Oakham Helter Skelter on, not busy upstairs, book on economics and I was happy for an hour and a half.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Oakham - Helter Skelter5.00ExcellentJust so in my drinking zone. Blond, hoppy and in great condition. Touch of diacetyl here boosts the malts to balance the hops. Not uber hoppy by my standards, but certainly I can still taste the bitterness 30 mins later.

Official start of the festival and I really didn't want to miss the Stone beer brewed at Sheps.... and what do you know? It was on.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Shepherd Neame - Stone Brewing California Double IPA7.00ExceptionalOK, so I was looking forward to this beer almost more than any other. Even the thought of it brought me out in a big smile. A 7% DIPA brewed in Kent at Sheps, a brewery I sometimes much deride. Stone Ruination is one of my favourite beers too so anything like that would be great. Then I got 2 pints of it and took it upstairs to the gallery of this converted former church (fitting really). The aroma is simply outstanding. The dry hopped hop, the simcoes screaming through and then this toffee malt. The beauty of cask conditioned beer. Earlier it was great on nose, sweetish toffee caramel in mouth, a touch thin even and fantastic hoppy finish. But just something missing. Now the condition is perfect. Still an aroma of leafy dry hops. Like rubbing a fresh hop flower between your fingers. Some hop resin. But the mouthfeel has got better, creamier, fuller. Still distinct caramel, but wider, fuller mouthfeel to when I first had it. Finish has lasting, oh man, lasting green, simcoe, dry hop flavour. Didn’t know it was going to be on, no idea, just the discovery, the worry about distribution, how much was made, would only specific Spoons get it. I went home after the first 4 pints and then did an 80 minute round trip to come back and have it again just in case I didn’t have it again or in this good a condition. I’ve never had a beer brewed in the UK like it. At no time did the alcohol come through until the next morning when I felt like death. Not as cold or as hard as some US IPAs I’ve had. One of the best UK brewed beers I’ve had.

The day before their festival started so I thought I would check it out just in case they had some good beers on, and they did.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Marston's - Sunbright3.80AcceptableGold with lasting thin ivory head. Well, it’s a golden ale, some biscuit, some hop sting on end. Earthy aroma. Decent condition. Really very earthy aroma and earthy on finish with pale malt in the middle.
Robinsons - Top Tipple3.90AcceptableGold with lasting beige head. Biscuity bitter. Faint malt/hop aroma. Decent session bitter with just enough hop on the end to make it suppable. Good condition. Nice mouthfeel, some yeast character. Hops on finish are bitter and tasty.

Early evening on Wednesday, not too busy.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Nethergate (was Nethergate Growler for a while then name reverted) - Old Growler5.00ExcellentI can't believe that I started by not liking this beer. Now a firm favourite in a Spoons.

I fair number of people excited by the beer festival that had just started.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Moorhouse's - Black Cat Mild3.40GoodDefinitely fresh, definitely chocolatey, definitely mild. Easy to drink, rather nice.
Banks's - Salute Ale4.10GoodComing to the end of the barrel apparently. Reddy brown with beige head. Relatively fruity aroma, some brown sugar flavour in mouth. Fruity, sweetish bitter. Faint tingly hop on end. Malts are nice and so is the fullish mouthfeel.
Hook Norton - Hooky Gold4.10GoodWell it's gold, thin white bubbly head. It's a faintly malty, faintly hoppy beer. Nice enough. Citrus orangey fruity flavours. Drinkable and quite likeable. Doesn't exactly excite, but definitely drinkable.

Very late Friday afternoon and not overly busy. Not many beers on either.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Brewster's - Hop a Doodle Doo4.30ExcellentCopper colour with lasting off white head. Aroma of strong grapefruit and hop. Very hoppy for a UK bitter, more like an APA, with glittering floral hop on finish. Some American hops I guess from the amount of grapefruit. Malts show moderate juiciness with just enough balance to carry the hops. Man, what an APA at the end of a long week. Lovely and tingly on the finish. Good grapefruit. Barman? Another one of these please.

Not hugely busy even though it was their cheaper beer night. Came after work and sat in one of the comfy chairs in the corner snugs

Butcombe - Gold4.40GoodSo good I had 2 pints in 20 minutes. Great hop and full malt with a lasting hop finish.

As The Chambers festival was nearly over, I came down here and almost fainted when I saw Oakham Bishop's Farewell on.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Oakham - Bishops Farewell4.60GoodLike the JHB at the moment the eggy yeast does this no favours. The hops too were a bit soapy, but still I love those citrus hops.

Came here on a Friday late afternoon after work and sat in the comfy chairs in one of the corner snugs. Reasonably busy with customers.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Hanlons (formerly O'Hanlon's) - Original Port Stout4.80ExcellentAfter 4 days without a drink, what a pint to break my fast. Aroma of choc/coffee and rich dark fruits. One of my favourite UK stouts. Good roasted flavours. Some sourness on finish. Good beer.

I didn't fancy the cask conditioned beer so I had a bottle of the Thomas Hardy Ale now brewed by O'Hanlons, which the pub had left over from their beer festival in October last year. The last few bottles are still for sale.
