I have to admit that I'm getting bored of coming to this pub but all the time there's a chance that the beer-festival beers are on I'm like a moth to the flame. No idea who was in today. I came; I drank; I left.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Cotleigh - Honey Buzzard4.50AcceptableDark brown (which surprised me). Hint of honey and a soft mouth feel made this initially pleasant but an overly toasted sugar finish ruined it a bit.

Got a seat this time. There seemed to be less staff behind the bar today which meant that even though there was only me waiting to be served I waited for a good 5 minutes before they got around to me. ...but I got a seat so it's swings and roundabouts.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Triple fff - Alton's Pride3.80AcceptableChampion Beer of Britain 2008. Ummm, my guess is it didn't taste like this when they judged it. Nice initial flavours of rose petals and zesty fruit but then a nasty harsh bitter end.
Okell's - Maclir4.40AcceptableA wheat beer. Nice soft mouth feel with some subtle lemon going on but like the fff, there was this harsh bitter end.

Got here a bit earlier today but it was still busy. Got a place by a pillar though. Be pleased when this beer festival is over so I don't have to come here so often - there's only so much bustle I can take.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Wadworth - Camrale4.00AcceptableI've never been a fan of Wadworth beers and this one did little to change my opinion. It smelt of grass and was lively and sharp, tasting of lemon grass. It was probably a green-hop beer and I wasn't that impressed with it.

It was much better weather today and that brought back the punters. I couldn't even get a pillar to stand at it was that busy. Still, I saw that the Californian Pale Ale is back on the 'comming soon' pumps so that's something.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Meantime - Coffee Porter5.00PoorIt looked in good condition but I've not had it before so who knows. It tasted strongly of instant coffee but that was backed up with this really unpleasant sharp sour bite. I didn't like this.

The pub was much quieter than last week but that was probably because the weather was so bad. There's a lot to be said for bad weather. The beer range was good with at least 4 beers I wouldn't mind trying.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Shepherd Neame - Fuggles Kentish Pale Ale4.40GoodPale gold colour. Soft in the mouth. Slightly grassy flavour with hints of lemon. Quite a mellow beer.

My 5th day in a row here. It's beginning to get to me. There's always so much bustle that I'm beginning to feel I'm in an airport. Virtually no elderly gents in today; I miss them.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Caledonian - Smokey Pete4.30AcceptableCaramel colour. Hint of smoke. Sweet tangy beer. Quite nice if a little sickly.

There didn't seem to be any elderly gents in suits today. However, I'm beginning to spot obvious regulars. Managed to squeeze against a pillar today and watch the lunch crowds complain about the lack of empty seats.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Mikkeller - Viking's Return4.50AcceptableRoasted ground coffee with a hint of red fruit. Too much flavour for a beer. Made me feel like I was drinking in Starbucks.

Back again to see what's on. Fewer elderly gents around today with the crowd seemingly more food orientated. No pillars available to stand at so I just milled around like a vagrant.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Banks's - Mansfield Old Baily4.80GoodBrown beer. Tart-sweet tangy flavours dominate from the off. The hop finish was well ballanced.

04 Nov 2008 (Andrew)
Back again to see what new beers they had on. There were still a fair few elderly gents wearing light brown suits sitting around with their pints. I nearly asked one of them if they went home at all last night though it could well have been a different elderly gent than yesterday. I stood by another pillar this time as my regular one was being hogged by a man and his bag.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Barons - BlackWattle Original Ale4.80GoodMuddy chocolate brown colour. The intial flavour was a tart-sweet combo which was immediately replaced by a strong harsh grapefruit background which itself was replaced by a rough, slightly acrid finish. Quite nice but a bit hard to place. I guess that's the effect of Wattle seeds then.

Really want to say I’m here for the jumbo sausages but that would just be a lie. Here to see what festival beers were on but I was so disappointed with the choice that I nearly had the Bishops Finger. It was busy inside with lots of elderly men in light brown suits drinking pints. I felt like I was in Yorkshire. I stood by a pillar and tried to blend in.
