First port of call on a tour of Canterbury. Not too busy but the range of beers on was disappointing.

As part of a wireless Ratebeer.com tasting I came, logged onto my laptop and rated. Rate on Rater!!
BeerABVScoreNotes
Okell's - Alt5.00GoodCertainly a good looking beer. Some very good fruit in the mouth red and dark fruits. Malts are quite sweet too. Not much like Uerige fresh or a couple of the others, as this is a bit fuller than something like the Schlossel. But overall it’s a tasty fullish sweetish malty beer with some dryness on the finsih. Would I pick this as an Alt in a blind tasting? Probably not, more a malt led best bitter. Drinkable enough though.
Herold - Black Chalice4.80PoorToo much liquorice flavour for me, I didn't like it, I'm afraid.
Rooster's - Patriot4.70PoorGold with a lasting off white head. Slightly sweet golden syrup aroma and a bit of freshly chopped wood too, which is odd. Sweet woody flavour carries on into the mouth and the malts are really a lot sweeter than I would expect. Finish has some dryness without any distinctive hop taste. Not a world beater at all and certainly not one of Rooster’s best. Their Outlaw beers tend to be better these days

Only my second visit to a 'spoons since their 2010 beer festival began and lucky me I hit gold! There near the far end of the hand pumps was a pump clip I'd not seen for 15 years; Fremlins. Was it as good as the Fremlins I used to drink in the late 80's? Hard to tell really; that was a long time ago. ...but hey, Fremlins.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Shepherd Neame - Fremlins Bitter3.50GoodWell I never thought I'd enter a rating for this beer. Okay... it had very little aroma (unlike my memories of the original) with perhaps just a whiff of yeast. The body was a bit watery (I'm sure the original had a bit more malt to the structure). It did have that distinctive nuttiness and heathery hop of Fremlins and the finish had that tell tale heather-hop Fremlins bite. The real question is would I have had another if I'd have had time? Yes I would.

Umm, late afternoon and there were a fair few people in, including a bunch of folk in fancy dress. The beer festival was on and I asked for the Coconut Porter. The barman asked if I'd like to try it first which was very good of him.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Banks's - Maui Brewery Coconut Porter5.00ExcellentThis was excellent. Black, powdery, slightly sour with a hint of coffee and hint of roasted malt. The finish was slightly sweet and tangy with some mild bitterness.

So far, the best Spoons I've been to for beer selection and any kind of knowledge behind the bar for the beers.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Shepherd Neame - Goose Island Honkers Ale4.20ExcellentClear deep amber colour, lasting beige head. Bready yeasty aroma, typical of Shepherd Neame yeast. Brewed with the cheesy Sheps yeast, some bitterness on finish but this is all about the yeast. Decent very decent best bitter. Can't fault it for lack of character.
Oakham - Rollercoaster4.80ExcellentOakham typical great hops, just it took lots of pulls to get the beer through, so I'm guessing this will be fantastic when I get a decent pint of it.
Banks's - Morrells Oxford Blue3.70ExcellentGold amber colour with thin beige head. Decent bitter with biscuit malt. Actually this I think is rather good. A bitter with good hops and enough of a malt base. But the bitterness on the finish is really good. Really arrested me, very drying on finish, just surprisingly good
Banks's - Maui Brewery Coconut Porter5.00ExcellentBlack with ruby edges. Disappearing dark beige head. I’m not a big fan of coconut, but I thought that this was pretty good. Nice thick malts, some choc coconut on aorma, like a dark chocolate Bounty bar. Good mouthfeel. I like the swallow and finish very much. Really good, some burnt malt bitterness on finish. Love the third of a pint. It’s good, really deep and satisfying with a bit of spice and sweetness from the coconut
Everards (see entries against Joule's & Robinsons whilst its new brewery was being built) - Flourish3.50GoodCopper colour disappearing head. OK session bitter with some decent malt, some biscuit on finsh and some dryness. Does what a session bitter should, pints go down with no notice but with enough taste to want to try more. Good biscuit.
Marston's - Zululand Zulu Blonde4.50AcceptableGold, disappearing head. Grassy hops are what hit you first. Some caramel, then more grassy hop. OK, some lasting hop on finish which reminds me of cut hay. Mouthfeel needs more.
Caledonian - Old Seadog IPA5.20AcceptableAttractive amber colour, lasting beige head. Some butter on aroma. Some hop yes, some warming kick on end. Rather a bit not this thing nor the other, doesn't quite click without being anything wrong with it.
Batemans - Waynfleet Hedgerows3.70AcceptableGold disappearing head. Some house yeast on aroma. OK bitter with some flowery hop. Keeps to the style of the house in terms of a bitter in that it is yeasty and flowery. ok

Having read so much about Ramsgate pubs on this site over the past years, I thought that it was time for a return to the seaside town. Having a free Saturday gave me the opportunity to go and see what all the fuss was about. However, before that, I needed breakfast. Seeing that Andrew posted that this pub and a fair few festival beers on, I took the chance of breaking my journey at Canterbury, having breakfast and trying a couple of beers.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Mordue - Autumn Tyne4.00AcceptableDeep gold, thin beige head. A slightly citrus hoppy bitter. It's fine. Not much on the malts, not much aroma. Nothing wrong with it, except an absence of any real flavour.
Robinsons - Old Tom Chocolate Ale6.00PoorHad this in bottle in The Rake about 3 weeks agon and I wasn't impressed. This has a similar problem in that the artifical milk choc is too artificial. Better than in bottle as the base beer comes through more and is wider and has more depth than it's pasteurised counterpart. But it's still not very good. Medicinal aroma., bit of cherry fruit in middle. Hot alcohol on finish. Choc fades a bit as it goes down, but it's not good.
