Great atmosphere. Stonehaven Folk Festival saw performers along the harbour-side and in the pubs. Feeling generous with the scores. On another day they could all have been 2*.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Timothy Taylor - Landlord4.30AcceptableStrangely muted.
Kelburn - Dark Moor4.50AcceptableDark drab brown in the glass and in the mouth. Hints of chocolate but not much else happening.
Stewart - Festival Ale3.90AcceptableDon't know why Stewart produce specials. They taste just the same as their standard range. Not a lot of hops, not much from the malt just a copper colour in the glass.
24 Jun 2011 (Ray)
Lovely evening. Microlights overhead and sea cadets on the water. Perfect. Earlier had called in at The Liquor Store in Stonehaven's Market Place to pick up bottles from Kernel, Mallinson's and Rogue.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Fyne - Jarl3.80ExcellentFirst pint of 3 in the round smelt slightly eggy but the others were spot on. Served cool and refreshing. Tight white head, straw body. Citrus burst on the nose followed through a clean bitter, grapefruity taste with satisfying finish. All complemented by a solid malt base.
Belhaven - IPA3.80AcceptableNot, as suspected, a clone of GK IPA this is a marginally better beer. Lighter in colour with some floral hints on nose and body it still seemed thin and most certainly not an IPA in style or execution.

Beautiful evening; busy pub.
BeerABVScoreNotes

Busy. Pleasant atmosphere ruined by drunken bums on the harbour wall. To their credit The Marine staff did try and sort things out.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Burnside - M-Pire5.20ExcellentTraditional, well brewed strong bitter.
Houston - Crystal5.00Not Tried
14 May 2011 (Ray)
Busy - mostly people enjoying a beer and a natter.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Cairngorm - Wildcat5.10GoodStrong bitter. Dark amber with beige head. Slightly sweet and spicy. Good bitter finish.
Burnside - Black Katz3.60PoorA rather thin stout. Deep red almost black. Roasty aromas with a flash of chocolate on the taste then a dominating, overly aggressive bitterness (not entirely from the hops) carried to a long astringent finish.

Really busy but good, quick service.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Swannay (formerly Highland) - Orkney Best3.60AcceptableInitial floral hints soon gave way to a slightly soapy and astringent taste.
Cairngorm - Black Gold4.40PoorFirst impressions on the nose and mouth were of unreconstructed chocolate but these soon subsided to reveal the sourness of a beer on the turn.
Kelburn - Goldihops3.80Not Tried

Convivial. Lots of visitors enjoying Stonehaven.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Fyne - Jarl3.80ExcellentEnjoyable session beer. Not quite as forward as two days ago. Mellowed a little and lost a bit.

Good mid-week crowd.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Fyne - Jarl3.80ExceptionalExtraordinary! Very pale with tight white head. Bursting with citrus aromas which explode in the mouth - mostly grapefruit but orange and peach also present. Good malt body and long bittering finish. Served in excellent condition.
Timothy Taylor - Landlord4.30GoodInteresting to see how beer evolves. Gone are the biscuit hints replaced by more floral flavours. Slightly more assertive mouth feel.
10 Apr 2011 (Ray)
Beautiful evening to enjoy a beer on the harbour side.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Timothy Taylor - Landlord4.30ExcellentAt its best this is an excellent traditional bitter. Good malt body hints of biscuit and enough bitterness to make it moreish.
