Funny, isn't it, when someone goes to a pub and then suddenly it's "Oh, I haven't been there for a bit, let's go," which is why after Andrew came at the end of last week, I pitched up here about 2 hours after Blair. After being dropped off by the bus back from Herne to Canterbury, the New Inn wasn’t open yet, so I walked up to this pub. Linda was serving and I sat at the rather lovely wooden bar. Linda says that she is now a free house and so can order whatever beer she likes. Good mix of locals in.
Pilgrim - Moild | 3.80 | | – Dark ruby mild, I like the sour dark fruit aroma. It’s almost like an old ale. Plenty of dark fruit jam. Oddly enjoyable |
Dark Star - Hophead was 3.8% (some has also been brewed by Fuller's) | 3.40 | | Full of diacetyl |
Greene King - Abbot | 5.00 | Not Tried
Dark Star - Festival | 5.00 | Not Tried
Banks's - Young's London Original (was Bitter) - previously brewed in Bedford and at Wychwood | 3.70 | Not Tried
Eagle (formerly Wells & Young's, formerly Charles Wells, formerly Wells) - Wells Bombardier (now superseded by 4.1% version) | 4.30 | Not Tried

Very quiet when we got here at around 4 in the afternoon. It was bitterly cold outside though. This pub is great on a cold day, the fire is a great touch. Really comfortable place to kick back and relax with a good pint.
Pilgrim - Moild | 3.80 | | Dark brown beer with no head. Quite fruity with a little smoke. Nice mild. |
Dark Star - Hophead was 3.8% (some has also been brewed by Fuller's) | 3.40 | Not Tried
Dark Star - Festival | 5.00 | Not Tried

It was a cold bright day and the streets were fairly clear of people. This of course has nothing to do with the pub but it's called setting the scene. The pub was busy with a large group of gents standing by the bar. Fortunately they’d already been served so I got served quite quickly. I was tempted to have the Dark Star hophead but there was a Nelson beer on and I felt like that.
Nelson - Pieces of Eight | 3.80 | | In great condition. Reddish brown with a reedy taste with slightly tart red fruit. A proper old fashioned bitter. |
Dark Star - Hophead was 3.8% (some has also been brewed by Fuller's) | 3.40 | Not Tried
Dark Star - Festival | 5.00 | Not Tried
Banks's - Young's London Original (was Bitter) - previously brewed in Bedford and at Wychwood | 3.70 | Not Tried

After the rubbish day I'd had a beer was in order and the Phoenix is a first class place to have it.
Mauldons - Silver Adder | 4.20 | | Linda said it was a good choice and she was right. Darkish golden colour with a sparse frothy head. Intially I though it tasted like Summer Lightning but then the flavours quickly turned into tart fruit salad with slightly syrupy body and a tart hop finish. |
Harvey's - Sussex Best Bitter | 4.00 | Not Tried
Banks's - Young's London Original (was Bitter) - previously brewed in Bedford and at Wychwood | 3.70 | Not Tried
Eagle (formerly Wells & Young's, formerly Charles Wells, formerly Wells) - Wells Bombardier (now superseded by 4.1% version) | 4.30 | Not Tried

Loddon - Rin Tin Tin | 4.10 | Not Tried

Sitting in the Phoenix is weird for me because I used to be here all the time 5 years ago and it's changed inside. Gone are all the pump clips on the beams; gone is the big extracter fan on the ceiling; gone are the benches by the door that Alan used to sit at and drink Abbot with a Whiskey chaser; gone are the tables at the back and gone is Keith. Still a lovely pub though. The combination of black beams and soft white walls gives it a very relaxed feel. In fact, it's a great pub.
Houston - Texus | 4.50 | | Really liked this. Dark brown with a toasted malt and instant coffee finish. Soft mouth feel and very drinkable. |
Hambleton - Buckaroo | 4.00 | | A dark brown sweet beer with a heathery perfumed finish. The smell I got holding it in my mouth and breathing out through my nose reminded me of the Tickled Trout in Wye for some reason. |

Missioned it here then relaxed in the sofas for a while. I really like this place.
Inveralmond - Lia Fail | 4.70 | | Fantastic beer. Full bodied with a rich sweet flavour full of fruit and malt. Gorgeous. |
Rother Valley - Smild | 3.80 | Not Tried
Banks's - Bitter | 3.80 | Not Tried

Now serving 7 beers. Here with Andrew on pub number 2. Excellent pub, Linda is a great landlady. Good range of beers.
Nelson - Powder Monkey | 4.40 | | Distinctive Nelson yeast on aroma. In the mouth the malts are good, some roast, and then quite parching hop finish. It's a pleasing beer, lots of flavour and I was quite impressed. |
Robinsons - Olympic Gold | 4.00 | | Gold, thin beige head. Bit of toffee, bit of yeast. It's an alright yeasty bitter with some character. Actually not bad, good character, some drying hop on end. |
Burton Bridge - Amazing Grace | 4.50 | | Copper, thin off white head. Quite a yeasty bitter, some toffee. It's a fairly standard bitter, but with good flavours. Rather nice to be honest. |

Fairly quiet with a couple of locals at the bar and the Olympics on the TV in the corner. Ian and I sat at the back on the comfy chairs and enjoyed our pints.
Nelson - Powder Monkey | 4.40 | | For some reason I thought this would be a dark mild - but it wasn't. It was a pale brown coloured beer. Earthy peaty beer with a hint of whiskey and a hint of astringency on the finish. |
Greene King - Abbot | 5.00 | Not Tried
Burton Bridge - Gold Medal Ale | 4.50 | Not Tried
Banks's - Young's London Original (was Bitter) - previously brewed in Bedford and at Wychwood | 3.70 | Not Tried

Burton Bridge - Sovereign Gold | 4.00 | Not Tried

With Kid Rock's "All Summer Long" playing in my head Adrian and I headed off to the Phoenix. What a top pub. 7 beers on and one of them a Kent micro. We sat outside for the last time (as Adrian's got a new job in London working for the Tory party) and dodged the wasps.
Whitstable - Pearl of Kent | 4.50 | | What a great pint. Pale gold in colour with a rich and sharp body. Lime and Kiwi flavours dominate with an earthy, nettley hop bite. Excellent. |
Greene King - Abbot | 5.00 | Not Tried
Jennings (since closure now brewed at Marston's) - Cumberland Ale | 4.00 | Not Tried
Palmers - Copper Ale | 3.70 | Not Tried
Weltons - Heatwave | 4.60 | Not Tried

After a really rather tiresome week at work it was time for a pint. Where’s close, serves a good pint and has outside seating? The Phoenix, that's where; so that’s where Adrian and I went. It was actually busier outside than usual but that was clearly due to the smoking ban. The pub was as friendly and relaxed as usual with a good beer line-up. I'd have probably had the Harveys SBB had it not been for the Palmers beer. I've a soft spot for Palmers.
Palmers - Copper Ale | 3.70 | | Good head, rich, minerally, sour-malt-mashy beer with a soft mouth feel. Got to love Palmers |
Harvey's - Sussex Best Bitter | 4.00 | Not Tried
Fuller's (part of Asahi Europe) - London Pride | 4.10 | Not Tried
Sharp's - Atlantic IPA (now replaced by 4.2% Atlantic) | 4.80 | Not Tried
