Visits Details

22 Nov 2013 (McGargle)
Busy. One bar staff struggled to cope and resorted to the dreaded 'Who's next?' rather than managing the queue.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Wild Beer Co. - Epic Saison5.00GoodMuch better than Rogue Wave. Fresh, tasty, refreshing but still timid in comparison to, say, Dupont. Different markets presumably?
Cromarty - Rogue Wave5.70GoodRestrained rather than full on. Good use of malts.
15 Nov 2013 (McGargle)
Mostly locals tonight. Craft keg just increased from £3.20 to £4.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Blackjack - Four of a Kind (keg)6.80ExcellentWell crafted big US style IPA.
10 Nov 2013 (McGargle)
Pleasantly busy. Regulars recovering from beer fest.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Buxton - High Tor6.30AcceptableA red IPA which would have benefitted from a warmer dispense (keg).
21 Oct 2013 (McGargle)
Mostly locals tonight
BeerABVScoreNotes
Bristol Beer Factory - Milk Stout4.50ExcellentBrave to brew and brave to stock this was an excellent example of a classic style. Coffee, chocolate with a distinct milky overlay - top stuff.
Tiny Rebel - Flux4.00PoorBlack Pale Ale, unusually for The Marine, ruined by poor dispense. Over-chilled and over-carbonated from the keg.
Fyne - Wee Jaggy Gruit3.80PoorThis didn't work for me at all. Low hop rate, overly malty with strong herby hints from nettle and bog myrtle.
18 Oct 2013 (McGargle)
Comfotable early evening visit. Hope the more adventurous beer policy continues.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Magic Rock - Curious3.90GoodServed in top condition this seemed a little lacking in focus. But then again I did order a second pint.

07 Oct 2013 (McGargle)
Mostly locals. Lots of chat.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Bristol Beer Factory - Acer3.80ExcellentNot a fan of Sorachi hops but this merits 4* for the skill in brewing and serve.
Blackjack - Aces High IPA5.50GoodOK but..... And the 'but' is why no defining character? Could be one of many 'NW' IPAs.
Belhaven - Caledonian Deuchars IPA3.80Not Tried

Broughton - Greenmantle3.90Not Tried
02 Oct 2013 (McGargle)
Stormy night so mostly locals. Surprisingly busy.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Buxton - Moor Top3.60ExcellentFlavours more rounded than on last visit. Better? Worse? Diferent.

28 Sep 2013 (McGargle)
Great beers but wet feet. Overflowing urinal solved by placing a small bucket below which promptly overflowed.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Buxton - Moor Top3.60ExcellentTop quality ultra-pale ale. Fruity and very bitter. Almost 5*.
Bristol Beer Factory - Sunrise4.40GoodA darker gold. Earthy and bitter.
Cromarty - Happy Chappy4.10GoodAgainst the sharp focus of the BBF and Buxton beers this seemed a bit muddled. Normally a 4* beer I wonder if that's because we're usually starved of top comparisons and tend to over-rate?

13 Sep 2013 (Ray)
Busy. Willing staff.
BeerABVScoreNotes
six°north - Beyond the Pale (keg)4.20GoodDry, bitter and refreshing.
Cromarty - Atlantic Drift3.50AcceptableMuch less hoppy and focussed than the keg version. Aggressive, almost metallic, finish.
six°north - Beyond the Pale (keg)4.20PoorFrom a new keg this was muddled. Too smooth and balanced. No bitter dryness. No real hop presence either.

Busy early evening.
BeerABVScoreNotes
six°north - Hop Classic (keg)6.60GoodDarker, cloudier and less well defined than earlier samples.
Alechemy - Citra Burst5.40GoodDark golden ale somehow missing the sharp freshness of citra hops. Were they masked by the forward malt?
