A busy evening for a "meet the brewer" from the Kernel Brewery. Four Kernel beers on hand pump with another 10 or so on keg. I tried both and found the keg ones to be too cold from a flash cooler and a little gassy. I forgot the two other beers on hand pump.
Magic Rock - Curious | 3.90 | | Citrussy and refreshing. |
Kernel (The Kernel) - Kernel & Brew Wharf Collaboration | 4.50 | | Golden in colour, a combination of several hops, some of which I had never heard of. |
Kernel (The Kernel) - Nelson Sauvin Pale | 5.10 | | Another golden beer with a citrussy flavour. |
Kernel (The Kernel) - Citra and Nelson Sauvin | 7.10 | | Golden and citrussy. |
Kernel (The Kernel) - Export Stout | 7.80 | | Not quite what it said on the tin for my palate. Roasted coffee flavours but I didn't find the hops coming through like I would expect in a stout. Not a bad beer though. |
Magic Rock - High Wire | 5.50 | Not Tried
23 Jul 2011 (Martin the Mildman)
Saltaire - Summer | 4.20 | | Pale and bitter beer, but not particularly hoppy. Dryish, butter finish. My score 14/20. |

Busy on a Thursday evening.
Magic Rock - Rapture | 4.60 | | First tasting of this new brewery and what a corker. Red in colour with a very hoppy character with lots of citrus and gooseberry notes, suggesting Nelson Sauvin hops amongst others. Good malt base for all this hop action. My score 17/20. |
Twickenham (also uses sub-brand Old Hands) - Hornet | 4.40 | | Very pale and hoppy bitter with good hop and malt balance. The finish is fairly dry. My score 16/20. |
Mallinsons - Fools to Kings | 4.00 | | Pale ale with plenty of hops and good malt balance. The finish is dry and hoppy. My score 15/20. |

Just a few discerning drinkers in on a Saturday lunchtime.
Kent - Cobnut | 4.10 | | A red coloured nutty beer that manages to avoid falling into the crystal malt trap. Good nutty and malty flavours balanced by subtle hop notes. My score 16/20. |
Northern (see also Blakemere) - Jewel | 4.60 | | Strong golden bitter with good hop bitterness. The finish is fruity and hoppy. My score 15/20. |
Naylor's - AVB (Aire Valley Bitter) | 3.80 | | Well balanced amber bitter with a dryish, hoppy finish. My score 15/20. |
02 Apr 2011 (Martin the Mildman)
Quiet on a Saturday lunchtime, but with a few tables reserved for later on.
Ilkley - Lotus IPA (was 5.6%) | 5.50 | | Golden in colour, bitter with good citrus hop character. Full bodied flavour leading to a citrus hop finish. My score 15/20. |
De Molen & Revelation Cat - Milk Mild | 3.50 | | A rare departure for me, keg and probably the most expensive mild I have ever purchased. However I was intrigued. It was very toasty in character, dark brown and quite sweet. Not very milky, being rather thin in the mouth. My score 15/20. |
26 Feb 2011 (Martin the Mildman)
Quiet soon after opening on a Saturday lunchtime, but a steady stream of both drinkers and diners thereafter.
Kent - Zingiber | 4.10 | | Not normally a fan of beers with Ginger added but this was excellent, very sweet with just a faint tang of ginger and good hop and malt character to support it. Still brewed at Larkins. My score 16/20. |
Summer Wine (SWB) - Elbow Golden Ale | 3.80 | | A Yorkshire version of Hophead, very pale with a huge dose of Cascade hops to give a sharp, dry citrus hop flavour. Little malt character to give balance. My score 14/20. |
Summer Wine (SWB) - Heretic Black IPA | 7.20 | | Black, strong and hoppy. Hops dominate over malt flavours and the finish is very dry. My score 14/20. |

I walked in at 4pm on a Wednesday afternoon, and to my surprise the pub was empty, apparently they had had no customers in the previous hour. I was spoilt for choice for beers and had a couple of pints before moving on to a lecture at the LSE. Unusual draught (keg) ales included Odell 5 Barrel Pale Ale, Sierra Nevada Big Foot, and Great Divide Yeti Imperial Stout. The bottled beer refrigerators were full of some very interesting beers. Thankfully customers soon started to drift in.
Ilkley - Best | 4.00 | | Copper/brown coloured Yorkshire bitter ale. |
Dancing Duck - 22 | 4.30 | | Malty Best Bitter, rich and flavoursome. |
Whim - Hartington Bitter | 4.00 | Not Tried
Brunswick - Second Brew (aka The Usual) | 4.20 | Not Tried
Derby - Business as Usual | 4.40 | Not Tried
Dark Star - M&M Special Porter | 6.50 | Not Tried

Brilliant pub just got better with even more fridges for the bottled beer selection including some that are unique to this pub. The cask range continues to be interesting and of excellent quality.
Crouch Vale - Pioneer | 4.20 | | Really good beer. I loved the body, the hops everything about it and it had exceptional drinkability. |
Whim - Arbor Light | 3.60 | | Good light session beer |
Dark Star - M&M Special Porter | 6.50 | | Very intense flavours and an excellent finish, but a slightly odd flavour in the middle. |
Dark Star - Hophead was 3.8% (some has also been brewed by Fuller's) | 3.40 | Not Tried
30 Dec 2010 (Martin the Mildman)
Very busy late on a Thursday afternoon.
BrewDog - There Is No Santa (Cask) | 4.70 | | A dark brown beer with excellent citrus hop character and a hint of spice. The malt flavours are of toffee and dark chocolate. Fairly dry finish. My score 16/20. |

Dark Star meet the brewer event. Brilliant as always with all of the handpumps dispensing Dark Star beer. The landlord has dropped the prices of the bottle range as well, making this place even more attractive. The Mikkeller Black (17%ABV) was fantastic value at £9 a bottle.
Dark Star - American Pale Ale (some has also been brewed by Fuller's) | 4.70 | | Great mix of Cascades and Centennial hops. Just so drinkable as to be untrure. |
Dark Star - Tripel | 8.50 | | As good as I remember it. The interest of the yeast with this walloping big hit of hop. |
Dark Star - Simcoe IPA | 6.50 | | Simcoe hop flavours were outstanding. |
Dark Star - Porter | 5.50 | | Perfectly drinkable but not quite as good as the others. |
Dark Star - Green Hop IPA | 6.50 | | The Simcoe IPA as a base with Green Hops as well. I found this a bit more syrupy in the mouth and the Target hops made it very bitter on the finish. |
Dark Star - Hophead was 3.8% (some has also been brewed by Fuller's) | 3.40 | Not Tried
Dark Star - Critical Mass | 7.80 | Not Tried | I had a sip of someone elses and it is very oily and liquorice and just not my thing. |
Dark Star - Imperial Stout | 10.50 | Not Tried
Dark Star - Hylder Blonde | 4.20 | Not Tried
Dark Star - Smoked Porter | 5.40 | Not Tried
