Disappointing beer selection. Seems like Aberdeenshire landlords have an aversion to light, hoppy (summery) beers.
Belhaven - Caledonian Deuchars IPA | 3.80 | Not Tried
Timothy Taylor - Landlord | 4.30 | Not Tried
Inveralmond - Dunottar | 4.20 | Not Tried
Angus Ales - Birdie 3 | 4.10 | Not Tried
Strathaven - Summer Glow | 3.90 | Not Tried
29 Jul 2012 (McGargle)
Rain and showers. Quiet really.
Stewart - Solas | 5.00 | | Not a fan of Stewart's house style which always seems to be thin and lacking Solas came as a pleasant surprise. It's their take on an IPA/red ale. Surprisingly robust and full bodied it could take the pronounced hops easily. More care in hop selection and use would have given this an 'excellent' rating. |
Belhaven - Black Scottish Stout | 4.20 | Not Tried
Caledonian - Double Czech | 4.50 | Not Tried
02 Jul 2012 (McGargle)
Quiet - mostly locals in for a chat.
Three Castles - Castle Wheat | 4.50 | | Lacking in spice, body or anything really. Again slightly astringent. |
Black Wolf (formerly Traditional Scottish Ales (TSA)) - Knops IPA | 5.00 | | Clear golden ale, thin white head, vegetable aroma, malty, no body, bitter with a bit of astringency in the finish |
Belhaven - Caledonian Deuchars IPA | 3.80 | Not Tried
Houston - Warlock Stout | 4.70 | Not Tried
Inveralmond - Dunottar | 4.20 | Not Tried
Houston - Slainte | 4.10 | Not Tried
16 Mar 2012 (McGargle)
Very busy early evening but then it is Friday.
Stewart - Pentland IPA | 4.10 | | This is what I wrote July 2010: 'Just about acceptable. Thin in the mouth with only the merest hint of hops.' Still the same. |
Timothy Taylor - Landlord | 4.30 | | End of cask. Didn't pull easily, tired and yeasty. |
Kelburn - Goldihops | 3.80 | Not Tried
Strathaven - Lines Out | 4.00 | Not Tried
24 Dec 2011 (Ray)
Pleasantly busy early evening. Fast friendly service.
Fyne - West Highland Black IPA | 5.30 | | Jet black with a long lasting beige head. This smelled fruity and inviting. Plenty of hops with interesting sharpness from the malt. Lingering dry finish. |
Belhaven - Caledonian Deuchars IPA | 3.80 | Not Tried
Timothy Taylor - Landlord | 4.30 | Not Tried
Fyne - Holly Daze | 5.00 | Not Tried
Inveralmond - Dunottar | 4.20 | Not Tried
Stewart - Three Wise Men | 4.50 | Not Tried
20 Nov 2011 (Ray)
Mostly regulars enjoying the football. No commensurate excitement on the beer front. Sad to see how the bottles have dropped from around 100 to 5.
Burnside - Wild Rhino | 4.50 | | Initially good in the mouth. Some spice and fruit and good malt. But something in the short finish wasn't quite right. Maybe a touch astringent or soapy or phenolic - couldn't quite catch it. |
Belhaven - Caledonian Deuchars IPA | 3.80 | Not Tried
Timothy Taylor - Landlord | 4.30 | Not Tried
Greene King - Abbot | 5.00 | Not Tried | Maybe try to get something from Tempest, Tryst, Harviestoun etc but why should a POTY bother with this as guest?? |
Inveralmond - Dunottar | 4.20 | Not Tried
Caledonian - Autumn Red | 4.40 | Not Tried | Scored at 19 out of 100 by RateBeer so not an item to get excited about. |
28 Oct 2011 (McGargle)
Busy and friendly as usual.
Orkney (Sinclair) - Wayfarer IPA (Atlas range) | 4.40 | | Much drier than previous examples. |
Fyne - West Highland Black IPA | 5.30 | | Really been looking forward to trying this but the first acetic whiff (carried through to the flavour) indicated a beer on or past the turn. Great shame. |
Arran (formerly Isle of Arran) - Red Squirrel | 3.90 | Not Tried
19 Oct 2011 (McGargle)
In with a group of friends. Disappointing to report that we all felt the ales were served too cold.
Timothy Taylor - Landlord | 4.30 | | Tired and a little soapy. 3* - just. |
Orkney (Sinclair) - Red MacGregor | 4.00 | | When warmed. |
Cairngorm - Wildcat | 5.10 | Not Tried
Houston - Mars Odyssey | 4.20 | Not Tried
06 Oct 2011 (McGargle)
Comfortably quiet.
Deeside - Bydand | 4.00 | | Described as exceptionally fruity and so it was. A golden ale with tropical summer fruits in abundance but needed more from the malts. Short finish |
Orkney (Sinclair) - Northern Light (superseded by separate 4% entry) | 3.80 | Not Tried
25 Sep 2011 (Ray)
Harviestoun - Fringe Benefit | 3.70 | | bit warm |
Burnside - Wild Rhino | 4.50
Orkney (Sinclair) - Northern Light (superseded by separate 4% entry) | 3.80 | Not Tried
