I had to come to Canterbury as I had some Debenhams vouchers from work (Christmas) that I had to spend. So I bought a pair of work trousers and a jacket (in the sale) and came up here for some breakfast and The Times Saturday samurai su doku. They also just happened to have on 2 beers that I hadn't had yet on the festival, so I had to have them didn't I?
BeerABVScoreNotes
Elgood's - Double Swan4.50ExcellentGold colour with lasting white head. Good hop on this, nice citric lemon/grapefruit, refreshing summer ale with good biscuit malt base. Very good, very dry hop on end.
Bath Ales - Gem Bitter4.10AcceptableAmber colour, lasting beige head. Caramel/toffee bitter with earthy citric finish. Fine, but not exceptional
04 Mar 2006 (Ian)
Busy Wetherspoon's. I was lucky to get a seat. Normally a good beer range. Like some Wetherspoon's, not so much a pub as a drinking hall. Staff sometimes don't know what beers they have on.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Caledonian - 6 Nations4.20AcceptableGolden beer with lasting off white head. Soft, but minerally with some sulphur, like many Caley beers. Creamy with citrus finish. Soft, creamy floral, caramel aroma. Soft and eggy in mouth. Finish has some tingle to it
Mordue - Geordie Lad (aka Geordie Pride)4.20AcceptableChestnut with deep lasting beige head. Green apple, bitter. Not a lot else to say. Green apple in mouth, acidic, citric hop finish. Probably not at its best as Mordue is a pretty good brewer. Touch of toffee

Mid Thursday afternoon. Quite full with limited available seating. Usual mix of winter seasonals on the Wetherspoon list. Sat in the non smoking area.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Clark's (sometimes shown as Westgate Brewery) - Christmas Moon3.80GoodDeep copper with lasting beige head. Lots of malt. Hops are quite soft, but green and herby on end. Bit watery in mouth with more malt. Quite pleasant. Malty session beer

Pretty full on a Thursday early evening. Good Wetherspoons for beer quality. Lots of late night shoppers
BeerABVScoreNotes
Everards (see entries against Joule's & Robinsons whilst its new brewery was being built) - Sleighbell4.50Good Deep copper colour with thin off white head. Lots of toffee, nice red berry fruit. Almost a bit of whisky too and some apple. Nice in mouth with good acids towards the end. Nice sweetish fruit balanced by acids and citrus hops
JW Lees (see also Lees) - Plum Pudding4.80AcceptableDark copper with thin off white head. Fruits are a bit sour which balances the sweetish fruits, some caramel. Quite a bit of green apple. Fine but not really very plummy

Andrew and Jane had just dropped me off in Canterbury and I had 40 minutes before the next train. As I walked past this pub I saw that it had some Xmas beers on so I wandered in off the street. As the new licensing laws have come in you can now get an alcoholic drink here from 9 a.m. every day!!. So 11.15 on a Sunday was not a problem
BeerABVScoreNotes
Lincolnshire Craft (formerly Tom Wood's) - Jolly Snowman3.60AcceptableCopper colour, thing white head. Yeasty caramel, soft in mouth. Finish has some earthy hop. OK, not exceptional. Hops on end are quite dry
Highgate - Prancer's Pride4.30AcceptablePale copper colour. Tight lasting head. Citric hop and creamyness. A bit like how I remember Boddingtons being back in the early nineties. Quite sharp on the end and some very light caramel
Titanic - Eight Bells4.50AcceptableChestnut brown with lasting beige head. Some ginger nut biscuit flavour. Smooth in mouth , some ginger/spice/hop on the end. Quite well made and decent winter session bitter
Hop Back - Good Elff3.90Acceptable Copper colour with thin beige head. Green apple and hop aroma with some yeast. Spicy hop finish, quite tangy, but a bit lifeless in the middle
Shepherd Neame - Spitfire (or Spitfire Amber Ale)4.20Not Tried

Better of the 2 Wetherspoon's in Canterbury. Had a couple of real ciders on pump as well as Budweiser which is a newish addition to their range and Kronenbourg Blanche as commercial whet beers take off. Not overly busy, but the curry night is very good value. £2.99 without the drink and you get curry, 2 poppadoms, naan bread, rice and mango chutney.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Oakham - JHB3.80AcceptableBland, where are the flavours? Bit cardboardy and dull, disappointing. Breaks my heart to have one of my favourite beers when it is not in good condition

Pit stop for food during mine and Andrew's tour of Canterbury pubs. Good range of guest beers from the Wetherspoon's list, normally served pretty well
BeerABVScoreNotes

Came back the next day to see if any Hophead was left. Pump clip still up so I ask for a pint but met with the reply that all the guests are off cos they are cleaning the lines. So faced with choice of Marstons Bitter or Pedigree or Shep Neame Spitfire. Plonked for the Pedigree as being the best of a bad bunch
BeerABVScoreNotes
Marston's - Pedigree4.50AcceptableFine. Yeasty with some malt and some hop. Brown
05 Jul 2005 (Ian)
Like all Wetherspoon's by 8 pm, pretty crowded. Found place to sit though. I like the beer selection at this one and the quality of the beer served.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Dark Star - Hophead was 3.8% (some has also been brewed by Fuller's)3.40ExceptionalOn as handpull in this Wetherspoon's unlike the gas pressure in Ashford. Knowing it was on at the County Hotel, Ashford, I reckoned that it would also be on here in Canterbury. And it was. And I had 2 pints in 30 minutes and it was bloody marvellous. Golden, hoppy, citrus, a bit of malt, good length, hoppy finish, just an exceptional pint
