They are experimenting with more guest ales again which is really good news. Sat at the bar and chatted about beer listening to The Cure.
Ramsgate Brewery (Gadds') - DogBolter Dark Porter | 5.60 | | I haven't had this in a bit, but this was as good as ever. Lovely mix of malts and then this great soft dark fruit flavour leading to a dryish malt finish. Excellent |
Cottage - Broadgauge | 3.90 | | Copper colour with thick beige head. Good fruity biter on aroma, bit of dusty malt later on in mouth. It’s ok. Some hop on end. OK |
Sharp's - Honey Spice | 4.20 | | Gold beer with lasting cream head. Perfumed spice aroma. Some sweetness but then this really perfumed lavender kicks in and is really not very pleasant. Pretty poor. Good condition though. |
Hopdaemon - Skrimshander IPA | 4.50 | Not Tried

It was very quiet when I got in, but a couple more parties came in whilst I was there, I guess it was a Tuesday at the end of the month. Ben Folds Five were on the stereo and I had a chat with the guy behind the bar about Dover beer festival. I sat, had a couple of relaxing pints and read Channel Draught, the local Camra rag.
Ramsgate Brewery (Gadds') - No. 5 | 4.40 | | In perfect condition, lovely best bitter, I could drink this all day. |
Ramsgate Brewery (Gadds') - DogBolter Dark Porter | 5.60 | | Again in perfect nick, great dark malts, lovely rich dark fruits, slipped down nicely. |
Wadworth - Henry's Original IPA | 3.60 | Not Tried
Ringwood - Old Thumper (now superseded by 5.1% version - separate entry) | 5.60 | Not Tried

I had Brian from the site on the bus back from France and we started chatting about beer, which made me thirsty, so I had to come to nearest best pub to work. Not very busy, but everyone was very friendly and said goodbye as they left. Chatted with the barman who said that there was a petition going to get the regular beer line up back with Skrimshander and Old Thumper, which I think is a shame as I would like to see more guests at the local CAMRA pub of the year. With 5 handpumps you can have 3 regulars of differing strengths and then 2 guests to open up more flavours to people. Disappointed to see people wanting to go back to what they know instead of lookking at a broader perspective. Good beer though. Great quality and trusty in not a great beer town.
Ramsgate Brewery (Gadds') - DogBolter Dark Porter | 5.60 | | Rounded dark fruits, bitter, sweet, malty, hoppy, Eddie's best beer. I mean it's just damn good. Drinkable, yet 5.6%. Not many pubs run with two 5% plus beers, but this one does. |
Ramsgate Brewery (Gadds') - No. 5 | 4.40 | | My favourite Gadd's beer. If I had to buy say 16 pints of just one of Eddie's beers it would be this one. Love the balance of sweet chestnut malts and the slightly peppery hop. Everything in a best bitter that Shepherd Neame Kent's Best isn't |
Hopdaemon - Dominator | 5.10 | | OK let's get some things sorted out. The first run of this beer was good, but lacked the hop impact that previous vintages had expressed. And Andrew will back me up on this, this year's was good, and we really wanted to rate it well, but it just lacked the hoppiness. Well this had the requisite hops, but still wasn't quite right. But that was something to do with my palate on the day I think as the bottle of Fullers Winter Ale on the train on the way home, bought from Sainsbury's had the the same taint. I blame the couscous royale I had for lunch. Still, a fantastic beer and if you see it, have it. |

Yet another puncture, which meant I missed my train, so I had 30 minutes to kill and couldn't think of a better place in Folkestone that I would rather go for a pint than here. Some after work people in at the bar, but pretty quiet really, I suppose it is January. Read the Marsh Mash whilst downing my pint.
Hopdaemon - Dominator | 5.10 | | Still very good, but just not quite there yet. Very full in the mouth, slightly grainy, but overall, I really do like this beer to session in the winter. |
Hopdaemon - Incubus | 4.00 | Not Tried

Monday lunchtime and a bit of buzz as Folkestone was very busy and I decided to take a half day from work. Good line up of beers.
Hopdaemon - Dominator | 5.10 | | Interested to have this again after the Old Brewery Tavern in Canterbury, where is was good but not as good as I had remembered from previous years. This however, was a slightly different pint. More syrupy fruit, but again, just not the hop I remember, if it had that biting grapefruit edge it did 2 years ago at Dover BF I would be very happy. Still a very full in the mouth, fruity, malty extra strong bitter, and still enormously creamy and drinkable. But just not as good as I remember. |

Came here to meet up with Martin before The Stranglers and ran into some work colleagues just leaving.
Ramsgate Brewery (Gadds') - No. 5 | 4.40 | | It took a few pulls to get any liquid out of the pump so I guessed it had just got a new barrel and he was just pulling it through. Certainly the first pour didn't look very beery. But the barman didn't pour it away, he served it to me. It looked alright, but I did challenge him, he said that there is sometimes a back log of air that needs pumping out. Anyway it tasted vaguely of chemicals. Shame as this is a good beer, it just needed serving a bit better. |

Just stopped in for one and a gander at the Independent.
Westerham - Summer Perle | 3.80 | | I love this beer. |
14 Oct 2008 (Ian)
It was a Tuesday night. Not sure why I came here. I just thought that maybe having a drink would make me feel better. My brain had virtually seized up at work and I needed a break. So I bought The Times and came to my Camra Branch POTY to relax
Westerham - Summer Perle | 3.80 | | Tasted exactly how I expected, good hops, good mouthfeel and just so tasty and refreshing. |
Ramsgate Brewery (Gadds') - No. 5 | 4.40 | | Having seen Andrew's post on this beer recently, I decided to try it again. Tasty malty bitter. |
Ramsgate Brewery (Gadds') - DogBolter Dark Porter | 5.60 | | Just a little flat in condition, but still extremely tasty. Good dark fruit |
Ringwood - Old Thumper (now superseded by 5.1% version - separate entry) | 5.60 | Not Tried
Hopdaemon - Skrimshander IPA | 4.50 | Not Tried
20 Sep 2008 (Ian)
I was at work at the weekend, so I popped in here for a drink before I went home. Not very busy to be honest and only 2 beers on.
Ramsgate Brewery (Gadds') - DogBolter Dark Porter | 5.60 | | One of the best beers brewed in the county. |
Ramsgate Brewery (Gadds') - No. 5 | 4.40 | | Very drinkable bitter. The pint disappeared in about 10 mins. |
