Met up with Andrew here for the first of our Canters canter round the pubs. Same beer line up as Andrew.
| Burton Bridge - Sovereign Gold | 4.00 | | Second time I've had this and the US hops (Cascades I think) really come through. Good golden sherberty hoppy beer. |
23 Feb 2008 (Andrew)
It was late afternoon but it felt like 10.30 with plenty of blokes-on-the-town out. Meet up with Ian for a mini crawl
| Burton Bridge - Sovereign Gold | 4.00 | | Rich gold colour. Earthy hop with pink grapefruit and hints of wheat. Very nice in fact |
| Shepherd Neame - Spitfire (or Spitfire Amber Ale) | 4.20 | Not Tried | |
| Greene King - Abbot | 5.00 | Not Tried | |
| Marston's - Pedigree | 4.50 | Not Tried | |
| Banks's - Ringwood Fortyniner | 4.90 | Not Tried | |
12 Jan 2008 (Ian)
What I was thinking, I'm not really sure, but it seemed to be a shame in Canterbury and not do a quick tour of pubs. This was busy but still got served almost straight away and found a table to myself.
| Okell's - Aile | 4.80 | | A lot to live up to as I have a very idealistic view of this beer. And to be honest it doesn't let me down. Lovely spicy old ale. Perfumed lovely roasted flavours, great beer, with nice choc powder too. |
| Vale - VPA | 4.20 | | Gold/copper colour with thin off white head. Slight yeast/earthy aroma. OK English earthy bitter. |
| Evan Evans - FBA | 4.50 | | Copper colour with lasting beige head. Floral hop, some yeast, fairly light malts. Some caramel, some hop bite on finish. Yeah, it’s ok, but not a stunning bitter. |
| Wood's - Shropshire Lass (was 4.1%) | 4.00 | | Copper colour with disappearing head. Aroma of diacetyl. Hard buttery aroma. Some bitterness on end, but ultimately poor due to the diacetyl. |
15 Dec 2007 (Andrew)
Managed to lose Pete and Mark in here and looking at the time I realised I only had 5 minutes before the bus went anyway.
| Nelson - Loose Cannon | 4.30 | Not Tried | The main beer of note that I could see on though the crowds |
23 Nov 2007 (Andrew)
Busy-ish lunch time. Lots of Nelson and Welton's beers on.
| Nelson - Pieces of Eight | 3.80 | | Smoaky. Don't remember it being smoaky before. Anyway, lovely smoaky flavours. |
16 Nov 2007 (Andrew)
Here with Mr. Harris for a spot of business. Busy with lunchtime drinkers. Got a booth though, eventually.
| Hanlons (formerly O'Hanlon's) - Dry Stout | 4.20 | | Black with no real head. Dry but with a plumey-dark-fruit flavour. Good burnt malt and a powdery feel. Excellent stuff |
| Batemans - XXXB (now superseded by 4.8% version) | 4.50 | Not Tried | |
| Marston's - Pedigree | 4.50 | Not Tried | |
| Jennings (since closure now brewed at Marston's) - Sneck Lifter | 5.10 | Not Tried | Adrian had it and it tasted good |
| Robinsons - Old Tom | 8.50 | Not Tried | |
| Caledonian - Golden Promise | 5.00 | Not Tried | |
| York (now brewed by and at Black Sheep) - Centurion's Ghost Ale | 5.40 | Not Tried | |
| Coach House - Gunpowder Strong Mild | 3.80 | Not Tried | |
| Everards (see entries against Joule's & Robinsons whilst its new brewery was being built) - Terra Firma | 4.50 | Not Tried | |
| Cotleigh - Brewtown 200 | 5.00 | Not Tried | |
18 Aug 2007 (Ian)
Busy Wetherspoons and the better of the two in Canterbury.
| Exmoor (now brewed by Hogs Back) - Fox | 4.20 | | Gold with thick lastnig beige head. Never sure in a Spoons if this is how the beer is supposed to taste. Good condition. Fine bitter, nothing out of place, but nothing remarkable either. English hops are ok, earthy, bit of tingle on end, faint citrus. Malts give mouthfeel fullness. Yeasty/citrus aroma. Fine. |
20 May 2007 (Ian)
After seeing Kent humiliate Glamorgan inside of 4 hours of a 50 over a side game, I came here. More or less full mid Sunday afternoon.
| Wem (formerly Hanby) - Scorpio Porter | 4.50 | | Dark ruby, lasting beige head. Some choc, reasonable fullness, some malt/cereal character. Choc is sweetish Cadbury Dairy Milk in mouth, dryer on finish with some grainyness. Fine, but too sweet. |
| Hopdaemon - Incubus | 4.00 | Not Tried | |
| Shepherd Neame - Spitfire (or Spitfire Amber Ale) | 4.20 | Not Tried | |
| Greene King - Abbot | 5.00 | Not Tried | |
| Marston's - Pedigree | 4.50 | Not Tried | |
| Mordue - Radgie Gadgie | 4.80 | Not Tried | |
| Jennings (since closure now brewed at Marston's) - Tom Fool | 4.00 | Not Tried | |
| Nelson - Pieces of Eight | 3.80 | Not Tried | |
27 Dec 2006 (Ian)
True the food is cheap. True the beer is cheap. True this pub normally has a handful of guests in good condition. But the service is apalling. As a customer service manager myself there was one member of staff who I would have disciplined immediately due to his lack of professionalism in front of customers. But hey.
| Cotleigh - Red Nose Reinbeer | 4.50 | | Better in the Spoons in Ashford. This was lacking flavour. |
27 Dec 2006 (Andrew)
There's usually something on of interest here and the quality is usually quite good too.
| Rebellion - Sleighed | 4.20 | | Biscuity, buttery (Ian reckons it's diacetyl), and watery golden beer. |
| Hopdaemon - Incubus | 4.00 | Not Tried | |
| Shepherd Neame - Spitfire (or Spitfire Amber Ale) | 4.20 | Not Tried | |
| Greene King - Abbot | 5.00 | Not Tried | |
| Shepherd Neame - Bishops Finger | 5.00 | Not Tried | |
| Cotleigh - Red Nose Reinbeer | 4.50 | Not Tried | |
