Came in hoping to try Fortitude from the Wantsum brewery as Linda had said it was coming on today. Unfortunately it was still a bit cloudy so wasn't on sale yet but Linda poured me a taster anyway which was really nice of her.

Came down hoping to try the new Wantsum beer that I knew Linda had on. Unfortunately it had gone on the Friday before and sold out in 2 hours. Anyway, I had a different beer and a chat with Linda about the new brewery.

Used to come here with Adrian but he's up in the Smoke - so I texted him and he phoned me back; so it was kind of like the old days. Sat outside and dodged the lone wasp that seems to keep sentry here.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Hidden - Froth and Nonsense4.20GoodCopper brown bitter. Soft mouth feel. Red fruits, sweet, fantastically reminiscent of something I used to drink years ago - like Courage Best.

Ah the Phoenix. Linda was in the back cutting up meat leaving a group of locals sitting at the bar chatting. I do like the Phoenix - a good, solid pub with a relaxed feel to it.

Here with Ian. Only 3 beers on and only 1 other customer in. The Dark Star APA went off as I ordered it but I actually meant to order the Youngs anyway so all good things happen in the end.

Only a couple of locals in, but met up with Andrew and we chatted about all things beer. Linda, the landlady, said she had been really busy which is good news and accounted for a couple of empty pumps.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Dark Star - American Pale Ale (some has also been brewed by Fuller's)4.70ExcellentJust about the last one from the barrel, but increadible flavours, great condition and I loved it.

Kent vs Essex in 20 20 game. Came here twice once, before the game and then as the heavens opened which cancelled the game, I got here just before it poured down. Very funny watching people in shorts and Tshirts coming in soaked. 8 handpumps now in this pub with lager only in bottle.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Dark Star - Over The Moon3.80ExcellentVery hoppy and an excellent dark bitter.
Thornbridge / Thornbridge Hall - Ashford4.20GoodLooked to be the best selling beer on. Very tasty dark brown ale, lots of grain flavours. Only a touch of diacetyl that faded second time round.
Moorhouse's - Black Cat Mild3.40AcceptableA bit sweeter than I remember. Decent nick. Fine.

Stepping in the Phoenix was like stepping out of the bustle into the calm. Groups of folk were sitting around enjoying a quiet pint with their friends. The barman was as friendly as ever and Linda was darting in and out of the kitchen bringing people food. I couldn't stay long which was a shame.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Oscars (formerly Hart of Preston) - Lass be Mine4.00GoodIn excellent condition. Brown bitter with hints of melon and mandarin orange with a strong sharp dryish grapefruit bitterness that last well into the finish.

What a great pub. I walked up a very quite Crossington Road that felt almost summery. The pub was quite busy but with the sun shinning I just had to sit outside and stare across to Puckle Lane (now they've cut down the trees along the railway embankment).
BeerABVScoreNotes
Brains - Bitter3.70GoodI liked this. A yellowy brown coloured beer in good condition. Smelt of sulphur and tasted of sulphur and a slight metalicy-tangy bite.

Had to get my hair cut at midday, so decided to make an afternoon of it. Met Pete in the Phoenix where he was stretching his lunch hour to breaking point. Quite a few in and 7 beers on, only managed to remember 5 of them. The landlord and lady are very friendly, always a hello and goodbye.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Blackwater (sub-brand of Salopian) - Darkness4.30GoodBlack with thin white head. Slightly thin in the mouth, but with a good hit of blackberry up front and sourness on the finish. Certainly one to have again.
