Now owned and run by Sam, who also owns the Carpenter's Arms and the Two Doves, also in Canterbury. Met Sam here this evening and we go way back in terms of work, but now great to see her and her dad doing well in the pub business. Good crowd of people in this, Andrew's favourite Canterbury pub, with a good juke box and 4 Kent micro beers. Also had the Franziskaner wheat beer on tap. Could well be in the 2010 Good Beer Guide.

Ramsgate Brewery (Gadds') - No. 35.00GoodNot my favourite Gadd's beer, but having chatted to Eddie Gadd about it last weekend, he says that he is still experimenting from time to time to develop the beer. I liked this version, a bit more hoppy with good solid malts underneath.

Excellent little pub this. We sat outside and enjoyed the sun and watching the odd and interesting passers-by. Good beer line-up as usual with 4 beers from 3 Kent micros.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Whitstable - Native Bitter3.70GoodI liked this. A brown bitter with hints of vanilla and tart fruit but with a oaty feel in the mouth and good herby hops and malt.

Out of the blue Martin contacted me to say he'd be in Canterbury - so we met up. The pub was subdued, possible because it was so cold outside possibly because it was post Christmas, but we sat under the Fremlins window and had a very enjoyable time.

Hopdaemon - Incubus4.00ExceptionalIt was just froth in a pint glass as she poured it but to her credit we eventually got full pints without asking for them to be topped up. Given it's lively nature I wondered if it would be up to much but it was brilliant. The flavours were so well integrated that it was like drinking a velvet pulse (make of that what you like but I know what I mean). Fresh strawberry and melon were present with fruity malt. Brilliant.

Pretty lively with a fair number of santa hatted customers drinking Stella.

Ramsgate Brewery (Gadds') - No. 35.00AcceptableI love the concept, but for some reason it never delivers for me. A bit sweet maybe.

Here with Ian for a pre-Christmas mini-crawl. Great pub with the feel of a proper boozer. There was a group of blokes in Santa hats around the bar, a handful of quite locals along one end of the bar, a group of noisy locals at the other end and assorted tourists families at the tables.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Hopdaemon - Incubus4.00GoodNice strawberry flavours. Slightly rich with some tanins and some reedy notes. Reminds me of those Strawberry-Cream sweets you get at your grans.

There was a group of lively (euphemism for drunk) young people sat in the corner who were enjoying a pre Christmas session and an assorted group of Canterbury types around the bar.

Whitstable - East India Pale Ale (or EIPA)4.10ExcellentAlways have this in here, always excellent. I've decided that perhaps it's just me as my wife tried it and said it was "disgusting" - but then she was drinking Stella! It's light, floral and has a superb lemony bite in the finish - one of my favourites.

Not many people in. I sat at the far end of the front part of the pub which had an unfortunate smell of bleach.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Ramsgate Brewery (Gadds') - No. 35.00AcceptableHad a faint acidic-vinegar bite to it which spoilt an otherwise nice, fruity, half of No.3.

Fair few regulars around the bar. Staff are friendly and locals good fun. Sat and had my pint whilst waiting for my friends to arrive.

Hopdaemon - Incubus4.00GoodReally malty bitter. This is one my my favourite bitters arounbd, really reliable.

The more I come to this pub in the light the more I like its interior. Of course the Fremlins engravings on the windows always help (can't beat Fremlins!). Not overly busy inside but that just meant I could see more of the pub.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Whitstable - Pearl of Kent4.50GoodBit sharper than the last time I had it but still very good. The hop on this (which I assume is Perle) is lovely.

First time I've been here and I'm really impressed. Great atmosphere and really interesting interior. I'll be back.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Whitstable - East India Pale Ale (or EIPA)4.10AcceptableI've never been a fan of this beer but gave it another go anyway. It's not bad but there just doesn't seem to be much going on. It is nice and smooth though.
