Here with Andrew. Some of the festival beers were on. We also ate here. Had a Thomas Hardy ale again. This time from the fridge, which needed warming up. This place gets full on a Saturday night, but we still managed to get a table in the eating area.
Springhead - Oliver's Army | 4.40 | | Reddy brown colour with disappearing bubbly beige. Some yeast, but mainly sweet red fruit malt. Very clean in mouth. More malt and bit of hop on finish, but not huge. Bit watery actually. |
Herold - Black Chalice | 4.80 | | Still don't like the sourness on this. Less buttery than the day before in Ashford, but still it was a struggle to finish it. |
22 Sep 2006 (Andrew)
Came here with Ian, Martin and Jane with the intention of having 1 and moving on. However, they'd taken the bitters off the cooler so they actually tasted of something (well done bar manager). It was busy as always with a large selection of young people whose sole purpose was to make us feel old.
Cains - Dragon Heart | 5.00 | | Dark ruby coloured beer with a sweet rich malty mildly bitter flavour that certainly didn't take 5%! |
Robinsons - Hartleys Cumbria Way | 4.10 | | Light brown beer with a sickly sweetness to it and a sickly bitterness too. Not great. |
Hopdaemon - Incubus | 4.00 | Not Tried
Shepherd Neame - Spitfire (or Spitfire Amber Ale) | 4.20 | Not Tried | Had a sip of Ian's and it tasted like brown soapy water. |
Clark's (sometimes shown as Westgate Brewery) - Ram's Revenge | 4.60 | Not Tried
26 Aug 2006 (Ian)
After doing 9 pubs in Faversham it seemed churlish not to pop into one or two in Canterbury on the way home, so I did. Not overly busy early Saturday evening. Some good guest beers on as usual
Daleside - Blonde | 3.90 | | Golden colour with thin white head. Sherberty US style hop aroma with some yeast. Good grapefruit/tangerine fruit in mouth, with lasting US hop grapefruit finish. I met the brewer in the White Horse, Parson's Green and he is unsurprisingly an American. But in Harrogate? Chinook, Cascade, Mount Hood are all possibles for the hops. Malt is OK in mouth, but a little watery. Good hoppy citrus bite on end is lovely. |
Oakham - White Dwarf | 4.30 | | Almost wonderful. Very pale gold colour. Good hop aroma. Some cereal in mouth. Excellent hop finish. Citrus fruit and hop are good and juicy, but just slightly soapy. |
Hopdaemon - Incubus | 4.00 | Not Tried
Shepherd Neame - Spitfire (or Spitfire Amber Ale) | 4.20 | Not Tried

19 Aug 2006 (Andrew)
Ah JDW's. £1.78 a pint. That's the only important bit that's worth saying about this place. Here with Ian and Jane to drink some cheap (...but far too cold) beer.
Everards (see entries against Joule's & Robinsons whilst its new brewery was being built) - Tiger | 4.20 | | Too cold but good underlying Everard's malt and subtle hops. |
Phoenix - White Monk | 4.50 | | Too cold. Raw uncivilised cane sugar with malt and touch of lime on finish |
Eagle (formerly Wells & Young's, formerly Charles Wells, formerly Wells) - Wells Bombardier (now superseded by 4.1% version) | 4.30 | | Too cold. Brown malty beer with rich hops and malt finish |
Evan Evans - Harvest Home | 4.30 | | Too cold (beginning to see a theme here?). Good base malt richness and mild acidness. Well integrated base hops |
White Horse - Village Idiot | 4.10 | | Too cold. Bit cloudy. Goldenish colour. Quite a bite but, due to the temperature and cloudyness, I doubt this beer tastes anything like it should |

Hey, it's a Wetherspoon's but the beer selection and quality is on the whole pretty good. Here with Andrew and Jane for a late afternoon, early evening session.
Phoenix - White Monk | 4.50 | | Amber colour with thin off white head. American fragrant hop aroma. Bit toasty. Some sweet fruit in mouth. Good citrus finish, bit of candy sugar in mouth. Very drinkable. I had 3 pints. |
Springhead - Barebones | 4.70 | | Slight hazy dark copper colour with disappearing off white head. Grassy hoppy aroma. Some fruity malt. Coffee flavour in mouth. Really odd. Fine. Smells of sauvignon blanc and tastes of caffe latte. Good coffee/choc malt. Lots of flavour. |
Evan Evans - Harvest Home | 4.30 | | Copper with thick creamy head. Rose petal fruit and yeasty aroma. Soft in mouth. Some nice peach/raspberry light fruit. Finish is a bit fast. |
Shepherd Neame - Spitfire (or Spitfire Amber Ale) | 4.20 | Not Tried
Greene King - Abbot | 5.00 | Not Tried
White Horse - Village Idiot | 4.10 | Not Tried
20 May 2006 (Ian)
I had to come to Canterbury as I had some Debenhams vouchers from work (Christmas) that I had to spend. So I bought a pair of work trousers and a jacket (in the sale) and came up here for some breakfast and The Times Saturday samurai su doku. They also just happened to have on 2 beers that I hadn't had yet on the festival, so I had to have them didn't I?
