Visits Details

24 Jan 2010 (Ray)
Quick, friendly service.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Okell's - Aile4.80GoodPulled deep ruby red with long lasting dark beige head. Well judged smoky aromas and taste backed up with coffee and liquorice. Long, hoppy finish to a well crafted and unusual porter.
Deeside - Nechtan4.10PoorStrong floral aromas. Harsh flavours, hint of parma violets. End of cask.
10 Jan 2010 (McGargle)
Quiet. Hand pumps need a service.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Cairngorm - Black Gold4.40AcceptableThin in body and flavour probably caused by pump syphoning back. Needed, perhaps, 40 pulls to fill the glass.
21 Dec 2009 (McGargle)
Surprisingly busy given the snow. Typical selection of unimaginative Christmas 'specials'.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Cairngorm - Santa's Sledgehammer5.60GoodBrown malty ale with plenty of fruit and enough hops to retain interest.
12 Dec 2009 (Ray)
Absolutely jammed but with plenty of staff service was quick and pleasant.
BeerABVScoreNotes
RCH - Steaming Santa4.50AcceptableA golden ale (not ruby as described by others). Hints of goldings but nothing to distinguish it from the crowd.
03 Dec 2009 (McGargle)
Curry night and busy. Quick service.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Batemans - Rosey Nosey4.90GoodComplex, rich tasting creamy ale. Initially malty with hops (Challenger?) balancing later. Excellent winter warmer with typical Bateman's character.
Cairngorm - Winter Flurry3.80GoodWell crafted light copper session ale. Hints of caramel with a dry, spicy finish.
30 Nov 2009 (Ray)
Busy. Good post festival beer selection.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Deeside - Macbeth4.10GoodWell made and balanced golden hoppy ale with dry citrussy clean finish.
Deeside - Nechtan4.10Not TriedOne of my favourites but no time to try it tonight.
30 Nov 2009 (McGargle)
Quietish. Xmas ales starting to appear.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Deeside - Nechtan4.10ExcellentGolden colour with white lacy head. Powerful hop aromas and uncompromisingly hoppy and bitter offset by softer malts. Short dry finish.
Deeside - Macbeth4.10Not Tried
04 Nov 2009 (Ray)
Disappointing selection for Wetherspoon's Festival. Choose from plum or raisin flavour or Davenports lager.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Belhaven - Caledonian Deuchars IPA3.80PoorNow a pale imitation of its former glorious self you'll struggle to find much evidence of hops or malt. Slightly soapy finish. Well kept poor ale.
Greene King - Abbot5.00Not TriedWhy try another boring, bland, brown beer?
28 Oct 2009 (McGargle)
Surprisingly quiet given this was day one of the ale festival.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Greene King - Boss Hogg Bitter4.10AcceptableDark golden ale served in good condition. Predominantly malty with hints of fruit and hops. Little aroma, little to excite.
Shepherd Neame - Port Grumpy's Pale Ale5.00AcceptableLight golden colour and loose white head. Powerful hop aroma and bite balanced by the malt. A little thin for a 5% American style ale. Served a touch green. Could be 4* in a couple of days.
Batemans - Iron Lady4.10Not Tried
02 Oct 2009 (McGargle)
Busy but pleasant, quick service.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Deeside - Nechtan4.10AcceptablePoured clear and bright with a tight long lasting head. Tasted a little tired.
Deeside - Brude3.50AcceptableDifficult to pull - suspect beer had drained below the syphon. Past its best. Would have 2.1/2* if available.
