. Just a bit thin on the finish, could do some more hops, but then I think 90% of UK beers could do with more hops. Some peppery Bramling Cross on the finish here would be perfect. |
Stonehenge - Danish Dynamite | 5.00 | | Just a bit of a wishy washy 5% golden beer. Ok, but just didn't excite me or make me want another. |
24 Aug 2010 (Ian)
Quite busy on the Steak Night. Just popped in to see what was on. Some interesting bees have Available Soon signs on, but only one guest beer on this evening.
JW Lees (see also Lees) - Ind Coope Draught Burton Ale | 4.80 | | Wow, haven't had this in ages, but that yeast aroma is so distinctive. Very drinkable bitter. |
29 Jul 2010 (ChrisE)
19:15 on a Thursday evening. I entered from the back of the pub and saw pump clips featuring Spinning Dog, Loddon, Conwy, and Arundel beers. Unfortunately every one of those had the dreaded "Available Soon" sign stuck above the clip. The usual Greene King and Ruddles beers were on, but on further inspection I found a couple of guest beers on the next bank of handpumps.
Sevice was good, and the pub was busy with both diners and drinkers.
Salopian - Oracle | 4.00 | | I really enjoyed this. A distinctive amber/gold ale. |
Greene King - Abbot | 5.00 | Not Tried
Greene King - Ruddles Best (was 3.7%) | 3.40 | Not Tried
Caledonian - Nectar | 4.30 | Not Tried | Advertised as available in the top bar, and coming soon in the lower bar. I don't like honey beers so I did not enquire whether it was actually on or not. |
Stonehenge - Danish Dynamite | 5.00 | Not Tried
15 Jul 2010 (Ian)
Just to see what was on. Curry night was proving popular again.
Saltaire - Cascade Pale Ale | 4.80 | | Great condition and a very good golden ale with good hop character. |
24 Jun 2010 (Ian)
I hadn't been in for a couple of days, so I wanted to see if there was anything new/interesting on the bar.
Everards (see entries against Joule's & Robinsons whilst its new brewery was being built) - Tiger | 4.20 | | It's a perfectly fine brown bitter without being too interesting. |
Greene King - Back of the Net | 4.30 | | Mid gold thin off white head, lasting. Some yeast and sweet rose petal on aroma, sweet in mouth with some biscuit, very faint dryness on finish. Too biscuit sweet, rose petal sweet in the mouth. |