Elgood's - Double Swan | 4.50 | | Gold colour with lasting white head. Good hop on this, nice citric lemon/grapefruit, refreshing summer ale with good biscuit malt base. Very good, very dry hop on end. |
Bath Ales - Gem Bitter | 4.10 | | Amber colour, lasting beige head. Caramel/toffee bitter with earthy citric finish. Fine, but not exceptional |
04 Mar 2006 (Ian)
Busy Wetherspoon's. I was lucky to get a seat. Normally a good beer range. Like some Wetherspoon's, not so much a pub as a drinking hall. Staff sometimes don't know what beers they have on.
Caledonian - 6 Nations | 4.20 | | Golden beer with lasting off white head. Soft, but minerally with some sulphur, like many Caley beers. Creamy with citrus finish. Soft, creamy floral, caramel aroma. Soft and eggy in mouth. Finish has some tingle to it |
Mordue - Geordie Lad (aka Geordie Pride) | 4.20 | | Chestnut with deep lasting beige head. Green apple, bitter. Not a lot else to say. Green apple in mouth, acidic, citric hop finish. Probably not at its best as Mordue is a pretty good brewer. Touch of toffee |
Hopdaemon - Incubus | 4.00 | Not Tried
Coach House - Innkeepers Special Reserve | 4.50 | Not Tried
Eagle (formerly Wells & Young's, formerly Charles Wells, formerly Wells) - Courage Directors (use Banks's entry now please) | 4.80 | Not Tried
Shepherd Neame - Spitfire (or Spitfire Amber Ale) | 4.20 | Not Tried
Greene King - Abbot | 5.00 | Not Tried
Shepherd Neame - Bishops Finger | 5.00 | Not Tried
29 Dec 2005 (Ian)
Mid Thursday afternoon. Quite full with limited available seating. Usual mix of winter seasonals on the Wetherspoon list. Sat in the non smoking area.
Clark's (sometimes shown as Westgate Brewery) - Christmas Moon | 3.80 | | Deep copper with lasting beige head. Lots of malt. Hops are quite soft, but green and herby on end. Bit watery in mouth with more malt. Quite pleasant. Malty session beer |
Shepherd Neame - Spitfire (or Spitfire Amber Ale) | 4.20 | Not Tried
Greene King - Abbot | 5.00 | Not Tried
Gale's - Robins Revenge | 4.00 | Not Tried
Mauldons - Bah Humbug | 4.90 | Not Tried
15 Dec 2005 (Ian)
Pretty full on a Thursday early evening. Good Wetherspoons for beer quality. Lots of late night shoppers
Everards (see entries against Joule's & Robinsons whilst its new brewery was being built) - Sleighbell | 4.50 | | Deep copper colour with thin off white head. Lots of toffee, nice red berry fruit. Almost a bit of whisky too and some apple. Nice in mouth with good acids towards the end. Nice sweetish fruit balanced by acids and citrus hops |
JW Lees (see also Lees) - Plum Pudding | 4.80 | | Dark copper with thin off white head. Fruits are a bit sour which balances the sweetish fruits, some caramel. Quite a bit of green apple. Fine but not really very plummy |
04 Dec 2005 (Ian)
Andrew and Jane had just dropped me off in Canterbury and I had 40 minutes before the next train. As I walked past this pub I saw that it had some Xmas beers on so I wandered in off the street. As the new licensing laws have come in you can now get an alcoholic drink here from 9 a.m. every day!!. So 11.15 on a Sunday was not a problem
Lincolnshire Craft (formerly Tom Wood's) - Jolly Snowman | 3.60 | | Copper colour, thing white head. Yeasty caramel, soft in mouth. Finish has some earthy hop. OK, not exceptional. Hops on end are quite dry |
Highgate - Prancer's Pride | 4.30 | | Pale copper colour. Tight lasting head. Citric hop and creamyness. A bit like how I remember Boddingtons being back in the early nineties. Quite sharp on the end and some very light caramel |
Titanic - Eight Bells | 4.50 | | Chestnut brown with lasting beige head. Some ginger nut biscuit flavour. Smooth in mouth , some ginger/spice/hop on the end. Quite well made and decent winter session bitter |
Hop Back - Good Elff | 3.90 | | Copper colour with thin beige head. Green apple and hop aroma with some yeast. Spicy hop finish, quite tangy, but a bit lifeless in the middle |
Shepherd Neame - Spitfire (or Spitfire Amber Ale) | 4.20 | Not Tried
